LOKI Star Jonathan Majors Teases Kang The Conqueror's MCU Future And How He'll Differ To He Who Remains

After his blockbuster appearance in Loki, Jonathan Majors has elaborated on what he brought to He Who Remains and how Kang the Conqueror will differ as we head into the Marvel Cinematic Universe's future.

Disney+ released a new episode of Assembled today, though no one would blame you for not knowing. It wasn't promoted at all before arriving on the streaming service, a surprise considering how much the making-of documentaries for WandaVision and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier were hyped in advance.

Regardless, this Loki special is a must-watch and features heaps of new behind-the-scenes footage, concept art, and insight from the cast and crew (including narration from Tom Hiddleston).

The final few minutes put the spotlight on Jonathan Majors' MCU debut, with the actor explaining what he brought to the table as He Who Remains. Revealing that "the Wizard of Oz, Sunset Boulevard, Citizen Kane, [and] Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" were among the pop culture references he turned to for inspiration, Majors adds that he was looking to tap into "The archetype of the wizard and what happens to him when he gets bored and becomes a trickster."

"I think when we meet He Who Remains he's on the borderline of those two things. You don't really know where he's at and I think the ambiguity of that is one of the wicked things about it."

"He Who Remains has lived forever," Majors continued. "One of the great things I got to experience with our costume designer is that every piece we decided on was from a different place. The cape I had on was from the Victorian era. The shoes were from Genghis Khan. The pants from Mongolia, etc. You just mix and match it together and it informs the character."

While we know that the actor will play one of the Kang Variants in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, he went on to tease how any other versions we meet could differ from He Who Remains.

"I think with He Who Remains, the objective for me was to give me the largest canvas possible. From that, as Kang begins to rear his head and do his deeds, in many ways, he has no choice but to be in opposition or be different from He Who Remains," the Loki star explained. "That was the thing that grabbed me and pulled me into the role. Kang lives in so many iterations as He Who Remains says: 'Reincarnation, baby.'"

In other words, it sounds like we should expect Kang to be a vastly different character to He Who Remains; he'd clearly lost his mind during the countless lifetimes he spent ruling the TVA, and given how frightened he was of his Variants...well, something tells us those Kangs won't be quite as affable.

The Loki episode of Assembled is now streaming on Disney+.

''Disney+ released a new episode of Assembled today, though no one would blame you for not knowing.''

I was actually waiting for it. Same as for Black Widow, but as it seems that one isn't getting one (unless they dropped it a week after it becomes free on Disney+).

Anyway, looking forward to more Majors in any variant role. HWR was a joy to watch.

I'm gonna guess and slightly hope they do something more natural than the blue (looking) skin. The risk of another Apocalypse/Ivan Ooze distraction outweighs comic accuracy. Still, I think he'll be physically different enough while showing full acting range he's already displayed.

I do hope so as what we saw here was just some guy being a dick… And what does “it informs the character” means?

@Spike101 - it mean quite literally what it implies, that it informs the character.

I thought Lovecraft Country was hot garbage so I was concerned about Majors as Kang but I realized the shitty writing wasn’t in him of course. And then after this finale, I now realize how wrong I was to make any assumptions. He’s going to god-tier this [frick]ing role.

@McMurdo - watch The Last Black Man in San Francisco

One of the best and underrated films in the past few years with an Oscar worthy performance by Majors

Majors is a good actor, but I found his performance in Loki to be entertaining overacting. (To be fair, the series was full of overacting, so I suspect it's the fault of the director, not the actors).

I am glad that I got to know majors as a great actor in Lovecraft Country, or else I would be worried about him playing Kang going forward.

@Godzillakartttt - never saw any of majors previous work and I'm damn excited to see what he brings as Kang after seeing him in the finale.
And I'm a Kang enthusiast.

@Ace101 @Godzillakartttt - What I liked mostly was:
- He was excited with Loki and Sylvie and that showed (I don't think that was overacting at all).
- When they crossed the threshold and he didn't know what was coming next was awesome. Loved his acting there.

Hyped on what he's bringing to the table with Kang as well.

A guy who commanded a gigantic matter eating cloud dragon and ran a company that used infinity stones as paperweights said he was "the good one"

Somebody said Kang was so scary that even Kang was scared of Kang and I can't think of a better set up for teasing the next big bad. Ridiculously well written character so far

I mean while he was good enough in his debut, and understanding that he is a variant of Kang and there will be other interpretations, I was a bit let down b/c instead of being an intimidating bad guy he was just another guy. He did not convey the characteristics of someone who has shaped an entire universe's timeline and end a multiversal war with the scars to show it. He seemed more like a street-level villain that Daredevil needed to deal with.
I dunno I probably need to watch it again. I am looking forward to seeing the character again just need the intimidation to be higher.

@Turner - I am with you on this. I admittedly dont know much about Kang even though I grew up reading comics, and I was pretty disappointed when he was "just a guy" in the Loki finale. It was a pretty big letdown for me. I hope they do a good job of showing why he is a force to reckon with in the next few movies.
