J. August Richards Is NOT Luke Cage In AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D; Is He A Brand New Character?

We already had some hints that Richards wasn't playing Cage, but now it seems he's not playing Rage either! Producer Jeffrey Bell spoke with IGN about the mysterious character, and it sounds like he might have been created just for the tv show..

Fans have many questions about ABC's Marvel series, Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Before the trailers hit the biggest one was "how did Coulson survive?", but now people seem to be a bit more curious about former Angel actor J. August Richard's appearance as the mysterious "superhero" formerly assumed to be Luke Cage. Yesterday we posted a clue that seemed to link his character to another Marvel tough guy named Rage, but now it seems both guesses were wrong. IGN caught up with the show's executive producer Jeffrey Bell, and asked him all about it.

IGN: And I’ve got to ask about J. August Richards…

Bell: Killed it! He’s so good. He’s so good, because we were looking for this character M-- I almost said his name. It’s not the one people are talking about.

IGN: He’s not! So I’m going to say Luke Cage, and you’re going to say...

Bell: I’m going to say that’s an interesting Marvel character, but no. But he came in and killed it. Honestly, we were looking for this part, and we just said, look, all our parts are open to all diversity. So the fact that we have a black dude who is awesome and it's J, was just because he was the best actor. It wasn’t like, “You know who…!”

IGN: Should we assume it’s someone familiar if you read Marvel comics?

Bell: You know, not necessarily. I mean, we’re going to draw from it, but Marvel has its thing, and we’re also going to be expanding forward, and this world is different since The Avengers. So I think there will be people showing up, some from the Marvel Universe and some not. But to commit to anything more would be telling.

So whoever he is, it appears his name begins with an "M" anyway -- and it also sounds like he'll be an original creation just for Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D and not an established Marvel Comics character. Bell goes on to say that Richards is a guest star, and although we can expect many others, not every character will have superpowers. Click the link below for the full interview.

Really not understanding why this even needed to be said. Anyone with common sense could tell that Marvel wouldn't be dumb enough to cast him as Luke Cage.

"Honestly, we were looking for this part, and we just said, look, all our parts are open to all diversity. So the fact that we have a black dude who is awesome and it's J, was just because he was the best actor."

So, speculation can go beyond black characters.

Proceed...

Could the hoodie be some kind of foreshadowing? Interesting...

I would DIE if he turned out to be Moon Knight! I need to see that character in live-action! I really hope it's not a brand new character. Marvel has so many characters to choose from that we all want to see. Creating a new one seems like a waste. Why not use what they already have and that already have a fanbase?

Anyone who thinks its Moon Knight is mentally challenged..since when can MK leap from a building unassisted by a grappling line & crush concrete with his feet on impact?
HE CAN'T! Use your heads.

It's NOT a black guy from comics..the guy plainly states that in interview.
Basically that actors initials are J.A.R. and that stands for: JUST ANOTHER REPLACEMENT.
I bet they save any real MAJOR superheroes for quick cameos..only get B-list or worse for show.

@earzmundo

The difference is that MAoS has a place in a larger established universe, whereas SMALLVILLE played fast and loose with its canon (the show not being tied to anything but a soft interpretation of the comics and movies) and HEROES had no connection to anything.

AGENTS OF SHIELD comes with a built-in expectation, and you can bet your a$$ that Whedon and co. will be working to make sure their show is not the MCU's weak link.

Oh no! This was what I was most afraid of. Please don't make up new characters or baddies of the week when Marvel comics has a whole slate of B to D level characters that can be used for this show.

If they just create non descript power guys and girls, this might as well be Hereos or Mutant X. What would be the point in this be Marvel Agents of SHIELD if you don't use Marvel characters. Ugh.

Now if he happens to be a black version of Moon Knight. Now that would be intriguing and likely piss off a lot of fanboys. Unfortunately he will likely be generic angry black guy with powers. Ugh, first misstep IMO.

I'm in the camp that says it's Marcus Fury. If it's a character created specifically for the show, then why keep his role a secret?

It has to be a character from the comics not a new one cause why was he afraid to say his name if he was a new character he would of said the name just like they release those other agents names. Since there know source on new character until it comes out.

Creating new characters for the bureaucrats is fine, but it would be a waste to create new characters with powers when there are decades worth of them from the comics who should get a shot at the mainstream.

He's Rage, wasn't it said that this show will cover over Class D and F Marvel characters and very minor villains and heroes? Maybe the answer lies along those lines.

2.Miles Morales ??
3.Patriot

Someone mentioned Miles Morales. Now I dont think he's playing that...

But it made me wonder how far Marvel/ABC could go with Miles Morales in a different suit and never mentioning the "s" word? With Sony owning Spider-Man and Peter Parker. But MM came after that?

How much does Sony own? And do they have the tv rights too? It seems cartoon version go under different contracts, so how about live action tv versions?

Miles Morales is an interesting suggestion - but I really think we'll see Spider-Woman on the show and because of that I doubt we'll see Ultimate Spider-Man. But who knows, Miles Morales is still awaiting his 616 debut so the MCU could go in any direction.

Can't wait.
