Matt Murdock was officially brought into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Spider-Man: No Way Home, with Charlie Cox later suiting up in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. The response to both appearances was overwhelmingly positive and the actor will next be seen in Echo and his own series titled Daredevil: Born Again.
Cox's stunt doubt from Netflix's Daredevil, Chris Brewster, recently appeared on the Ikuzo Unscripted podcast and made some pretty bold claims about the upcoming Disney+ reboot/continuation which he feels will impact the quality of the action we watch on screen.
"They really, truly don’t want it to be anything like the Marvel Netflix Daredevil," Brewster claims. "So, nobody that worked on the original series, other than the cast that they’re bringing back, is coming back."
"It’s probably too late to change it now. Marvel has told every person working on that show that they don’t want 'Born Again' to look anything like the Netflix Daredevil series," he continued. "Trust me, not only did I work on the show, I was one of the biggest fans of the show."
Calling Daredevil "a masterpiece," Brewster criticised Marvel Studios' decision to rely more on VFX, going so far as to say, "If you watch She-Hulk, they turned Daredevil into a cartoon. It's all animated and it looks bad."
It's true that Marvel Studios is making sweeping changes to the Man Without Fear, but there's a good reason for the shift. Netflix didn't have the budget or inclination to portray Daredevil as more than a brawler, but the MCU is leaning more into the version from the comics who has near-superhuman abilities.
That required special effects (a stunt person can't jump from the roof of a multistorey car park to battle She-Hulk), something which will clearly carry over into Daredevil: Born Again. However, it's easy enough to appreciate why that might not sit well with Brewster.
Despite some delays caused by the WGA strike, the series is still expected to debut on Disney+ in 2024.
