MOON KNIGHT Director Talks Dashed Hopes For A Hulk Cameo And Whether A Second Season Or Movie Could Follow

Moon Knight director Mohamed Diab has revealed why he wanted to include The Hulk in the Disney+ series, while also revealing his hopes to return for a second season or perhaps even a "Moony" movie...

Moon Knight was released on Disney+ last year to positive reviews and, as far as we're aware, decent viewership numbers. As of now, there's no word on a possible second season and no firm indication that Oscar Isaac plans to reprise the role.

The first batch of episodes ended with Marc Spector and Steven Grant ridding themselves of Khonshu, only for a post-credits scene to reveal that the Moon God had stuck a secret bargain with a third personality: Jack Lockley.

That's a cliffhanger which needs to be addressed and, during a recent, translated, interview with ArabicMarvel.com (via The Cosmic Circus), director Mohamed Diab seemingly confirmed the plan was always for Moon Knight to be just six episodes.

"Marvel had determined it from the first day. Marvel's series projects are all six episodes except for special projects like WandaVision," he explains. "The usual format is six episodes. Loki is the only series they said will be in two parts from the first day. Marvel’s way is not the usual way where if the project succeeds, I say let’s renew it for a second season. It’s their plan, successful or not, they have a plan."

So, we remain in the dark when it comes to possible plans for more episodes, though it sounds like there's at least a chance it could happen...eventually.

For Diab, following the series with a movie would be a dream come true. "I wished this would happen. Firstly, I’m a cinema director...my budget was above $150 million, the same as a movie budget. But the budget in the action was spread over six hours instead of two. So, I could have done this action ten times better, but in less time. At that time, it was [one of] the most expensive series in human history. Every day I would tell them, 'This isn’t enough.'"

The filmmaker concluded by revealing he'd pushed for Marvel Studios to include another MCU character in the series as a way of exploring the duality of both Moon Knight and a certain Jade Giant.

"I would like to bring Hulk [into] the equation. Why? Because Hulk has two personalities. And Moon Knight has two personalities. Imagine that both of them can be friends and cause confusion - you’re friends with this one and not liked by the other. The complicated relationship and who can be friends with whom among the four."

If that movie happens, Diab may well get the opportunity. As things stand, we can't say for sure when or where Moon Knight will next appear, though there have previously been rumblings about him playing a role in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty

Stay tuned for updates.

@HammerLegFoot - Don't mind Oscar but hopefully they drop the director, lost all interest in that project the moment he was picked.

150 million for a Moonknight series with like 5 minutes of Moonknight in it? I wonder how much they paid Oscar. Try a lesser known actor and more actual Moonknight next time.

Oscar was great, Im just saying.

Get rid of the multiple personality angle and use a super villian like Green Goblin to prop his status up. That would make this a more popular franchise.

Spreading out anything (not just the action) over 5-6 hours instead of 2 is doing none of these shows a favor. The lack of actual Moon Knight is an example of that.

As for a second season, I don't need it. Especially knowing we won't see it this saga anymore anyway. I rather see a Special Presentation setting up his role in a Midnight Sons movie or show.

It's still one of my favorites when it comes to D+.

Don't even know how long it would take at this point to have further seasons, considering the already planned second parts of Loki and What If? have taken two years to come out, but it would be cool to get more of this kind of corner from Marvel, in MK focused projects. I know plenty people had major issues with the show and it is indeed quite messy, but damn, I really enjoyed getting all these ideas thrown at me. It made it the most enjoyable of their shows outside of WandaVision and Loki. It's not the most prime for the long term format, but I'm down.

Moon Knight had all the tools at its disposal (Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke for starters) to be fantastic and it still turned into mediocre Disney+ shit.

A Hulk cameo wouldn’t have changed that lolz

@TheLobster - Definitely not. It reviewed really well and a lot of folks regard it to be an excellent show.

@Variant - definitely don’t care what critics say when it comes to Marvel but just as many folks enjoyed the show (I’ve never seen anyone call it excellent lol) - many more have shared frustration and who can blame them?

Oh no I loooooove showing a whole 18 minutes of Moon Knight. Yeah; that’s some real storytelling!
TheLobster
TheLobster - 10/9/2023, 9:33 PM
@Variant - sorry I stand corrected: 15 minutes in one entire season

@TheLobster - Lol. Audience score was even higher. So there goes your argument.

But also, I'm really happy for you that you can cherrypick a video that you agree with. Great job. Gold star.

And lastly, it's hilarious you think storytelling requires Moon Knight to be fully suited up. Because really, most of the storytelling occurs when he's not fighting people and we're exploring why things are the way they are. Not to mention this is a dumbass argument in the first place considering this character has more than one personality and we're watching them all play out.
TheLobster
TheLobster - 10/10/2023, 2:07 PM
@Variant - didn’t cherry pick my guy. I can pull up plenty more. Also RT just got outed for being bullshit and yeah the general public still eat up mediocre Marvel shit - yay?

I could argue about how they underutilized their cast and IP or how annoying it was to watch them black out every time things were getting exciting due to budget restrictions which is a joke but hey - you like it and think it’s ridiculous to not so why bother.

The series could have been the best and it was instead largely forgettable.
Variant
Variant - 10/13/2023, 6:45 PM
@TheLobster - It got great reviews elsewhere, too. I just referenced RT because it's the biggest and most popular review aggregator at the moment.

So stop confusing your opinion with the consensus.

I liked MCU Moon Knight fine. Oscar Isaac did brilliant job and it was decent ride, questionable choices made in the finale notwithstanding, but, darn, it is worrisome, especially in terms of setting expectations for the Daredevil show, how little interest MCU seems to have for street-level stories. I didn't need my Moon Knight adaptation to be R-rated or as gritty as the Netflix shows, but I certainly didn't need his powers to be upped from the source material and the ending to feature a kaiju battle either.

At this point, Homecoming and Hawkeye are the closests things for street-level MCU stories and while I like both (especially Homecoming, which is probably the second best live-action Spider-Man movie), they don't have that "flavor" I enjoy in Marvel street-level stories.

"Because Hulk has two personalities" I don't blame him not keeping up with the MCU stuff, especially these days but I mean it's kinda his job, you'd think he'd have done his research because if he did he'd know that Bruce Banner and the Hulk are no longer 2 personalities, it's just Mark Ruffalo now.

Can we get a new show runner that will make an interesting, exiting action packed show that will get me hooked? This show was dull and boring and I had to force myself to finish it because I hoped that it’ll get better. It didn’t.

Off topic but I just saw that Gran Turismo movie and it was pretty solid. Some of these recent video game movies have been pretty good.
