You read that right. Hugh Jackman is about to gear up for his Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots movie. Production Weekly just Tweeted that filming on Shawn Levy’s Real Steel will kick off in June in Michigan.

Jackman can actually tuck in the Wolverine blades and bulk down because this role, which won't require much physical training at all. He's set to play an ex-boxer named Charlie. His retirement is probably nothing unusual because Charlie lives in a future world where boxing is considered too dangerous for humans and left to one-ton robots. Charlie finds a rickety old bot and decides to make him (or her?) a champion. The raw human emotion comes in the form of an 11-year-old boy who turns up that happens to be Charlie’s son.

Minus the images of Jackman sweating over a plastic, childhood game, the concept has potential. The thing that keeps most from taking the project seriously is that tacky title. I’d like to bet that changes before the film’s November 18th, 2011 release date. With Steven Speilberg executive producing alongside Robert Zemeckis, it’s hard to imagine Real Steel being a real loser.

How could this possibly be turned into a decent movie? That plot sounds stupid enough. And how is that title gonna allow anyone to take the film seriously?

I agree Poni@ but I don't want to waste any
bullets on them! I say we pile their crappy
scripts on top of them and light them on fire!

I really hate Hollyweerd! Just suits with no
creativity at all hiring the cheapest hacks
they can find to write scripts and then getting
guys like Rat-turd to direct them!
Paint by numbers movie-making!

A Rock-'Em Sock-'Em Robots movie sounds like something Neil Patrick Harris would see when he's on 'shrooms.

Lmao it's not rock em' sock em' robots. It's based on a short story by richard matheson (I Am Legend) and a twilight zone episode. Silly goose.

Giant fighting robots controlled by Wolverine? Sounds like live action Anime to me. I don't think this is Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots, it's called Real Steal, right?

@ breasticles

i hope your right, i was looking up richard matheson and couldn't find anything with the name Real Steel, but a lot of his books were renamed when made into movies/shows. but this guy has written a LOT of good books/stories! do you have a link or anything to point me to? i would love to see that this is based off of one of his novels and not a board game.

if you're right, i'm just wondering where the information lines got crossed that accuse this movie of being based on Rock 'em Sock'em Robots.

This sounds good unless it is really based off Rock'em. Hey this reminds me of a movie I liked as a kid, it took place in the future where humans were to weak to fight in boxing matches so only aliens could compete successfully. But they also used a beam that would handicap the fighters to make them more even. I forget the name of the movie though.
