HOUSE OF THE DRAGON Co-Creator Explains How Ser Criston Cole Escaped Execution - SPOILERS

How in seven hells did Ser Criston Cole get away with beating a man to death in plain view of his lover, The King, and pretty much everyone else in King's Landing? Co-creator Ryan Condon weighs in...

Ser Criston Cole is a very lucky man!

Initially introduced as an honourable warrior who pledged his sword to the young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, the character was taken in a much darker direction in the closing moments of last week's episode of House of the Dragon when he brutally beat Laenor Velaryon's lover Joffrey (not that Joffrey) to death for taunting him about his sexual relationship with Rhaenyra.

We then saw the shamed knight make his way outside and prepare to take his own life before being stopped by Queen Alicent Hightower, and he was still standing proudly by her side after the 10-year time-jump when we caught up with them in this past Sunday's instalment.

So, how in seven hells did Ser Criston escape execution, or at the very least imprisonment, after murdering someone in front of King Viserys and practically everyone else in King's Landing?

While speaking to EW, the show's co-creator Ryan Condon was asked that very question.

"There were mistakes made. It was a different time. Alicent saves his life. That's what that final scene is telling you. Alicent goes in there and saves his life and begs for his life and honor with the king and wins. And then he is absolutely, as we see in episode 6, 100 percent devoted to her."

Okay, assuming we buy this explanation, wouldn't Laenor - himself a formidable warrior - still seek vengeance? Sure, a decade has passed, but seeing your lover's face being obliterated is not something you get over very easily.

We might learn more about what happened over the past ten years in a future episode, but one thing is for sure, fans are very much hoping to see the now bitter and spiteful Ser Criston Cole get what's coming to him.

Fabien Frankel is playing this part so well. Came across as the honourable knight in shining armour at first but then turns out to be deeply rageful, hateful and kinda pathetic.

I can't get into this show.. it's just dull. None of it really makes any sense.

@toylled - maybe we can help you. What parts do you find difficult to understand?

@Vigor - I have one: Why ( after Rhaenyra and Laenor come to the understanding that they must produce heirs ), would they commit to spawning a pack of very obvious bastards? She is fully aware that upon her coronation, she would face challenges to her rule. In fact, her arraigned marriage was meant to solidify her claim, but she decides to have an “insulting” number of very non-Targaryen haired children. I feel like I missed something that would explain these glaringly stupid decisions.

@Dunejedi - you didn't miss anything. Ite simple. Rhaenyra is stupid and emotion driven.

That's the entire point

Never really thought much of it. All he had to say is that Joffrey made a threat against Princess Rhaenyra.

@thewanderer - Exactly. I always found the "But how did he get away with it?" complaints overblown. No one really saw how it started - they only know that the Kingsguard known for being incredibly dutiful to his honor and vows killed Joffrey and that Joffrey had drawn his dagger at some point. It's no hard task for Criston to say Joffrey insulted Rhaenyra's honor and drew his blade when confronted.

Joffrey's family isn't powerful enough to make a fuss, Corlys is happy to have him gone and Laenor will surely be under pressure from all sides to let it go or else it would be suspicious.

I've been fine with all the time skips so far, but it really feels we skipped an episode between episodes 5 and 6.

A better question is what skin cream is Cristan using? Hasn’t aged a day in 10 years.

The Princess Rhaenyra is brazen and relentless. A spider that stings and suck her prey dry. Spoiled [foo foo]! (Awkward Silence) That's beneath your grace I apologize.

Massive inceling simping bully.
