"Castlevania" Gets A Director

"Castlevania" Gets A Director

James Wan, the director/co-writer/co-producer on the first Saw and solo director on Dead Silence and Death Sentence will direct the video game adaptation..

Paul W.S. Anderson ("Resident Evil" and it's sequels) was originally going to write and direct the film adaptation. Then the writer's strike happened. Anderson dumped directing duties to work on "Death Race." Sylvain White ("Stomp The Yard") was brought in to direct.

That all went out the window too! But now James Wan has stepped in to save the movie from languishing in development Hell any longer..

"I'm very fresh on this project. so its early stages and I'm still trying to work things out, but the producers love my vision for it," James Wan tells Bloody-Disgusting in an exclusive chat. "I'll be working on the script with a writer to give it a new spin, different to the previous versions. This will have my stamp on it which Konami is very excited about.

"The thing I love about what Konami did with Castlevania, was taking the iconic Dracula mythology and Eastern-European setting, and retelling it with a Japanese pop-cultural sensibility," he continues. "That’s the East-meets-West tone I want to visually expand on for the film. I’m thrilled by the opportunity to make a highly stylized, fantasy action film that focuses on the gothic storyline and the cool anime-like characters. For once, the human hero is as sexy and dangerous as the vampire villain, and his weapon of choice was what attracted me to the project in the first place – The Vampire Killer Whip.”

Shaman will be pleased! Here's a cool production art still from the movie too...

The sheer fact that this movie is based on a video game has already spelled it's doom. It will suck as every other movie made from a video game has.

Silent Hill, Hitman and MK 1 are the best adaptation's of video games, so it has been proven it can be done and the horror based games always seem to do good no matter how badly they are adapted, the RE movie franchise is a good example of this.

So I think if they go the horror/action route then this will turn out well.

@ ror

aw come on man, the original mortal kombat felt like you were watching the game. it had really good fights (scorpion vs johnny cage was awesome!) and silent hill followed the game pretty well, and captured the feel, which is really all you can hope for with game movies. then again, if you aren't a fan of a certain game, then the movie probably isn't gonna be something you would like. the silent hill games were awful, but good premise! thats why there's like a hundred of them

oh and to add to what I said before Horror movie based game movies do good unless Uwe Boll makes it.... ala Blood Rayne.

Either Double Dragon Which is somewhat watchable, or the Really GOD AWEFUL ALONE IN THE DARK!

Blood Rayne was the worst movie i've ever seen in my life...for real....no exaggeration. what a pile of shiz!

I know what you mean about them being close to the game they are adapted from, but is that really enough for you? Mortal Kombat had good fights and the characters were pretty spot on and all, but not one member of the cast could act! The script was also abysmal. Its not enough for me just to have the movie resemble the game, whats the point in making the movie if thats all they are going to do?

Silent Hill wasn't a complete failure, at least Radha Mitchel pulled out a decent performance. Hitman was one of the wort movies i have ever seen, whether it was a good game adaptation or not i don't give a shit. Brutally bad film.

No, but thats a good one too. It's Super Mario Bros.

CorndogBurglar - 7/23/2009, 11:31 AM
@ ror agreed, i'd rather have someone jam pungie sticks under my fingernails for 2 hours than watch Hitman. it actually hurt to watch that. and yeah, the acting in MK wasn't good, except shang tsung...you know the token asian in every movie from the 90's?? but you have to remember, when i saw that movie in theatres, i was like 12, and LOVED the video game. (like most people) so its probably more a nostalgia thing for me.

Awful movies. You give some people a few cgi zombies and some explosions and they are happy. No tension, no actual "horror". Bollocks.

This will be better!

how bout the fact that the movies follow a character that wasn't even in any of the games...and oh yeah, give her psychic powers while your at it...lol. chris and leon weren't even in any of them, what a joke. that's like making a JLA movie with no batman, superman, or wonderwoman. or an avengers movie with no captain america, iron man, or thor. terrible

The Resident movies are only good if they aren't compared to the games in any way or form.. the action is good but the horror element sucks..

@CorndogBurglar@ anything Uwe Boll makes is a piece of shit not just BloodRayne, I think It's funny now that everyone knows he is a hack he gets laughed at when he tries to buy rights to properties.... David Jaffe laughed in his face when he asked if he could do God of War
