OBI-WAN KENOBI: Lucasfilm Executive Debunks Reports Darth Maul Was Once Set To Appear In The Series

We recently learned that early plans for Obi-Wan Kenobi called for Darth Maul to be the show's lead villain. However, one Lucasfilm executive has been quick to call "bullsh*t" on the report...

We recently learned that Lucasfilm once planned to use Darth Maul as the main antagonist of Obi-Wan Kenobi, with the former Sith Lord set to pursue his old foe and a young Luke Skywalker. Ray Park was reportedly on set preparing for his return until production was paused due, in part, to the show being too similar to The Mandalorian

Now, Darth Vader will take centre stage as Obi-Wan Kenobi's big bad, while the focus is expected to shift from Luke to his sister, Princess Leia.

While The Hollywood Reporter mentioned in their story that "A Lucasfilm source contradicted the account, saying Maul was never intended to return for the series, nor did Park come to set," Lucasfilm Creative Executive Pablo Hidalgo has now weighed in on social media with a very blunt response.

In a screenshot shared by StarWarsNews.net (via SFFGazette.com), he dismissed the report of Darth Maul's return by stating, "A brown sun rises. Bullshit has been spilled."

We don't find it remotely hard to believe that there were plans for this villain in Obi-Wan Kenobi. After all, A New Hope made it extremely difficult to reveal that the Jedi crossed paths with Darth Vader again after Revenge of the Sith (we're curious to see how the Disney+ series pulls that off...), and Maul pursuing the Jedi who sliced him in half at this point in the timeline could have worked.

However, it might have also been a tad underwhelming, as Star Wars Rebels has already established that Obi-Wan defeated Maul years later during a brief battle on Tatooine.

That’s got to be very embarrassing for the Hollywood Reporter, if this story really is bullshit.

THR claims they are full of shit. I trust Lucasfilm as much as I trust them. Lol which amounts no trust at all.

@McMurdo -
Why wouldn't you trust The Hollywood Reporter? THR, Deadline Hollywood, and Variety are literally the three most reliable sources in the industry. Where do you even get your news then?

@Darkknight2149 - He’s saying he doesn’t trust Lucasfilm, not THR. Which he’s not wrong.

He said "I trust Lucasfilm as much as I trust THR. Which is not at all." I get not trusting Lucasfilm, but why not THR?

I’m sure Obi Wan has gone through so many drafts that it’s reasonable to think he was part of the storyline.

Whether or not he was part of the D+ show they’re giving us? Maybe not.

@regularmovieguy - oh id bet money Maul was in a draft at some point over the years. Now whether or not it was so far along into production that he was actually on set, that I call bullshit.

It would've made zero sense when you consider Rebels. If they did consider it, it would be dumb on the part of Lucasfilm.

@BlackBeltJones - It would’ve been dumb, but if the opportunity came up, i could 100% see them retconning that so they could have their confrontation in live action.

@DaHyro - The temptation of a live-action confrontation would be great but it would be a huge retcon.

Seeing as how you guys made a separate page for SciFi fantasy, can we please move the star wars shit to that web page please?

@eGGtheGreat - I like it this way. And it's not like its unrelated, because Star Wars is massive in comics too

“After all, A New Hope made it extremely difficult to reveal that the Jedi crossed paths with Darth Vader again after Revenge of the Sith”

Same could be said that:

Revenge of the Sith and The Original Trilogy made it extremely difficult to believe that Anakin Skywalker had a Padawan named Ashoka who turned out to be just as important part of life as Padme, Obi-Wan or anyone else…

And yet…here we are

I loved rebels but that was the most disappointing fight EVER... however, the context leading up to the duel, and his closing remark was a perfect ending for Maul.

I for one would of loved to see Maul come back, however, i have no problem with them using Vader.

I just hope the quality is Mando level, not Bobba, which i enjoyed but wasnt nearly as good

eh it's a shame that Rebels is canon ;/ of course I would love Maul to appear here instead of mid kids show which blocked some great options for his presence
