Yesterday we received official confirmation that HBO had renewed Game Of Thrones for a third season, but aside from that no other details were released. Now the author of the novels on which the show is based, George R.R Martin, has taken to his blog to provide fans with a bit more info..

Yes, it's official.

HBO has ordered a third season of GAME OF THRONES.

Like the first two seasons, it will be ten episodes long. This one will cover (roughly) the first half or thereabouts of A STORM OF SWORDS, the third novel in the series.

I'll be writing the seventh episode, with the working title "Autumn Storms."

So ten episodes yet again, and as many fans predicted it seems the third book will indeed be split into two seasons. Kind of! You see we also have some quotes from the show's producers (via Screenrant), D. B. Weiss and David Benioff, who reveal that they are not necessarily taking a "one book per season" approach, and we may well see things from the later books in the series earlier than expected..

Well… “A Storm of Swords” is too long to fit in a single season. And as readers know, “A Feast for Crows” and “A Dance with Dragons” takes place during roughly the same time frame, so we’ll have to fold those together. The plan, if we’re lucky enough to be given the opportunity to see it through, is to use as many seasons as we need to tell the story as a whole, to do justice to George’s entire opus.

We’re not looking at our series as a book-by-book adaptation so much as an adaptation of George’s entire saga. In other words, in our minds season two is not “A Clash of Kings.” It is the second season of our adaptation of “A Song of Ice and Fire.”

Sounds incredible! Though i really wish they wouldn´t change names. I understand it may be a bit confusing for the non readers but the info is all there, if they just pay enough attention. But its a minor strife considering the series as a whole is masterfully executed!

Seeing the Red Wedding on screen will both suck and be awesome at the same time.

The biggest challenge for Dan and David at this point in my opinion is weaving the River Run/Tully story into this. They really need to introduce the Reed siblings as well for Bran's benefit. Edmure Tully's wedding is a big part of the third book and to my knowledge I don't think he is in season 2.

Love this show. And it makes total sense not to do a book by book adaptation, considering the cast gets so large that the author himself split them in half to properly care for each one with the last two books. A whole season without half the cast would seem ridiculous.

supposedly the only reason HBO didn't commit to a fourth season as well is due to varying contracts and commitments from different cast members. for example some may be signed on for 3 seasons, some for 4, some for 5, some for 2 etc. but if all goes well we will more than likely get a 4th as well next season

well, at least the author's got more time to finish his books by the time they reach season 5 or 6.

SWEET !!! can't wait, after what George RR Martin did to most of my favorite characters pissed me off. So this is what I think is going to happen now.

Atleast it keeps the story going, still love the books and show.
