MOON KNIGHT Head Writer Jeremy Slater Reveals Whether Blade And Werewolf By Night Were Ever Considered

Moon Knight embraced the MCU's supernatural side but was light on cameos, and Head Writer Jeremy Slater has now revealed whether Blade and Werewolf by Night were ever considered for the Disney+ series...

Heading into Moon Knight, it's fair to say we didn't expect the show would deliver such a deep dive into Egyptian mythology. In fact, most fans anticipated either a street-level adventure akin to Daredevil or a full-blown horror series harkening back to the character's earliest comic book stories.

Talking to ComicBook.com, Moon Knight Head Writer Jeremy Slater was asked if Werewolf by Night was ever considered for the series. Marc Spector made his debut in the pages of that character's solo title and with Jack Russell set to make his MCU debut in a Disney+ Halloween Special later this year, it would have made all the sense in the world for the werewolf to appear here first.

"There weren't discussions of doing Werewolf by Night per se, just because they had already had some plans for him, and Kevin [Feige] had an idea of how he wanted to use him, which I'm still not privy to. I'm as in the dark as you are," Slater admits. "We're told in advance which characters are a little bit off-limits. At the time we were cracking Moon Knight, they were also kind of trying to crack the Blade story and try to figure out what that was. I think they wanted to keep them separate."

So, no Blade and no Werewolf by Night. Slater would go on to say that he actually pitched the show with an image of Moon Knight battling "a giant, 12-foot-tall werewolf with glowing eyes," but when it became apparent they couldn't use him, that's when those Egyptian jackals ended up coming into play.

"The Marvel universe needs more monsters. It needs more horror. It needs creepy shit," he concludes. "This show is really our opportunity to start dipping our toe in the dark side of the MCU. We can be people's introduction to the sort of things that go bump in the night."

There are lots of rumours doing the rounds about Moon Knight's MCU future, including a possible appearance in that Halloween Special and even Captain America 4. Marvel Studios has yet to reveal what comes next for him, but fans are eager for news, especially after that big cliffhanger ending.

Do you wish we'd seen Moon Knight battling it out with Werewolf by Night or teaming up with Blade?

What is this, the fifth article from Josh about "characters the MK writer DIDN'T include"? How about you just save all these characters they didn't use and just make a list. You make lists all the dang time.

@TheFinestSmack - Oh he’ll still do a list article of these characters

@TheFinestSmack - no, that would make sense.

Never understood why either would show up. Made no sense.

@GhostDog - moon knight's first appearance was in werewolf by night

@Origame - I understand that but for the story they were trying to tell it would make no sense

@GhostDog - Because this was obviously early times of development. He said he pitched the show with Moon Knight fighting a werewolf. If he was pitching the show then that means they didn't have the story nailed down yet.

@CorndogBurglar - sounds like concepts on a white board

@GhostDog - I mean, when people pitch a show they usually bring some kind of visual aid, and an idea for the show. So him bringing the artwork with concept art of werewolf by night, it's because it's faithful to the character. He had an idea for the show but was told they can't use werewolf by night. So the story and show evolves from there.

@CorndogBurglar - That I know. Would’ve been a w idk it different show. Just the idea of him fighting werewolf by night

@GhostDog - I've said this in another post, but I wouldn't be surprised if we next see MK as an antagonist in Werewolf by Night. Makes perfect sense for Khonshu to send the Jake MK after WBN especially if it's right when WBN has just gotten his powers and hasn't learned to control himself. MK doesn't need to be the only antagonist, mind you, and we don't even need to really get into the Steven/Marc/Jake dynamic and just leave it as Jake's in control for that, so just another blackout for Steven/Marc, except we actually see MK fighting WBN and because it a werewolf Marvel doesn't have to worry about it being too brutal. Plus, you know, it's a Halloween special.

Did you guys consider Captain America?

Sure.

Mephisto?

Yep.

Squirrel Girl?

For about two seconds when I was eating my BLT on a park bench and saw a squirrel. It didn’t go anywhere though.

They should just wait with throwing all these character together until they do Midnight Sons. Doctor Strange, Blade, Moon Knight, Werewolf-by-night, and maybe even Black Knight are all around in the MCU. It's just waiting on Ghost Rider(s) and Mephisto now.

All they needed in terms of crossover is a Gorr connection.
