The pilot episode for Damon Lindelof's upcoming
Watchmen series screened last night for an excited NYCC audience and based on these unbelievably positive first reactions, it sounds like HBO may have another megahit on their hands, just months after wrapping up
Game of Thrones historic eight-season run.
Academy Award-winner Regina King, who is headlining the massive ensemble cast, receives universal acclaim for her performance as Angela Abraham, with viewers calling her "
incredible" and "
extremely badass," amongst other superlatives.
On another note, it sounds like the upcoming series may ultimately turn out to be more of a nine-episode miniseries rather than something that spans multiple seasons. When asked by
Deadline about how many seasons he envisioned for the series, he answered:
"
I’m not being flippant when I say that the answer is one.
Does that mean that there isn’t going to be anymore Watchmen? Not necessarily. Does that mean that I will be working on subsequent seasons of Watchmen? I don’t know is the answer to that question. We designed these nine episodes to be as self-contained as the original 12 issues. We wanted to feel like there was a sense of completeness, to resolve the essential mystery at hand. Obviously, there is a potential promise for the further exploration of the world but like the seasons of Leftovers that I did as opposed to Lost, which was designed to have cliffhanger finales and a promise of future storytelling."
