Acclaimed director Terry Gilliam gives a candid interview with G4 about being a founding member of Monty Python, his new film, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, his long-planned Don Quixote and how he almost made The Watchmen years before Zach Snyder (skip to 1:49, if that's all you're interested in, comic book movie fans).

Terry Gilliam on The Watchmen movie:

"I'm glad I didn't get a chance to f*ck it up!"

I agree a 100% with his opinion on the Watchmen, it was indeed both to short and at the same time far to long. It had the atmosphere right but the story felt rushed and undeveloped in parts and at the same time I found myself looking at my watch at several parts.

I can't wait to see Doctor Parnassus, I love terry's movies.

Thanks, guys! Yeah, the Watchmen bit was what interested me the most. He did have some praise for Snyder's film--the look and Rorschach--but basically said that it was too short and too long at the same time, which is kind of funny. What's also interesting is that he said he spoke to Alan Moore about it and didn't get cursed out for suggesting that it become a film, as Moore is want to do.

I think the fact that he actually went and spoke to Moore about it was the reason that he didn't get cursed out, that and the fact that Gilliam's movie was being discussed in the late 80's and Moore was a little more mellow back then.

I loved the Baron Munchausen movie when i was a kid. Freaking brilliant! And he'll make a damn good Don Quixote movie.

My complaints about Snyder's Watchmen are few and small, but it would have been interesting to see Gilliam's take on it given the tone and style of his other movies. I think it would have been cool.

I used to love Gilliam until his movies started sucking balls. His last 3 were awful..and yes, that includes Pernassus. The only good thing about it is Tom Waits. So, Im happy Snyder did Watchmen. Because in Gilliam's current form, it would have been a mess I think.

Agreed Ror

Gilliam has been slipping of late. Haven't seen Pernassus, but I'm sure I will in spite of how bad it may be. He's done enough great stuff in the past to fk a few up. But lets not get carried away.

I actually didn't mind tide land, personally I think it's his best work since Brazil it was surreal and disturbing. And I think he did the right thing in not doing the watchmen, he made the right choice he knew that he couldn't do it justice in one movie. I think I would have liked his serialized watchmen idea, it would have eliminated all of my qualms about the movie.

There are plenty of people that enjoyed it, just because you didn't like it doesn't mean it wasn't good. You have to really be a fan of Mitch Cullen's book to enjoy the movie. It's meant to be twisted and unsettling, and it does that well.
