Yesterday, the long-awaited Daredevil series finally released, taking in much positive reactions from fans and general audiences alike. However, one of the aspects of the show, being the main character's upgraded costume, split fans in terms of the overall design, but does the setting of the series have an effect on the outcome of the costume? Read on for more; spoilers ahead.

Ever since, and even before, it's release on Netflix, Daredevil has been receiving much positive reception from both fans and the general audiences alike, with one of the only backlashes and criticisms involving the design of Daredevil's upgraded outfit that is supposed to resemble, or be a work in progress of, that character's most primary and prominent suit worn throughout the comics and other different mediums. Even though the outfit is red, many people still see problems with the design of the outfit overall, which is why I'm here to explain why and how this is a suitable costume for the character within the ever-expanding mythos of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It must be understood that the costume of Daredevil wasn't changed just so he could look and whatnot, it was changed to meet the needs of Matt's war against crime as Daredevil. More specifically, his black spandex ninja-like costume wasn't providing him the support he needed for the purposes of combat and going against such threats i.e. Nobu, hordes of thugs, etc.  Therefore, wearing a similar outfit to 2003's Daredevil wouldn't have the most sense because the material in the suit and/or leather spandex wouldn't have made the greatest difference in terms of an upgrade from his black costume attire in the series. On the other hand, the upgraded costume he received in the series heighten's his chances of not running into a series injury dude to the suit's capbility of being slightly invulnerable to knives and bullets. It could also be noted that a few character's recommended that he'd get an upgrade in the first place.

Without a doubt, 2012's The Avengers had a huge impact on the Marvel Cinematic Universe with key events such as The Battle of New York, which involved the team going against the Chitauri invasion headed by Loki. Although it could be hard to imagine such an event sharing the same universe with the gritty, brutal, and dark Daredevil series, there was still a few nods to the event present in the show, which would be seen on newspapers, mentioned by characters, etc. However, it could also be very possible that this event had an effect on Daredevil's upgraded costume.

Within the series, it is Melvin Potter, who is known by Gladiator in the comics, is the one who designed and made the upgraded suit near the end of the season since his profession, in the series and comics, is costume designing/criminal outfitting, so Potter is one of the most suitable people to go to for an upgraded outfit. With that being said, it's safe to say that he was most likely inspired by Captain America's suit during The Battle of New York.
It cannot be forgotten that The Battle of New York was a massive event and posed as an endangerment to many parts of New York, including Hell's Kitchen to the point in which it'd be impossible not to know about it; it's an event nearly everyone in New York witnessed and also marked Captain America's first public outing within the modern time period, who also had one of the most grounded outfits on the team. With Daredevil looking toward's the goal of being the city's savior, it would make sense for Potter to be inspired by Captain America's outfit since both characters are highly-centralized in the areas of being a hero.

Although it could be noted that the show's producers found various costumes of Daredevil, such as his Secret Wars outfit and his Armoured Black outfit, this could be a possible explanation, within the show's universe, of why the costume turned out the way it did and so those in disagreement with the looks could understand the suit's actual purpose and possible background details of the design.

Let me repost my comment then

Agreed completely, I really didn't mind anything about the suit, I know it's weird to say, but the story and characters were so captivating, I didn't give two shits about his suit. Just like in TDK, where I didn't care for the puzzle look Nolan went for, since the story pulled me in so much, and both Daredevil and TDK had a reason to upgrade their suits.

If it makes sense to go there story wise, then by all means do it. I do not complain about that at all. Go wherever the story needs to go through an organic flow

I'm not a huge fan of his upgraded suit. I don't hate it, but I'm not in love with it. However the show runner has stated many times that Daredevil's suit will evolve over time. So I think next time we see Daredevil he will have a new SU it. Hopefully something closer to the comics

i'm not a big fan of the mask but i like the costume. And how cool was the last scene of the series when he jumped off the roof

I think it's pretty realistic besides the way he gets [frick]ed up so bad and recovers so quickly but that might be part of Stick's mystical ways that he taught Matt (even though I think he left before he could) as far as comic book movies and shows go it's grounded. I wish the fabric was lighter, like Fisk's suit is that thi armor, just like that but thin, cause when he's leaping around the red suit is too heaving looking and inflexible right now for him to do all the sweet maneuvering he was able to do in the black spandex

I don't like the suit they need to fix it for season 2

I like the suit, I just think the cowl is fugly(sorry I had to use that word). A few tweeks to the cowl would have done wonders. The funny thing is though, I was expecting that out of everything the cowl would have been the best part of the red suit when we finally got to see it. Also, I really loved the black paneling; I said it before and I stand by it, it's a good nod to how they color his suit in the comics.

My only problem, no DD on his chest.

You gotta have double Ds on the chest.

The show squanders the explanation given. I'd love to talk about how BS that was and why that only makes the upgrade besides the actual look of it even worse.
...oh well...

I don't dislike the suit, i can't say i love it. But i understood the influence of the Secret Wars and Armoured suits, the first time i saw it, and i can say im okay with. But i will like to remind the ones that don't like the suit. If i remember correctly, Gladiator, told Matt that the suit wasn't finished, which is why he told him that it might resist a knife wound. So if you don't like the suit or completely dislike it, have in mind that it is an incomplete job. That i bet they are going to finish in the next season... Because i doubt that with the success that this series it getting right now, that they aren't going to give it a season 2.

He doesn't have the DD on his chest because he only became known as Daredevil after he defeated Fisk. There'll be many changes to his costume in the seasons to come.

*sigh* more fanboys whining about costumes. *sigh*

It looks fine, although this whole "he's copying Capt. America" thing is just stupid. Cap had the least grounded suit of the Avengers. The costume in TWS and in AoU is much more grounded, and overall much better. Of all the Avengers, Cap is currently the only one to wear a true "superhero" costume. Thor wears Asgardian armor, Stark wears armor with repulsors. Black Widow and Hawkeye basically wore Shield uniforms in the first one, and wear variations of those now. Now I'm sure Cap's suit was made of body armor to help with knives and maybe even small arms fire, but I don't think grounded is the word to use for it.

Potter did say suit wasn't finished and that black would take more punishment, hence around vital areas like the gut and throat etc. We'll see a full red suit in season 2. Personally I quite liked it though.

I'm really glad that they included Potter as the guy who made the suit for him, one of the challenges they faced was having a blind character believably upgrade his costume in a convincing way. Tying that into Potter's work on Fisk's suits and his nature as a decent person being forced into working for the bad guy was an effective way of dealing with that.

And I do like the actual costume, I think for the most part it's pretty great. The major complaints I have are ones that it seems everyone else has as well - hopefully, now that he's called Daredevil at the end of the series, Season 2 will pick up with the DD logo already incorporated into the costume. I also think it'd be good to add a bit more red, especially to the gloves/gauntlets - maybe some red bandaging, to tie in to his father's boxing? And maybe he could wear tabi-boots rather than normal ones, to tie in to his ninja training?

And obviously the mask is the biggest issue, because for whatever reason it just looks odd. I'd start with getting rid of the Batman-style nose piece. Then get rid of those arched, M-shaped eyebrow things. I'd also make the eyes a bit bigger, and maybe instead of lenses or whatever, he could have black cloth underneath the eyes, perhaps implying that he's wearing some form of his original mask underneath the helmet? Could even have the black ties from his old mask hanging out the back of the helmet, to also tie in his ninja training.

Anyone have any idea how long until Daredevil season 2 comes out? Or do we have to wait till after AKA Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and The Defenders to get a Daredevil season 2?

I don't want to wait that long to see Daredevil season 2...

The reasoning behind him not having the double Ds on his chest was because no one called him the Daredevil until the paper came out the day after he revealed his new suit. I like the suit and I think that was a brilliant observation of where Potter got his inspiration from. I think its obvious now if you look at the similarities between Cap and DDs masks.

I'm not sure why the suit gets criticism. It looks fantastic. It does need the DD on the chest though.

I find it funny how so many people complain about Wolverine not having a proper costume but then with this people want DD to be running around in a shirt and bandana?

Weird.

A couple things to note; Melvin mentioned that the suit needs more work and the opening credits for each episode depict a more comic-inspired look for Daredevil. The costume is evolving as does the character.

in the dark the suit looked freaking awesome. In the light it looked like armor plated version of the DD suit. I think he will want a lighter less armored suit at some point and will get it.

@scottmontgomery- I think we will find out after the ratings are in of how many people watched the show. I think they will wait until after Defenders though. But After that I fully expect to see DD every year.

Daredevil will probably appear in other character's shows anyway, I gurantee he will appear as Jessica Jones' lawyer at one point

The funny thing is, the suit was designed to protect against guns and knives... But when it's finally used in the final fight against Kingpin - there are no guns and there are no knives.
