Thanks to some set photos that found their way online, we suspected for a long while that Sophia Di Martino must be playing a female version of Loki. The truth was a little more complicated, of course, and the Disney+ series would reveal that she was actually a Variant of the God of Mischief.
What none of us expected was that the two Lokis would fall for each other, and the show soon featured a romance for the ages alongside an exploration of the MCU's version of the Multiverse.
Talking to The Wrap, Di Martino admitted that she anticipated a mixed response from fans.
"I kind of expected it to be pretty split and some people to be really into it and just going along with it for the fact that it's a sort of love story. And then I knew there would be some sceptical people who weren't sure," the actress said. "For me, it's kind of an exploration of self-love. It's not as straightforward as just two people falling for each other, who are versions of the same thing."
In the same interview, the Loki star also shared her thoughts on how Sylvie is feeling in those final moments of the series after delivering a killing blow to Kang Variant, He Who Remains.
"I think in the moments right after she's killed him, she's sort of waiting for some kind of relief, to feel better about everything. And I think then her thoughts start to turn to what if he was telling the truth? What if I don't have any free will? And what if a bazillion Bogeymen are about to come out and try and get me? So she's just sort of waiting to see what happens."
It's certainly going to be interesting to see where Sylvie's story goes next, though this romance could be at an end after she betrayed Loki and likely destroyed any trust he had in her. Throw in the fact that the God of Mischief is trapped in another timeline, and things can only get crazier from here...
