During this year's Star Wars Celebration, we learned that The Mandalorian season 3 isn't expected to premiere on Disney+ until next February. Even with some disappointing low-res leaks from that event, we haven't seen any officially released footage from the series.
However, before getting to lay eyes on a single frame from that third batch of episodes, we now have a possible update on Lucasfilm's season 4 plans. In the latest issue of Production Weekly (via SFFGazette.com), it's revealed that cameras on the Disney+ series are expected to begin rolling as soon as next month.
This actually makes sense because it was around this time last year that work on The Mandalorian's third season began. Kicking off in September, it continued through March, with reshoots taking place near the end of that period. Of course, this may lead you to wonder why the show's third season won't be air this side of the Holidays.
Well, it's a busy few months on Disney+, and with Andor set to run right through to the end of November, it doesn't make any sense to have The Mandalorian follow immediately afterwards.
After all, the streamer will want to promote the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story spinoff, keeping all eyes on Cassian Andor's journey rather than hyping Din Djarin's (especially as it doesn't feel like there's a huge amount of excitement for the show right now).
There's a good chance we'll get season 4 a little sooner, but it's hard to say. Ahsoka, Skeleton Crew, and The Acolyte are all coming our way in 2023, and with all those Marvel Studios TV shows (She-Hulk: Attorney at Law has already been moved to Thursdays to avoid clashing with Andor), there's only so much room each week!
Either way, it's great that Lucasfilm is planning ahead with this series, and a strong indication that The Mandalorian will stick around. That's an exciting prospect, especially if it means we can look forward to a whole lot more Grogu over the next few years.
