Will STAR WARS JEDI's Cal Kestis Ever Appear In THE MANDALORIAN? Showrunner Jon Favreau Weighs In

With Star Wars Jedi: Survivor on the horizon, there's renewed interest in Cal Kestis making his live-action debut. If new comments from showrunner Jon Favreau are any indication, that isn't off the table!

Released in 2019, the Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order video game quickly became a hit with fans. Set five years after the events of Revenge of the Sith, it followed Jedi Cal Kestis, a Padawan who managed to escape the purge of Order 66.

Along the way, Cal encountered Sith Inquisitors and even Darth Vader, while a sequel - Jedi: Survivor - is set to arrive in stores on April 28. Fans remain anxious to see Cameron Monaghan play the character in live-action, and The Mandalorian showrunner Jon Favreau has now revealed whether Cal could eventually become part of the Disney+ series.

"Well, we did have our little robot in there," Favreau tells Entertainment Weekly (via SFFGazette.com), referring to the BD unit owned by Peli Motto (which isn't Cal's companion, BD-1). "We really appreciate all the good Star Wars stories that are being told across multimedia."

"I think one of the things I'm most proud of about what we're able to accomplish with this show is to pull in different sets of characters and storylines, and each generation and each group connects with a different aspect of Star Wars."

"[We have] prequel sequels, The Clone Wars, and even expanded universe aspects that we could all pull into our show, so that there's something for everybody, no matter what you connect with," Favreau teased. "With Star Wars, this is a place where all the Star Wars fans are welcome, and hopefully they're enjoying the show."

So, he's not confirming or denying anything!

It's worth noting that there is something of a conflict in terms of the timeline here as The Mandalorian takes place after Return of the Jedi. Cal's fate throughout the original trilogy has yet to be revealed, and the character would need to be aged up for any sort of cameo appearance in the Disney+ series.

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy also recently weighed in on Cal's potential live-action future. Find her comments here.

You run into major issues when you have characters like Ahsoka and Cal (and Grogu for thar matter) survive past Return of the Jedi, and make no appearance in the sequel trilogy either.

I get that Ahsoka is focused on Thrawn and Cal is just trying to survive lol. But both of these characters are heroes and never turned down an offer to help fight the dark side/Empire. So having them missing is conspicuous by their absence.

I hope Cals story wraps up as a trilogy. And I hope the Ahsoka show has a finite end to her story. You just can't have these major characters live on in perpetuity and not be involved in the main events

@Vigor - I just throw it on the galaxy being a big place. I know it's a weak argument, but it works for me.

I do hope each of those characters get their endings, but I wouldn't mind it if they showed up as part of the New Jedi Order in 50 ABY. A Jedi Council with Rey, Finn, Grogu, Cal, Ahsoka, Gungi and Karr Nuq Sin could be fun

@bkmeijer1 - Yeah, you lost me at Rey & Finn on the Jedi Council.

@Tasmaniac - well, it's better than Rey being the sole master in the New Jedi Order. It's gonna be either that, or a Jedi Council with them.

@bkmeijer1 - that could be a LOT of fun to see

@Vigor - I don't know a whole lot about Ahsoka, but this is definitely the case with Cal.

And of course we don't know how his story will play out yet in the games. But as far as we know he was trying to rebuild the Jedi Order in the first game. So that's his entire goal.

So now we've got Cal trying to rebuild the order before the Original Trilogy. We've got Luke trying to rebuild the Order after RotJ, which obviously fails. And rumors of Rey also trying to rebuild the Order, after the sequels.

It all feels like too much. All 3 of these people are trying to rebuild the order? Cal obviously fails because there's no Jedi Order in any of the movies after the prequels. Luke failed in fantastic fashion. So I guess Rey will succeed? The one that people are the least invested in?

At any rate, Cal must die in his story. Probably not in the new one coming out, but maybe in the 3rd one. Because it doesn't make any sense for him to survive but just give up rebuilding the Order.

“Why not? We had Jack Black and [frick]in Lizzo.”

It'd be cool to see Cal jump across to live action in some capacity, but based on the timeline if they had him show up in The Mandalorian they'd have to age Cameron Monaghan up by like 20 years.

Pretty sure he's in his mid-late 20s irl, Jedi: Survivor is set approx 10 years after Ep III meaning in universe it's roughly 8-BBY. The first season of The Mandalorian is set in roughly 9-ABY, and it's possible that Season 3 takes place 2-5 years after that putting it somewhere between 11- and 14-ABY making a roughly 20-23 year difference.

I'd like to think Cal survived the events of the OT because he's a cool character, but between him, Ahsoka, Ezra and whatever other Jedi I'm forgetting that we know survived past the end of the Empire, I feel like it does kinda lessen the impact of Luke's journey throughout the OT where Yoda declares him "the last of the Jedi" and it's on him to rebuild the Order. Having said that I guess one of Luke's first steps towards rebuilding could've been seeking out these other surviving Jedi to create his own council, that'd be pretty cool.
