SHE-HULK Star Tim Roth On Whether We Should Trust Abomination And Sharing Scenes With [SPOILER]

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law star Tim Roth has weighed in on whether fans should trust Emil Blonsky now The Abomination is on the loose, while confirming he gets to share the screen with an unexpected actor.

Tim Roth recently made his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, marking the first time we've seen the villain since 2008's The Incredible Hulk. He appears to be a new man who has reformed, though we're still not entirely sure whether Emil Blonsky can be trusted.

He is The Abomination, remember, and a villainous turn would not be out of character for him.

Talking to Entertainment Weekly, Roth admitted that fans should keep a close eye on Blonsky now that he's a free man. "He's been kept in maximum security solitary confinement for a very long time. What does that do to someone? Where does that lead him? And who is this guy now? Should we have a leap of faith in him or not?"

"That's for you to find out," the actor continues. "The mischief is just all the way in there, and there's more to come. You'll see. I know what's coming. I hope we get away with it, I can only say that."

It became clear that something was going on with The Abomination when we saw him fighting Wong in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The latest episode of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law established that the Sorcerer Supreme took Blonsky there against his will, though Roth admits he hasn't actually watched that movie as of yet.

He did, however, have a little more to say about where his character will head next in this Disney+ series. Roth revealed that he gets to share the screen with Mark Ruffalo, suggesting Bruce Banner returns to Earth at some point after setting off in that spaceship last Thursday.

"There is a slight bit of confusion when I see him," Roth says. "We riffed on that a lot when we were shooting but I don't know if any of it made it in. 'You really put on weight,' that kind of stuff. It's very funny. But listen, I got to work with two great actors, that's the bottom line. Ed's fantastic, and Mark Ruffalo, I've always wanted to work with Mark Ruffalo, and I got to do it."

Roth did specify that he's unsure whether that scene made the final cut, but fingers crossed. Jameela Jamil has also been shown in a photo with Ruffalo decked out in his motion-capture costume, so we'd bet on the Jade Giant factoring into the show again soon.

The first three episodes of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law are now streaming on Disney+.

I’m hoping he “turns” soon because I’m not necessarily feeling the vibe they’re going with in regards to him. Fully understanding this is a show where everyone is put through a comedic filter too. Something tells me his whole schtick is bullshit but we will see.

But Tim Roth is clearly having the time of his life.

@GhostDog - he’s definitely the boss of the wrecking crew I feel.

He was obsessed with the hulk blood / powers before and if he can attain 7 wives in prison I’m sure he could figure out a way to get a gang of criminals

@GhostDog - Well, if you watch the sketches that they show during the end credits, one of them shows Emil being taken away in the "Release Transport" bus while he's smiling and waving good-bye to his crying "soul mates", and they've said before that the sketches hint at certain upcoming plot points, so...

@StSteven - good catch. I didn’t know that.

@GhostDog - Yeah I usually watch those sketches before the post-credits scene to see what little nuggets they are hiding in there. By this point about half are sketches of scenes that we've already seen (like the dinner with her parents) but they also slip new ones in there, so I wouldn't be surprised if we see a scene in the next episode or so similar to that sketch where Emil's basically happily waving goodbye to those women he has no intention of ever seeing again. He's basically waving and saying "Bye bye! Bye bye!" and then turns around and says "Bloody fools." and that's the end of the scene. I'm sure that he has money stashed away somewhere and doesn't need whatever funds those women promised him, nd he didn't put up any kind of opposition to the demands of the parole board (like having to wear the inhibitor), which all makes me think even more that by the end of this season (series?) we'll see Val (maybe in a post-credits stinger) welcoming him to the Thunderbolts and removing the inhibitor. And maybe, MAYBE we'll see a few of the other members like Walker and Yelena. We'll see...

@GhostDog - And, as an after thought, there was mention that "She-Hulk" will deal with some loose strings in the MCU (i.e. the Celestial in the Indian Ocean, the Sokovia Accords, etc.), so the mention of the fact that the Sokovia Accords still hold and that the US government still wants its own government sanctioned team of superheroes could be mentioned in the above stinger scene where Val explains to Emil that this is the reason for her putting together the Thunderbolts. That would be a nice, albeit brief, set up for the TB movie.

I'm not a fan of what they're doing with the character or really any of the Hulk characters since 2012. Like the Hulk himself, the Abomination went from being a menacing character to a joke and it looks like they're setting him up to be a more villainous Korg.

This is the real Abomination as far as I'm concerned:

Hell, even the Shang Chi version still had the monstrous voice:

This show also highlights how poorly developed the Hulk elements are in the MCU. Abomination tried to kill General Ross and Betty, and the Abomination killed several people, but you're telling me that neither of them showed up to shut down Blonky's porale? Not even a mention?

If you watch all of the Hulk's appearances in the MCU expecting a consistent arc, all you're going to get is jarring inconsistency and spur-of-the-moment decisions.

@Darkknight2149 - i think they are also factoring in the mitigating circumstances of the serum possibly affecting his behavior and him being a victim of a black budget DOD experimentation. Thats the card he played to she hulk and has probably being playing for years to get what he finally wanted which is freedom. they set a precedence by giving banner the benefit of the doubt and forgiving his uncontrolled rampages as dumb hulk as well. then you have wong who is a hero who fought thanos backing him up. so yes they let him go. and there is plenty of real world situations where killers have been released on parole with restrictions. thats why there is parole you know to release those who prove they reformed no matter what the crime.

@supermanrex -
The problem is that this is just an in-universe excuse to turn Blonsky into another jokey CGI monster. They even went out of their way to ditch the voice (which even Shang Chi kept) so that they could turn him into Korg 2.0.

Personally, I don't fully buy that Blonsky isn't bluffing. But the decisions made with the character in the show are shaping up to be less than stellar. Tim Roth is doing a great job with bad creative decisions and invasive jokes.

@Darkknight2149 - i find it fun to watch him in this. but rest assured they will put him back into one dimensional smashing shit and throwing cars for shits and giggles soon enough. his voice will rumble the theater seats during his twenty minute rampage. cause god forbid they give these villians more nuance than just smashing shit and cackling.

@supermanrex -
I mean, the Hulk himself has pretty much been a joke character since Avengers (2012). We got a little bit of the real, more nuanced Hulk in Age of Ultron and Thor: Ragnarok, but other than that, he's been bastardised ever since Ed Norton got the boot.

Darkknight2149 - 9/2/2022, 2:49 PM
By the way, to address your strawman, how is turning him into yet another "Lookie me, I'm CGI monster cracking jokes and doing silly shit" character (which are a dime a dozen in the MCU) less one-dimensional than portraying him accurately? They could easily keep the porale "General Ross messed with my head" storyline and expand on his character without doing that.

Although, I would argue that making Abomination human again already undermines his character arc in The Incredible Hulk.

@supermanrex - They can be nuanced without making them a joke. They can be nuanced without playing the "not actually evil" card. They can be nuanced and still be villains.

@MyCoolYoung - I can see Valentina recruiting him. The benefit for Emil is that'll allow him to remove his court appointed inhibitor. He might also tire of his soulmates by then and would welcome a work-trip at that point.

People have pointed out that he seems a bit "out of character" and while I'd argue that that's just down to him going through 14 years of character growth off screen, I did have a thought brought on by something he said in the last episode:

"I have changed. Emotionally, physically, metaphysically, spiritually, karmically, cosmically, inter-dimensionally..."

"Inter-dimensionally..." Kind of a weird way to talk about your personality changing, isn't it? And considering we're currently in the Multiverse Saga, which introduced the concept of Variants, and taking into consideration the fact that Abomination looks completely different to how he did in The Incredible Hulk (not only that, even his voice is different, no-longer becoming a deep and monstrous growl but instead remaining unchanged after transforming)

What if, somehow, the MCU version of Abomination was somehow switched with a Variant? Perhaps by accident if the Multiverse is becoming unstable, or perhaps by whoever hired the Wrecking Crew for some reason, or maybe even by Kang as part of an early set up for Kang Dynasty/Secret Wars.

Probably not true but thought I'd throw it out there.
