Over the past 24 hours or so, a photo that's alleged to be from the set of Ahsoka has been doing the rounds online. Showing Rosario Dawson's heroic former Jedi squaring off with Ray Park's Maul, it's not hard to understand why fans started getting even more excited for the upcoming Disney+ series!
After all, The Clone Wars saw the former Sith Lord repeatedly take aim at Ahsoka, while their rivalry was revisited when Maul later set his sights Ezra Bridger in Star Wars Rebels.
Unfortunately, it appears the photo is a cleverly staged fake. While the original poster claimed to have been given the image from someone who had stumbled across Ahsoka shooting in New Mexico, something doesn't add up. For starters, you'd think there would be better security on set, while Lucasfilm would almost certainly use The Volume for a scene this spoilery.
In terms of continuity, unless this is a flashback, Maul's presence at this point in Ahsoka's life doesn't make sense. The series is set after the events of Return of the Jedi, and Maul actually died at the hands of "Ben" Kenobi prior to A New Hope. There had previously been rumours about the iconic villain appearing in Obi-Wan Kenobi, with Ray Park reprising the role. Throw in chatter about a Star Wars project being shot in New Mexico, and there's always a (slim) chance this is real.
However, the reliable folks over at Bespin Bulletin have since Tweeted out, "I've had 18 messages from people all asking about an image showing a scene being filmed between Ahsoka and Maul. It originated on Reddit with the user having ties to cosplay. Cameras in the image aren’t the ones they use. Ahsoka doesn’t film for a couple weeks. Fake mate."
We tend to agree with that assessment as this all looks a bit too low budget for our liking. We'll give them credit for fooling the internet, though, and it would be cool to see this battle in live-action!
