Ahead of Daredevil's release on Netflix this Friday, the show's head writer and executive producer Stephen S. DeKnight has been doing plenty of press to build up to the event. In an interview with Collider, DeKnight promised fans will get to see plenty of easter eggs:
"There are a ton of Easter eggs in this series. Some will be very obvious—a reference to the Battle of New York—and there are Easter eggs that are so obscure that I didn’t know what they were. Often times we need a sign in the background, and we always try to use those opportunities to dig into the Marvel universe, so Megan Thomas Brander, one of our Marvel people, we would send that over to her and say, “Hey, we need a sign out here. What do we got that would be good?” And she’d send back a list of like ten and I’d look at those, and I’ve read comics all my life, and I look at those and go, “I don’t recognize any of these!” So there are some Easter eggs that are really for the hardcore fans and there are some that other people will recognize."
Sadly, fans shouldn't expect too much in the way of The Defenders table-setting though. With fellow Netflix shows AKA Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist all airing after Daredevil's release, DeKnight commented on the difficulty involved in making universe-wide connections this early on:
"Referring to the other series, there really aren’t for the other series because we were in this odd kind of bubble since we were the first one and running and gunning to get it shot and didn’t have any scripts for the other ones, no one had been cast for the other ones, so we had to exist in this bit of a bubble."
DeKnight then said he hoped to see more of "a connection" in Marvel's second series, AKA Jessica Jones - but claimed he has so far "not had a chance to sit down" with the show's head writer, Melissa Rosenberg given the hectic nature of both their schedules.
