Despite praise from both critics and audiences alike, don't expect to see Hannibal Season 4. NBC has officially announced the cancelation of the acclaimed series, which is currently into its third season. Despite being highly regarded by virtually anyone who's seen it, Hannibal has struggled with low ratings for a while now, hitting a series low on 12 June 2015 with a total of 1.66 million viewers.

NBC released a statement on the cancelation:

"We have been tremendously proud of Hannibal over its three seasons. Bryan [Fuller] and his team of writers and producers, as well as our incredible actors, have brought a visual palette of storytelling that has been second to none in all of television — broadcast or cable. We thank Gaumont and everyone involved in the show for their tireless efforts that have made ‘Hannibal’ an incredible experience for audiences around the world."

According to previous statements made by showrunner Bryan Fuller, a total of six seasons were planned for the series. Season 4 of the show would be a continuation of the Red Dragon storyline (which will begin in Season 3), Season 5 would be The Silence of the Lambs, and Season 6 would be set in the era of the 1999 novel Hannibal.

More news is expected to break regarding the show's cancelation. Hannibal Season 3 is currently airing on Thursday nights on NBC with brand new episodes and is expected to continue throughout the remainder of the season unless NBC says otherwise.

SYNOPSIS

The dark and haunting series "Hannibal" returns for a third season, revealing the fates of characters hanging in the balance, and the continuing psychological cat-and-mouse games they face.

After the shocking events of the Season 2 finale, Hannibal (Mads Mikkelsen) is on the run in Europe - accompanied by his psychiatrist Bedelia Du Maurier (Gillian Anderson) - sporting a new identity, but servicing the same insatiable appetite. As the lives of Will (Hugh Dancy), Jack (Laurence Fishburne) and Alana (Caroline Dhavernas) converge toward Hannibal again, each with their own motivations to catch him once and for all, their deadly dance turns in startling and unexpected ways.

And on that note I'm officially done watching anything NBC related! Way to [frick] your audience over!

At least I can live more positively knowing another channel or streaming service will more than likely pick this up.

Considering it's a quality show on NBC, Fuller & Co. should count themselves lucky to have gotten three seasons. Ever since Kings' cancellation I've been weary about getting too attached to any of NBC's shows that are actually interesting.

@JamesMann, @Nick56 - How does blaming NBC for this make any sense at all? You must know nothing about Television or how to run a successful business.

Yes, lets blame NBC for pulling the plug after promoting the SHIT out of a show for 3 years and allowing it to air for 3 Seasons.. because you know.. it's NBC's fault that no one tuned it to watch it.

NBC gave Hannibal every chance in the world to succeed, but when no one tunes in.. what you gonna do? You can't just say, "Well.. it costs us a lot to produce it, pay the Actors and promote it. The critics love it. It wins awards. And no one watches it. So let's keep it going. Fingers-crossed it turns around".

This might have worked for Seinfeld back in the day, on a show that cost next to nothing to make, with little to no advertising. No one watched that show till what, Season 3? Then all of a sudden it blew up. Biggest comedy on TV.

This doesn't happen with Drama's. You have a small window, a small chance, and if it wasn't for the critics and awards, they would pulled the plug after season 1.

So don't blame NBC, blame the people who didn't watch it.. which is pretty much everyone.

And to the author @Darkknight2149

"...most critically acclaimed TV series on network television"

This is a false statement.

SIDE POINT: Since the show isn't Produced/Owned by NBC, they are shopping it around. Guaranteed the show finds a new home by the end of the next week if not sooner.

@AsapJoker - I love Community

However, again.. NOT NBC's fault. NBC can't force people to watch TV. They hyped Community, they moved them around, they tried everything they could to make it work. It lasted 5 Seasons.

In all honesty, NBC letting them go and then getting picked up by Yahoo! was the best thing that happened to Community. It proved the audience was "there" but just not at a scheduled time. So now we have a genuine chance at a movie

Bryan Fuller's comments are confusing. Sounds like he's done with Hannibal somewhat...idk. he does have American Gods coming so, will he just focus on that and not reviving hannibal???!

@bigdannymac except NBC threw it to the death time slot on Friday nights right from season 1. Thats a literal death sentence for most TV shows. I get why NBC cancelled it, hell im surprised it even made it to season 3 but with Hannibal now gone NBC has nothing worth watching. Hannibal was always a show too good for NBC anyways so I hope some other more competent network picks it up

@bigdannymac good then. Hoping netflix or a premium cable network. Hannibal was already pushing boundaries on network tv. A stream service or premium cable would allow for more risks...welcome risks haha

Not a false statement. Nearly every review I've read has said that this is the best show on network television (I.E. broadcast channels) and people who are caught up with show seem to agree. If anything, it is an ARGUABLE statement.

Now, if we are talking about TV as whole (I.E. every single, show, ETC), then it would be a false statement.
