Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will premiere its sixth season earlier than expected. Initially rumored to debut in July, the show will now return in May, coming shortly after the release of Avengers: Endgame. The news was revealed earlier today at the end of a Valentine's Day video, shared on the show's Twitter page, that featured various romantic moments from Season 5 involving the main cast.

Season 6 will find our Agents operating in a post-Phil Coulson environment, with half of the team under the supervision of Director Mack helping to deal with threats on Earth and the other half in deep space searching for cryo Fitz. However, our team will encounter a big surprise with the arrival of 'Not Phil Coulson,' and the mystery of why this foe looks like their old friend will be one of the big storylines of the season.

Thanks to an insider scoop from Michael Ausiello of TV Line, we now know that Season 6 will feature a time-jump and pick up "about a year after the team dropped a terminal Coulson off in Tahiti" to live out his final days at the end of Season 5.

Ausiello also stated that the sixth season could be subtitled "The Search for Fitz," driven by Jemma's mission to find her cryo-frozen man who has become lost in space, with Clark Gregg adding "Fitz is one elusive, sexy bastard!" Finally, Elizabeth Henstridge teased that this sixth season will be unlike anything we have seen before from the series, saying "this season is a departure from other stuff we've done."

Be sure to tune into new Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. this May.

@PBIRD - yeah he was great in that. Caestecker, imo, has given us the best acting on SHIELD.

I'm not really sure what to make of Agents of SHIELD anymore.

It may be end up being the first of Marvel TV's series in the MCU Age, (nearly) the most maligned, while also being the most connected to the movies, and ultimately the last one standing.

With Coulson featuring in Captain Marvel, his and Fury's classic SHIELD adventures being suddenly relevant, it makes sense to keep the show on the air a bit longer. But they also all-but wrote him out of the show. The series is off on its own tangent as far away from the movie material as possible. It's comicbooky as hell, but also completely off-book, and not highly rated enough to explain this long term commitment (unless it really is just to keep the Disney higher-ups happy that Marvel has a presence on network).

It's just the blackest of black sheep, ain't it?

It goes without saying that it's also pretty good television on its own terms, so I didn't say it.

But it's a mess of a thing, held together with moxy and pluck.

@Spock0Clock - maligned? Its critically acclaimed and the highest rated of the Marvel shows up to this point. What a minority of people say on the internet holds no weight. But yes, it could very well be the last of the "first 10 years" shows to be standing.

Also, pretty much the entirety of season 5 is indirectly a result of Thanos and his forces invading Wakanda.

Yes, the show could be kept around right now partially to ensure that there is a Marvel presence on the network. But it is also a huge hit for ABC, especially in overseas markets. Its good business to keep the show going...
