Heath Ledger's masterful performance as The Joker in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight unsurprisingly and deservedly received first place as the greatest comic book movie villain. Rounding out the top 3 are Michael Fassbender's nuanced and constantly engaging performance as Magneto and Tom Hiddleston's charismatic Loki.
Last place goes Parallax, a boring, characterless cloud that eats things in 2011's Green Lantern, followed closely by the Suicide Squad combo of Incubus and Enchantress, and the campy and cringeworthy Electro.
Now to settle the ever present debate: Which company makes the best and worst villains?
To do this, I have sorted the 40 included villains into 6 groups:
-
MCU (Iron Monger, Abomination, Whiplash, Loki, Red Skull, Mandarin/Killian, Malekith, Winter Soldier, Alexander Pierce, Ronan, Ultron, Yellow Jacket, Zemo, and Kaecilius)
-
DCEU (Zod (Shannon), Lex Luthor (Eisenberg), and Incubus/Enchantress)
-
The Dark Knight trilogy (Scarecrow, Ra's Al Ghul, Joker (Ledger), Two-Face, and Bane)
-
FoX-Men (Magneto (McKellen), Magneto (Fassbender), Apocalypse, Silver Samurai, Ajax, Donald Pierce, and Sebastian Shaw)
-
Sony (Goblin, Doc Ock, Venom, Lizard, and Electro)
-
Older/Other DC (Joker (Nicholson), Penguin, Catwoman, Lex Luthor (Hackman), Zod (Stamp), Parallax)
Then I found the average of their scores.
And the results are (from best at the top to worst at the bottom):
Studio/Classification |
Average Score |
The Dark Knight Trilogy |
82.6 |
FoX-Men |
125.1 |
Older/Other DC |
127.2 |
MCU |
127.3 |
Sony |
134.6 |
DCEU |
152.7 |
Well there you have it. The Dark Knight trilogy had the best comic book villains and the DCEU had the worst. Hopefully the DCEU is only going through a low slump with Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad and they can rise up again with Wonder Woman.
Thank you to everyone for participating and making this ranking a reality!
