GAME OF THRONES Star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Acknowledges Fan Disappointment With Jaime Lannister's Demise

Despite starting out as a despicable villain, Jaime Lannister became a fan-favorite part of Game of Thrones as time passed, but even the actor who played him seems disappointed by his character's end!

The final season of Game of Thrones disappointed many fans, with the series finale considered particularly underwhelming. Many characters recieved fitting send-offs over the course of that last run of episodes, but Jaime Lannister was not among them. Instead, he was buried beneath King's Landing alongside Cersei following Daenerys's attack on the capital.

It wasn't an overly dramatic end for the villain turned anti-hero, and when Variety asked if he was surprised viewers wanted a more noble death for Jaime, actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau joked that he almost donated to that petition to reshoot the finale, but only because he found it funny.

However, he does seem to understand why a lot of people wanted a different ending.

"I didn’t follow it at all. Obviously, I heard about it. I was aware of the petition for a new ending, which I thought was hilarious. I almost wanted to donate to that petition. HBO saying, 'You’re right, so many people want it, we’re going to do it,'" the actor explains. "I think everyone had their own opinion. I find the world of fandom really interesting."

"Everyone wanted something specific and different from what they got. It’s a combination of — you imagine an ending; but also, I think if you’re a hardcore fan, it was really upsetting that it ended. You lived with this for eight seasons. There is still a massive community dedicated to 'Game of Thrones.' I think there was a real fear that was going to go away. It had to end."

Coster-Waldau is clearly well aware that some fans weren't happy with the way Jaime's story ended, but seemingly feels that some of that disappointment revolved around the show itself coming to an end. There is some truth to that, and viewers definitely had high expectations, but most seem to agree David Benioff and DB Weiss dropped the ball in a significant way.

@dracula - Some of the most amazing TV i have ever seen. HOWEVER, with how it ended, i will NEVER tell someone who hasn't watched it to watch it. The most disappointing ending ever. Waste of 8 years. I still get mad just thinking about it.

@dracula - Watch it up through the second episode of the last season, and then stop and just assume everyone died.

Or watch through just season 5 if you want to quit at the high point.

@ChangAlang - If only the writer didn't take so long
Didn't get into Game of Thrones, but love The Outlander, those books are suppose to have 10 in total and they have 2 books to go. Hopefully the writter can finish before they catch up.

@dracula - he only edits the story. It's a collab with other writers.

@dracula - They abandoned the source material well before they ran out of it, though. AFFC/ADWD have about two seasons worth of content, most of which was completely ignored.

I mean, ofc the actors will dance around saying it was crap. It was crap. And it hurts people so much cuz it was really really good for the first few years. Now it basically has no rewatch value.

It worked. Even if we wanted him to live. But he got why he wanted. His name and his deeds were put down in the great book of knights.

Which (when they introduced that book and Geoffrey mocking Jamie about no deeds) you just knew they would bring it back.

Jamie kills his king and saves the kingdom and gets branded a king slayer and a man of no honor.

Jamie protects his ruthless queen, but he fulfilled his duty to protect his queen to the end.

Jamie probably would of earned Ned Starks respect with his final act.

@AzulaCipher - what did ned say in season 1?

“You served your king. When serving him was easy.”

Those knights of Westeros. Always bound by their oaths and honor.

Jamie died finally becoming the knight Ned was telling him about in season 1.

@IronGenesis - This is silly.

Ned would never respect Jaime's death. He was there because of his incestous relationship with her obviously. And Jaimes killing the king was never represented as an evil act, just honourless to the populace.

@SaoriseRonan - I’m sorry but he absolutely goes down in history as a guy that was honorable to his queen which is exactly what all the other nights wanted him to be that’s just a great contradiction that George R Martin writes about Which is at essence what Game of Thrones is the contradiction to the classic night stories

@IronGenesis - No he won't. The lannisters will be seen as incestous kingslayers. His loyalty has been flushed even further down the toilet.

These artist types would never admit they made a mistake, not as big as this one anyway. Of course he's going to play coy about it. I can't imagine any of them think the ending was good. It wasn't because we all had preconceived ideas on how the ending should be, it was because the ending was trash. If it was different from what we all wanted, BUT was really good we'd say that. Sadly, they [frick]ed up and rushed the stories in the last two seasons and a lot of shit didn't make any sense at all.

Gotta love Nikolaj. Seems like a genuinely decent man. Just watched The Silencing recently, a really good movie, and he's terrific in it.
