DAREDEVIL Stars Deborah Ann Woll And Charlie Cox Talk Karen And Matt's Relationship

"I think we definitely wanted to take a lot of the elements from the comic books from even the very beginning, the sort of naive, innocent Karen to the darker things towards the end." Deborah Ann Woll told IGN, "I was interested in how can I have her play both of those at the same time. Can she be a very kind person whose also like a little bit attracted to danger."

Charlie Cox then discussed the dynamic between the two characters, and how their relationship will translate from the comics to the show. "We're trying to tick as many boxes as we can. There's the superhero suit, and you know all this kind of stuff. At the same time you don't want the show to be a foregone conclusion." The actor revealed, "You dont want, for the fans,  the people to know what's gonna happen based on what they know from the comics. So you know  early on they meet Matt Murdock and they meet Karen Page , and I think a lot of people are gonna be like 'Okay we know how that goes,' and then you know maybe that's not as clear a path  as they might expect it to be."

Every time she talks, I'm more and more excited about her joining the MCU. She seems to be one of those actors that really gets how they fit into a broader picture and how to talk about it without being dismissive or seemingly depressed at the fact that she's adapting what are essentially superviolent melodramatic kiddy books.

I'm just trying not to get caught in a hype cycle, where I'm just watching the clock till this is released.

So far, I'm not doing a great job.

Really great answers.
Especially Cox talking about why these shows or movies shouldn't follow the comics step by step.

I do hope we don't get another "I'm obsessed with the mysterious man who saved me", we already have one Iris West on screen.
But I'm sure Karen will go beyond that.

Karen is probably one of the most tragic love interests of a hero.
She's so flawed and I think that's something that is really remarkable, she's totally different from Gwen, Pepper and Jane Foster, who seem very "perfect" like, the perfect woman, i guess it's good for audience to see the Hero get the "well rounded, perfect woman".
I'm excited that they're hopefully going to explore and touch upon this factor with Karen

Karen Page had such a crappy life in the comics.

@CherryBomb

That's what you get with comic writers being almost entirely men for the vast majority of the industry's history, and even today with female writers being almost completely relegated to writing for female heroes.

Most heroes' love interests are some version of the writer's idea of how women should be, or how women fail to live up to what they should be. The best that readers can usually hope for in well-rounded supporting characters is a writer having some particular quirk or fetish that incidentally makes that love interest... well interesting.

I'm not all that familiar with Karen Page (outside of the Lee/Kirby incarnation and some broad strokes from the internet), but I'm a little concerned with what they might do with her in the show. She sounds like she may have been "Frank Millerized" the way Speedy was, or half a dozen other supporting characters were in the late-80's early-90's, and while that wasn't all bad, just being dark, dingy, and [frick]ed up doesn't suddenly make a boring character into an interesting one.

...Just ask Speedball... or Penance... or is he Speedball again?
