THE DEFENDERS Characters May Not Be Making The Leap To Disney's New Streaming Service After All

It's been widely reported that Disney will bring all of its assets to that planned online streaming service but it appears as if the Marvel characters on Netflix will be staying put for the foreseeable...

Disney is the process of removing all of its films from Netflix and rival online streaming services because the company has one of its own currently in the works. One thing we have been wondering is what that means for characters like Daredevil, The Punisher, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage, with the prevailing opinion being that they'll all make the leap do Disney's unnamed streaming service instead.

Well, Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos has shared his thoughts on any potential complications in regards to the future of The Defenders, revealing to investors that the company has the rights to keep the series on the service (presumably because they invested in them) and that could mean they'll produce more shows featuring them. That, however, seems unlikely as they'd need Disney's say so.

"What Disney going direct to consumer means, I don’t really know and I’m not positive that they do either," he explained. "They’ve created some really killer brands. It’s not that exclusive… Netflix has the Defenders." If Disney does pull the plug on the future of The Defenders, that could mean characters like Daredevil and The Punisher will be brought to the big screen, possibly with new actors.

Sarandos concluded by saying that while Disney owns Marvel, they don't own all of Marvel's IPs outright and that can be read in one of two ways. Either Netflix will maintain the rights to the Marvel shows they've already produced or that they'll look to work with rival studios Fox and Sony Pictures to bring those characters to the small screen. Hopefully, more details on this will be revealed shortly.

@Krampus - I doubt that would happen. ABC are the ones producing the series, Netflix only distributes/streams it. Since ABCs making the shows and they're under Disney I doubt much would change regarding the shows if they move. I could be completely wrong, but that's the only thing I've heard.

@Krampus - If Disney does acquire Fox, I hope they keep Legion around.

@Ha1frican - Besides both marvel and fox worked on legion. So i doubt they would get rid of it.

@AbidNaga - exactly, I'm pretty sure Disney/Marvel made the shows. I think this guy is speaking out of his ass.

@osideous - says the guy literally speaking out of his ass lol. It’s produced by FX Productions a subsidiary of 21 Century Fox, Disney has nothing to do with it.

Yeah we'll see what happens i guess. I definitely don't want recasting. There are so many actors there that are perfect in their roles. Too many to list.

Just imagine at the end of the next trailer or the teaser for A4 ends with the Defenders standing together looking at the avengers confused. Doubt anything like that would happen but I'm hopeful for the NY invasion in infinity war amongst all the reaction shots of the people, to feature some of the Defenders guiding people to safety or looking up in fear. I feel like that'd work best for the movies in terms of acknowledging the shows.

The Russos may not have the main keys, but if anyone was going to at least consider/ponder DD, Punisher, etc. for their movie(s), its them and Markus & McFeely. Yes, all of them even over Feige.

It'd only be a pitch, not a decision, but again its the thought that counts.

Disney will make it happen. Netflix only hold distribution rights given the option of canceling the Netflix shows or getting a truck load of money to get out of their contract they'll choose the latter.

It might be a good move to effectively cancel all Marvel TV shows after Avengers 4 and then reconsider how the TV corner of the MCU works with the newly soft-booted MCU.

Maybe some shows will be completely re-imagined, maybe some will be reworked for the Silver Screen, maybe some will diverge into their own separate universe. Who knows?

The shows have always had a tentative connection to the MCU , at best. I think that might all change after Avengers 4. Especially now that there is more of a divide between Perlmutter and Feige.

"THE DEFENDERS Characters May Not Be Making The Leap To Disney's New Streaming Service After All"

Or it may. This story has been jumping back and forth and I guess writers can continue to breathe new life into this story every other week by just removing one word (Not). So, "they may make the leap" and the next story: "they may not make the leap". This is essentially what writers have done with this story since it began.

In the end, they still don't know and won't know until this either actually happens or it doesn't.

Until then, more "click-bait". I wonder how much longer before get another "it may" story. What a waste of time reading this.

Charlie Cox and Jon Bernthal. That's all I want. The rest can come or go, doesn't really bother me.

@Ragnarocknroll - Jon Bernthal is the definitive Punisher. Like, it really can't get any better than him in the role. I'd die if he was to go.

@Ragnarocknroll - Exactly, they are the only two I hope would stay and make it into the big screen. As for the others I dont even give two shit if they got recast tmr and especially the actor for Iron Fist, just god awful. Cant believe they renewed a season 2.
