OBI-WAN KENOBI Star Ewan McGregor Reveals When Shooting Begins And Teases Alec Guinness's Influence

Ewan McGregor was a guest on tonight's The Graham Norton Show, confirming during his appearance that the plan is for Disney+'s Obi-Wan Kenobi to begin filming "in March of next year."

The actor also shared some insight into how Star Wars actor Alec Guinness' portrayal of the Jedi Master will influence his performance here, and how it affected his work in the controversial prequels.

"The fun thing about doing them in the first place, when I was much younger, was trying to imagine Alec Guiness - how would he play these scenes as a younger guy," McGregor says. "And it led me to watch a lot of his early work, which I hadn't seen before. Brilliant movies, wonderful films that he'd been in...and I just had such a great time sort of studying him in those movies."

There was a great film called The Card, that I'd never seen, about a ragged old man who ends up being a sort of mayor of a town or something. So as you say. I'm much closer in age to him and it will be my challenge to try and sort of meet him somewhere."

"I love Alec Guiness, I never got to meet him, but I love him through his work and it's a great honor to sort of try and pretend to be him," McGregor concluded, teasing his older take on the legendary Jedi.

There are rumors that Obi-Wan Kenobi will follow the iconic hero both during his isolation on Tatooine and the Clone Wars, with Hayden Christensen reprising his role as Anakin Skywalker. If so, we're in store for a real treat, as that live-action version of the animated series should be absolutely epic!

I’m cautiously optimistic and excited about this

@lawndart - I'll believe when I see a trailer. This project has been delayed so many times its really hard to really giv a crap anymore.

The palpetine/skywalker saga is already over. Its like watching the Hobbit knowing how everything already plays out in LOTR

So looking forward to this.

This has Always been one of my favorite aspects in regards to Ewab McGregor playing the role in the public esteem and admiration in which he held Alec Guinness as an actor and his performance in a new Hope.

It’s very reminiscent to how Mark Hamill described how he felt working with Alec Guinness even back in 77 which I think speaks to how much of a Hollywood acting legend Alec Guinness was even if he has been unfortunately somewhat boxed in by only the Star Wars character for newer generations.

I'm not sure how I feel about yet another prequel, but I really like Ewan McGregor (and (him as) Obi-Wan) so I still look very much forward to this

Something interesting about the Obi-Wan character is that, unlike Anakin and Padme, we know very little about him apart from the fact he was a Jedi Knight. We know nothing about his childhood, his family, and we didn't even know he used to have something of a fling with Satine of Mandalore until The Clone Wars.

There is potential here for new stories, not just some weird hermit trying to be nobody while protecting the farmers from Jabba's thugs.

I really hope this show happens, I'd still prefer a movie to a series but I won't too picky regarding my SW. Especially since television wise the SW universe has run a lot more steady than in the theatrical department.

However because it bears repeating:
I hope Disney+ does a lot more sequels to lesser successful film sagas to bring them to a proper close. Save money by shooting on the Unreal Stage they had for Mandalorian and shrink the scale and all of a sudden open ended movies or even series can be brought to a close.
Solo 2, Artemis Fowl 2, Alice 3, Tomorrowland 2, Muppets 3, John Carter 2 and Tron 3 come to mind.
The same way Disney dominated the home video market in the 90s/00's via their direct-to-video sequels this form of direct to streaming sequel strategy could help them gain more of an audience.

Having worked with virtual production recently I'm just so freaking stoked by the technology and elimination of tedious workflows. Shots that would have taken us months to complete are simply shot in a day's work.
Crazy really.

I mean...I'd love to know what Universal's direct to DVD studio Universal 1440 is going to do with this tech. They could damn sure make a fourth Mummy movie for the streaming market on the cheap. And better looking Scorpion King movies are a probability as well.

It would be amazing if they flashed back and forth between Obi-Wan in exile and the Clone Wars, but I can imagine the budget needed for that to be far too much for a TV show. Maybe just a battle scene or two?

@BestAtWhatIDo - Looking at Mandalorian I could see that happen. They really have something there

@Blergh - Mandalorian looks great, but clearly their ambition is somewhat lower. That show doesn't have the budget of, say, Game of Thrones, which is what you would need for a real galactic battle.

The main thing I want to hear at this point is that Joel Edgerton is confirmed to return.

Cautiously optimistic. McGreggor was a bright point in the prequels. Anyone know who the show runner is on this? Any involvement from the good side of Lucasfilm (Dave Filoni not Kennedy)
