Why DC Needs To Step Up Their Game In TV As MARVEL Catch's Up

DC enjoyed a few years of winning the TV front with S1 and 2 of ARROW and The Flash but Marvel's recent moves has allowed them to catch up and soon surpass. What should they do?

The (Fictitious?) war between Marvel and DC are fought on 5 fronts! Movies, TV, Video Games, Animation and most importantly, COMICS! Marvel is currently ahead of DC in movies because they had a headstart on their cinematic unverse but DC has appointed Geoff Johns and John Berg as the head of their films studio which most open minded comic fans would think of it as a bold move and even Suicide Squad managed to do well at box office and Harley/Joker costumes were pretty popular this halloween. Marvel isn't slouching as they had Doctor Strange and 3 heavy hitters next year so competition is finally heating up!

As for Video games, Animation, and Comics, DC is winning all of those! Marvel has appointed Jay Wong (former Blizzard employee) as head of Marvel Games and will outsource their IP's to various Publishers and devs (like Spider Man is with Sony and Insomiac) but DC has Injustice 2 coming soon along with other unannounced games at their plate. Animation won't change anytime soon as Marvel slouchs with animation while DC has Young Justice S3 and JLA Dark coming soon. Comics, I don't need to explain! As long as Brian "SJW" Bendis is at control with Marvel's writing, they won't catch up with Rebirth.

So that leaves TV! This one was held by DC for a long tome starting in 2012. Arrow kickstarted the DC show trend and has created other fun shows such as The Flash, Legends Of Tomorrow, Constantine and Supergirl! Agents of shield was off to a bad start and to many is still not appealing since it doesn't revolve around any superhero until Season 4 with Ghost Rider. Marvel released a new show on netflix in march called Daredevil! This show would mark the rise in Marvel TV.

Daredevil brought a cinematic feel that all of the shows combined couldn't! It gave us a show with a short season, great cinematics & choregraphy, and a story without filler & romance. After Daredevil we got Jessica Jones, antother season of DD and Luke Cage! Next year we have Iron Fist, The Punisher and the Defenders! Along with that, ABC will release the Inhumans as an 8 episode show with a high budget thanks to IMAX.

DC's shows feel like they all suffer the same problems. Too much filler, low budget and TOO MUCH ROMANCE UGH!! It's a repeating trend much like the MCU's problem with villains and jokes that annoys me every time I wach them. The Dark Knight and Man Of Steel have such a great cinematic feel to them. What is holding back DC? My answer is simple: The CW.

The CW is the issue! Network has a great influence on the quality of the show. Look at Fox, Legion looks great! Do you know why? Because FX can make quality shows! Netflix can make quality shows! CW can't! They pursue the "teen romance/drama" audience too much. The CGI for Ghost Rider in AOS looks amazing I want to see that for Firestorm!

Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy the DC shows but I would kill for a Batman show on HBO or Netflix! What do you guys think?

Marvel catches up? I didn't read, but marvel hasn't "caught up". They are ahead, and have been ahead for 2 years, and have ran away with it (in live action at least).Do agree DC needs to step it up, they also need to get back to making some of their great animated films since they havn't had one for a couple years. Marvel needs some as well.

As far as who wins what, are these your opinions, or what you think are facts? Cause the last numbers I seen Marvel still wins the year for comic sales. Rebirth put DC ahead a couple MONTHS. I want to see some updated numbers. I don't really care, but it would be nice to see those numbers in your article.

And with games, doesn't Marvel have more available right now? How many mobile games do they havery now? Plus Marvel Heroes on PC. People only seem to think about consoles. Come on get some real facts in there if your going to write a piece.

the dc shows generate more money than the marvel ones.
I also think arrow this season is the best since season 2.
I think once the at&t deal is complete you will get another series in the vein of daredevil.

@tonytony - So since DC said outright how much revenue their shows bring in, you assume they make more? How much does Marvel's shows bring in? Come on guys, use the Internet and show some facts.

Maybe DC does make more, but nobody brought this up until DC said how much they make. Do some research before you try to use this in your war against Marvel.

" Marvel is currently ahead of DC in movies because they had a headstart on their cinematic unverse"

marvel isn't ahead because they started a decade ago.

they are ahead because dc didn't even [frick]ing try. don't point fingers at anyone but the [frick]ers involved with this mess.

Marvel Studios didn't have a headstart, WB/DC did....30 years before Marvel Studios first movie.

Not only did WB have a headstart of three decades, they also had all the DC characters under the same roof, including all the big guns and most iconic cb characters.

Add the fact that WB was in a much better financial state than Marvel when it launched IM putting some assets as a guarantee, i would say that Marvel Studios did a much better with 70% lesser assets/advantages and more guts than WB had for decades in an environment where it had zero competition at that...

There is no excuse why WB/DC, having launched countless of movies before Marvel had even a studio, is trailing Marvel that much in terms of consistency in a minimal of quality movies in, movies out.

You can't start with Superman the movie in 1978 and end up releasing lack of quality as low as GL, SS or even Jonah Hex had, 30 years and as many movies later....like you have not learned during all those years to render a minimum of quality most of the time.

WB is supposed to be the professional one, the most experienced one when it comes to cbm making.

It has been dealing with the same characters for decades. It has been doing cbm before anyo other studios. They are not the underdog or the one who came later in the game and has to pick up the leftovers...

They started the game, long before anyone else and played along and alone in a much less competitive environment for two decades prior the likes of Blade, Xmen, Spiderman.

They should have succeeded in adding some quality value to their offer more systematically before Raimi Spiderman was even released.

They should have been the one implementing the shared universe concept and paving the way ... and even in the case they had to follow Marvel's lead, they should have showed that they had much more movies produced under their sleeves than any other studios, and could deliver better movies consistently like the specialists they should have been after so many decades in the business.

The only reason why all these didnt translate into an all around success able to rival Marvel with their current movies is because of their laziness and mismanagement of their porfolio for so long.

It's a studio problem that has prevailed for decades within WB when it comes to dealing with DC properties.

They had it easy for so long, not having to fight to get their big guns and characters, not having to fignt against MARVEL movies that were non existant, not having to fight to have money to make movies, that they rested on their laurels for so long, taking all for granted, never or so rarelly showing love for those characters to give them Justice.

Plus WB never had to use only DC to maximise its finance like an all CBM studio a la Marvel. It had other properties to make money and could be lazy with DC.

They got Donner, Burton and Nolan, basicly a decade and some years apart while 95% of all that is in between what is directed by those three doesn't even qualify as decent movies.

Again, that's creative laziness and mismanagment from WB's part.

They just woken up, tickled by Marvel success since TA.

Problem is they are more reactive than really doing their own thing at their pace with much mor thinking. Hence why they still make some fundamental mistakes.

@Jazzy4 - Thats a good history of DC movies but the really sad bit is the recent movies they have done. The money driven decisions they make has impacted they great stories they could be producing on film.

For a movie where Superman meets Batman and Wonder Woman to do so poorly is an indisputable disgrace.

Meanwhile Marvel kicks their arse with a talking raccoon and a tree man??

I got very angry upon reading your use of the term "SJW" as an insult.

Yes, some people may not express their opinions in very nuanced ways, and in the process may come across as overly sensitive (despite the merit of their arguments). Others may legitimately take their arguments to the extreme (e.g., those people who claim that all sex is rape).

But many people who are called "SJW" simply have viewpoints that are unpopular with many fans (e.g., that diversity should be encouraged, that "the Fappening" was an invasion of privacy).

And, in my experience, many people who use the term "SJW" do so as a method of invalidating someone's entire viewpoint. In other words, rather than trying to understand someone else's perspective, they simple label that person an "SJW," so their viewpoint no longer matters.

Just because Bendis is in favor of more diverse characters doesn't make him bad person. You may disagree with the fact that many of his new, minority characters took on roles more traditionally held by non-minority persons, rather than entirely new roles, but that doesn't mean his opinion is invalid.

Some people think pushing for more diversity in media is a noble goal. Some people think that the best way to do that is by putting new characters in immediately recognizable positions. You may disagree. But to insult them isn't moving us anywhere. It just gives fanboys a bad name.

That being said, if someone continually uses the term "SJW" to describe people like Bendis who (whether or not you agree with him) is working toward what he believes is a positive goal, I'll be forced to refer to those individuals as "MRA-holes," "sexists," "racists," and whatever other terms equally invalidate their opinions without listening to them.

Romance is not a problem, the problem is the CW puts too much time into it not just with their Superhero shows but every show they produce.

The CWs target audience is women between the ages of 15-35 and now they are trying to bring in male audiences and so far it's worked.

Marvel has the blessings of Netflix and ABC to work with.
