Moon Knight was released on Disney+ last year to positive reviews and, as far as we're aware, decent viewership numbers. As of now, there's no word on a possible second season and no firm indication that Oscar Isaac plans to reprise the role.
The first batch of episodes ended with Marc Spector and Steven Grant ridding themselves of Khonshu, only for a post-credits scene to reveal that the Moon God had stuck a secret bargain with a third personality: Jack Lockley.
That's a cliffhanger which needs to be addressed and, during a recent, translated, interview with ArabicMarvel.com (via The Cosmic Circus), director Mohamed Diab seemingly confirmed the plan was always for Moon Knight to be just six episodes.
"Marvel had determined it from the first day. Marvel's series projects are all six episodes except for special projects like WandaVision," he explains. "The usual format is six episodes. Loki is the only series they said will be in two parts from the first day. Marvel’s way is not the usual way where if the project succeeds, I say let’s renew it for a second season. It’s their plan, successful or not, they have a plan."
So, we remain in the dark when it comes to possible plans for more episodes, though it sounds like there's at least a chance it could happen...eventually.
For Diab, following the series with a movie would be a dream come true. "I wished this would happen. Firstly, I’m a cinema director...my budget was above $150 million, the same as a movie budget. But the budget in the action was spread over six hours instead of two. So, I could have done this action ten times better, but in less time. At that time, it was [one of] the most expensive series in human history. Every day I would tell them, 'This isn’t enough.'"
The filmmaker concluded by revealing he'd pushed for Marvel Studios to include another MCU character in the series as a way of exploring the duality of both Moon Knight and a certain Jade Giant.
"I would like to bring Hulk [into] the equation. Why? Because Hulk has two personalities. And Moon Knight has two personalities. Imagine that both of them can be friends and cause confusion - you’re friends with this one and not liked by the other. The complicated relationship and who can be friends with whom among the four."
If that movie happens, Diab may well get the opportunity. As things stand, we can't say for sure when or where Moon Knight will next appear, though there have previously been rumblings about him playing a role in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
Stay tuned for updates.
