This week's episode of The Mandalorian kicks off with Din Djarin and Grogu making their way to Tython so The Child can reach out through the Force and hopefully find a Jedi willing to train him. As the bounty hunter gets his ward to use his powers with that knob from inside the Razor Crest, he's clearly emotional about potentially having to say goodbye...and it's then the title card comes on screen with the words, "The Tragedy." Brace yourselves, folks, because this is a tough one.
Placing Grogu on top of the rock Ahsoka Tano told him about, Din is confused when nothing happens. However, upon noticing a ship heading to their location - it's Slave I - he turns back to see that The Child is surrounded in an energy field as he meditates and seemingly communicates through the Force. The Mandalorian is unable to break through that barrier, so has no other choice than to see who was aboard that ship. Coming face to face with Boba Fett (as he appeared in "The Marshal"), he learns that the armour he retrieved from Cobb Vanth belongs to this man. Upon realising Fett never took the creed, however, he refuses to return it, but then learns that Fennec Shand has a rifle trained on Grogu and will gun him down if necessary.
Shocked to see she's alive, Din removes his jetpack as the trio all agree to put their weapons down. Before they can say any more (Fett briefly talks about fate intervening to save both him and Fennec, with the latter now outfitted with cybernetics where she was shot - she owes Boba her life), a ship full of Imperial Stormtroopers land on the planet.
A massive gunfight follows, though Din is knocked out after trying to break through that Force barrier surrounding Grogu. As Fennec fends off the troopers, Fett makes his way into the Razor Crest and emerges with his armour once again. Showing why he was once one of the best bounty hunters in the Galaxy, he makes short work of those Stormtroopers and the trio eventually drive them from the planet...only for Fett to blast both their ships from the sky. While all this is happening, The Child finishes communicating through the Force and passes out; someone out there must now know of his existence. It looks like the day is won, but it's then that a missile from the sky falls to the surface and obliterates the Razor Crest. It's gone. Moff Gideon is aboard his Arquitens-class command cruiser, and dispatches four Dark Troopers to retrieve The Child. They do so with ease - without his jetpack, Din can't get there in time - and take to the skies with Grogu in hand. They're 100% droid, and not a hybrid as some fans theorised.
After Din learns that Fett's father, Jango, was a foundling, he agrees that Boba's armour is rightfully his. He and Fennec, meanwhile, vow to help him retrieve The Child as they previously agreed to protect him in return for that armour (this version of Fett isn't the villain from the original trilogy; he's the complex anti-hero from The Clone Wars). Aboard Slave I, they head to Nevarro where Din catches up with Cara Dune. She's working for the New Republic now, but because she cares for The Child, is willing to give him the information he needs to break out ex-Imperial sharpshooter Mayfeld; Din needs him to get the Force-sensitive being back, a surprise given how things ended between them in season one's "The Prisoner." Back on Gideon's ship, the villain walks into Grogu's prison cell to see him using the Force to throw around some Stormtroopers. Of course, he eventually tires, and it's then the villain taunts him with the Darksaber before having him stunned and put in shackles.
He wants his second in command to reach out to cloner Dr. Pershing to let him know they have their "donor." Something tells us Grogu's blood is about to be used to try and bring back Emperor Palpatine...
