AHSOKA: Is Abeloth The STAR WARS Franchise's New Big Bad? The Mortis Gods Explained - SPOILERS

The season finale of Ahsoka featured a nod to The Mortis Gods, but is Abeloth the one calling out to Baylan Skoll? It's complicated, and we're now making sense of where the Star Wars franchise is heading!

Ahsoka delivered a mostly satisfying finale, anyone without a near-encyclopedic knowledge of The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, and even the Expanded Universe may have found themselves at least a little confused at times.

It was in The Clone Wars that we first met The Ones - later known as the Mortis Gods - ancient beings who are thought to have been there when the Force first came into existence. The Father, who loves his children equally, represents the balance between the Light (The Daughter) and Dark (The Son). His children drew their power from the Font of Power and Pool of Knowledge, making them immensely powerful, God-like creatures.

The Font is strong in the Dark Side and grants its user power over the past and the future; the Pool, on the other hand, is bathed in the Light Side and contains limitless knowledge.

As we've already explained, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and Ahsoka Tano eventually encountered The Ones, learning The Father hoped Anakin might take his place due to the Jedi's conflicted nature. Instead, The Son accidentally killed The Daughter, and The Father took his own life to rob his Son of immortality (allowing Anakin to deliver a killing blow to the out-of-control God).

We're pretty positive that their stories have ended, though it's feasible that Filoni plans to use some of Ahsoka's leads as stand-ins for The Ones. Ahsoka, for example, still seems like an obvious choice to take the place of The Daughter. This may have even been his original plan for the former Jedi, hence why she showed up at the end of Star Wars Rebels looking so different before Ahsoka retconned her transformation.

Also of note is the fact The Ones have ties to the World Between Worlds and the Nightsisters, so their importance to the wider Galaxy can't be underestimated.

Their time appears to be over, and more intriguing now is what calls to Baylan Skoll on Peridea. We see The Father's gigantic statue pointing to a light in the distance, and while The Son also stands tall, The Daughter has crumbled away, a hint perhaps that Darkness is the predominant Force in this Galaxy.

As for who is calling out, we believe it's The Mother, a.k.a. Abeloth.

An Expanded Universe/Legends character, she was a servant to The Ones who eventually took on a mother-like role in the family. Despite initially keeping the warring children in check, she fell into temptation and her own quest for immortality saw her draw from both the Font and Pool.

As a result, she became wildly powerful and transformed into a monstrous and near-unstoppable Dark Side being called Abeloth. The Ones, horrified by her betrayal and what The Mother had turned into, imprisoned her within a planet and left to take refuge on, you guessed it, Mortis.

She remained safely imprisoned until they died and, with her cage weakened, Abeloth was ultimately freed by the son of Han Solo and Princess Leia, Jacen Solo (not to be confused with Jacen Syndulla). She wreaked havoc across the Galaxy as an even greater threat than Emperor Palpatine but was eventually stopped by Luke Skywalker. Even after her defeat, though, he feared she would return.

It's unclear how Grand Admiral Thrawn, the rise of the First Order, and Supreme Leader Snoke's emergence will tie into this (if indeed they do) but all signs point to Abeloth becoming the focal point of Star Wars storytelling in the years ahead.

Now, Filoni just needs to make it make sense for casual fans...

I guess it could be what is calling out Baylon, but I neither want that arc to be continued nor the Mother as next big bad. Much rather see the Yuuzhan Vong (or Grysk in canon I suppose), Lumiya or Darth Krayt after Thrawn.

@bkmeijer1 - I was actually hoping that the Yuuzhan Vong would be confirmed by the end of the Season since one of the latest mainstream scoopers dropped spoilers about all that we've seen since episode 6 and forward. All they said ended up being basically confirmed and I thought that an alien race that can't exactly be sensed by the Force like them would make for a new feasome challenge.

I still would like to see them appear and make the jump from the EU/Legends continuity to the canon now, just like how Thrawn did it.

@NinnesMBC - and since the Yuuzhan Vong are from a different galaxy, it could very well be the Peridea galaxy. Even though they can't be detected by the force, maybe Baylan was still sensing them somehow?

@bkmeijer1 - I've not read the EU
Can you briefly explain why fans are eager for the Yuuzhan Vong?
Are they similar to Annihilus and his army?

@Vigor - I guess you could compare them that they are looking for domination and destroying anything that doesn't fit their worldview. Which in case of the YV is very technophobic.

I can't speak for all fans, but I wanna see them because the different kind of force they are. They are not in touch with the force at all, are very different from any empire and just forces the hero faction to think very differently in how to tackle this enemy

@bkmeijer1 - sounds interesting. Especially the technophobic part

@Vigor - it is. And I hope that if the Grysk take their place (which the canon Thrawn novels are kinda setting up), I hope they keep that part. Because that's probably what makes them stand out the most imo

Now more than ever in this hiatus of Star Wars content it's gonna be necessary to revisit the Clone Wars series to get more in touch with this lore because it's definitely just the beginning of where Filoni wants to take things in Ahsoka Season 2 or somewhere else.

I've seen some art work of how Abeloth looks like and she has a terrifying design, it's almost creepypasta tier so to speak.

And it would be very cool if the lore of the Mortis Gods was directly referenced in James Mangold's film about the origins of the Force and of the first Jedi that harnessed it. Tons of things to keep an eye out for.

@NinnesMBC - I do hope we get some more Peridea/Mortis Gods/Zeffo lore in that Dawn of the Jedi movie. I like the mystic side of Star Wars, and that's the perfect opportunity to explore that imo

"The Daughter has crumbled away, a hint perhaps that Darkness is the predominant Force in this Galaxy."
actually when a person of the dark side was in this area it would be easy to assume they would destroy the image of the daughter to prevent followers in 'false gods'...
This is a typical action of warlords destroying temples, mosques, sacred objects to remove the god from the locals and made them pay homage to the warlord instead.
