AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. Star Clark Gregg Says Don't Expect Agent Coulson To Reunite With THE AVENGERS...Yet

It's been six years since Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) died in The Avengers, and while he returned to life, his superhero teammates remain blissfully unaware. Gregg says that isn't changing any time soon.

As far as Earth's Mightiest Heroes are concerned, Agent Phil Coulson is dead, murdered at the hands of Loki in 2012's The Avengers. As we all know, however, the tenacious S.H.I.E.L.D. agent is very much alive, and has been a central player in Marvel's television spinoff, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (where his sudden resurrection was explained).

While the show is now entering its fifth season, The Avengers still remain unaware that Coulson is alive, and actor Clark Gregg has hinted that it's probably going to stay that way...at least for the time being. "It is an ever-present theme," Gregg told ComicBook in an interview. "It’s really touching to me how much the fans stay obsessed with the idea of when the Avengers are going to learn Coulson’s alive. It’s something that…I don’t know, I find that so touching! I think the Avengers have moved on, they’re busy."

Of course, comments such as these inevitably lead many to say (incorrectly) that Marvel's television programs aren't a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Gregg, however, believes that all the separate stories are taking place in the same world, and isn't averse to reuniting with the Avengers one day. “But also I think it's a great credit to the show and the characters and the actors who brought these characters to life and to our production team, to Mark Kolpack's visual effects and to the great writing of our writers, Jed [Whedon], Mo [Tancharoen] and Jeff [Bell], because I think there's a growing number of people who kind of feel like this feels like a part of that bigger world and they want to see the various worlds – whether it's the incredible Netflix world of New York, they just want at some point feel that this is one big story, which I still believe it is. And you know, when the time is right, who knows?”

Do you want to see Coulson reveal himself to The Avengers one day? Let us know in the comments! Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns for a fifth season tomorrow night on ABC.

Don't worry Gregg, at this point, i won't hold my breath.

For god sake, good chance we will have the fox universe too. Tv needs to have a better inclusion.

Also, really want captain america to meet the punisher.

@InfiniteCipher - God, me too. Cap/Punisher and Spider-man/Daredevil are the crossovers I want the most

@InfiniteCipher - Yep, I really want to see how the clean cut ex-soldier would react to meeting the at-large terrorist vigilante dressed in black... wait...

...you know... the contrast isn't as stark as it used to be, is it?

@Spock0Clock - I need more information before saying that.I think cap still believes in hope and things, but blames himself for the civil war.

Frank saw his whole family die and actually enjoys killing, but at heart, holds similer value.

So i think if they did meet, they would try and convince eachover they are different, when are they not.

Hell, i'm pretty sure punisher joined the army because of cap

@InfiniteCipher - If they do... (*sob*) k...k... you know... if Chris Evans isn't coming back after Avengers 3/4, I would love to see Bernthal brought in as part of a Captain America 4 movie, where different sides/interests try to take the mantle of Cap for themselves.

Not sure how to frame it exactly, but having Frank, possibly Sam, and maybe Nuke or a US Agent being pretenders until Bucky steps up to fulfill Steve's real legacy would be cool.

@Spock0Clock - Indeed. Also if evans is leaving they need to bring the defenders for avengers 4 definatly.

@InfiniteCipher-

Basically I agree with what you & Spock say. It seems that the MAJOR difference between Cap, Daredevil & Punisher is if/when they try to use the judicial system first vs shields or billy clubs or skipping it altogether & hiring the 'firm' of SMITH & WESSON but Frank still has respect for what 'Red' & Cap try, he just feels they'll be doing it long after THEY'RE dead too!

Perlmutter gets ousted and the TV division gets put under Feige's remit, we'd have an Avengers / TV crossover within a year.

Even as it is, we might still. But it's not just bad blood between the two of them, it's also that Feige doesn't trust Perlmutter to make quality entertainment. Feige has risen to be the new King of Hollywood by getting himself as far away from the penny-pinchers and the schmoozers that run so much of the industry as he could and focusing on workmanlike consistency.

If Louis D'Esposito oversaw Marvel TV from ~2012 (with or without Loeb running the day-to-day), we'd be in a vastly different place, and probably a much better one.

Feige doesn't trust Perlmutter (or people under his direct influence) to make quality entertainment.

I should say.

@Spock0Clock - I agree 100%. Pelmutter wanted Inhumans to be done FAST and CHEAPLY. That's two words that never should be uttered for a property like Inhumans. Ike wanted RDJ cut completely from CW and the budget to be scaled considerably.

Feige wants to make good movies. That's the reason why Phase is by far the most acclaimed MCU Phase and it's completely Ike-free.

That's a shame. I was hoping Infinity War would include him and some other SHIELD characters. I guess there's too much going on in that film already. But they could have included Ghost Rider.

People don't understand how things work right now. All the easter eggs in AOS, all the Coulson cameos in Phase 1 films were dictated by the CC that Ike assembled.

Feige wanted Coulson killed and stay dead in Avengers in order to solidify the team. Ike wanted a show that will be connected to the MCU and that will benefit from cross-synergy. So he pretty much negated Coulson's sacrifice and Feige's decision.

It was Feige NOT WHEDON who wanted Coulson killed in Avengers. Feige never cared about the shows ecause Ike was making decisions behind his back. He forced the Inhumans connection in AOS in order to set up a movie FEIGE NEVER WANTED TO MAKE.

Shame that to write off the inhumans and pretend they never happened you’d have to write off a major part of agents of shield . I think that’s one of the reasons it took so long for me to jump back on. It would be a kick in the ass to the people who have followed along for 5 seasons. Wonder how they fix that if they do wind up with X-men.
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 11/30/2017, 5:15 AM
@Supercat6376 - I think Agents and Inhumans will most likely get the Incredible Hulk treatment, should Feige want/be convinced to bring them into the movies or canonically embrace them in some way.

Vague agreement with broad plot points (there has been a deep cover faction of SHIELD after Winter Soldier and they've been dealing with Inhuman stuff, and the Inhuman Royal Family exists and visited Earth), but anything even slightly objectionable or unpopular gets fudged out of existence.

That does mean there's still hope for meaningful crossovers and for existing cast to stick around, but recasts wouldn't surprise me. Especially for Inhumans since they made so little a splash, (even though I'm actually quite happy with most of the actors in that, particularly Bolt/Medusa/Maximus).

Supercat6376 - 11/30/2017, 5:27 AM
@Spock0Clock - with Inhumans I just couldn’t past episode two. I’m a big black bolt fan and I liked Mount in Hell on Wheels so the way they treated that property really killed me. I bet they do fudge over a lot of the really reviled material, but it would’ve been easier had they held back on giving the inhumans their own show.
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 11/30/2017, 5:34 AM
@Supercat6376 - Mount is a great cast, but so much of Inhumans was just poorly conceived. The sign language? My god... Say goodbye to the mystique of a silent king.

Honestly, no offense to anyone who is deaf, mute, or just a signing enthusiast, but it's impossible to be stoic while also waving your hands around.

But that can all be fudged. Just... fudge everywhere. I've watched the first two and there are some moments with Mount that are great. He's very expressive in exactly the right way once they got him away from Medusa. (Which sucks to say, because those two should be better together, but... here we are...)

I believe he will turn up in Avengers 4. Perfect opportunity. Sooner or later, they have to address Coulson if they're going to give the original 6 a proper GOODBYE.

man its so sad that marvel has to deal with handicaps like not owning spiderman, x-men, fantastic four

and then they have to deal with perlmutter who runs marvel ent. and almost made feige quit

A lot of potential movies are squandered by the shows. Yes I like aos, Murdock, and castle, Jessica jones too, also Fisk and Kilgrave, occasionally Luke, but the Hand and Iron Fist which sucked were such a big part of the Defenders which also sucked, and other than Daisy, Inhumans is a bust. Ghost Rider was awesome tho. Ain't watched Runaways yet. If only it were all canceled and the best parts salvaged for the movies.
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 11/30/2017, 6:01 AM
@TheWalkingCuban - The best outcome may be if Disney gives a mandate to Marvel Entertainment prohibiting them from doing any work outside of their distribution network.

Yes, it could be chaotic for the Netflix stuff, but if they were able to transition it to Disney's streaming service, then it creates an incentive to really overperform that doesn't currently exist for them.

Star Trek Discovery showed what kind of production value these companies are willing to commit to a flagship to sell a new streaming service.

It would suck if the shows technically would have to be canceled and restarted under new names, but if the only meaningful difference between them was a significant upgrade in budget/production, I'd rather have season one of Charlie Cox in "The Man without Fear" than season 4 of Daredevil.

With the eminent restructuring of Disney's stance toward competitors and potentially a Fox merger on the way, Marvel has a lot of big fish to fry right now. There's likely to be some good things that unfortunately slip through the cracks.
