I gotta say after writing this article, this maybe one of my best articles ever here. Let's begin. Anyone who has played, Batman: Arkham City saw the epic ending with the death of the Joker. They saw how Joker died and in the Joker’s final moments Batman even said “Even after everything you’ve done, I would have saved you.” Now I’ve been on countless Batman sites listening, debating, and hearing ideas on how the Joker is not dead and how he could come back. People have said, “it wasn’t Joker that died it was Clayface Joker and Batman carried out Clayface.” People said, “Joker could come back with the Lazarus Pit.” I believe the Joker died. I’m here to tell that there is only and only one way the Joker could come back and by back I mean physically because people says he could be in like a Scarecrow nightmare Scarecrow gives Batman. There is only one man who can bring Joker back and that one man is Lex Luthor. Now before you wonder how could Luthor bring back the Joker, let’s start at the beginning.

Let’s start with the Batman & Mr. Freeze fight. Batman and Mr. Freeze were fighting. Freeze made two cures but destroyed one because he learned Joker had Nora which led to a disagreement with Freeze and Batman. During their fight, Harley snuck in and stole the one cure. While Harley was going to Joker she was taking down by Talia and Talia got the cure. Joker still went on with his plan and Joker looked like he was in perfect health and took the cure. After defeating and looking like he was about to kill Batman, Talia comes in promising Joker a dip in the Lazarus Pit. Joker and Talia leave, leaving Batman to die but he is saved by Catwoman. After Catwoman saves Batman, Hugo Strange’s plan, Protocol 10, begins. Let’s fast forward. We see Joker take Talia Al Ghul to the Monarch Theater. We see Joker demand Batman for the Titan cure. Joker is already in perfect health and looks like he got the cure. Talia gets out and takes Joker’s sword and stabs him with it looking like the Joker is dead. Talia gives Batman the cure and after this Batman thinks for a moment and he realizes this wasn’t the real Joker and the real Joker shoots and kills Talia. After this we learn that Clayface went into Arkham City and portrayed Joker. Next we have a fight with Clayface and Batman. Fast forwarded to the ending and we see the Joker is dead and Batman leaves the body on a police car as Batman walks past Gordon.

Now in the canon comic series Batman Arkham City: End Game, it describes what happens after the events after Arkham City. Now after Batman leaves the Joker’s body, every cop went to look at the body to see if it’s really Joker. Gordon orders after cop away from the Joker’s body. Gordon says he couldn’t trust anyone with the Joker’s body because if any foolish cop did something with the Joker’s body it could hurt the police department or turn the Joker into a martyr. Gordon told his wife to leave Gotham for a while and stay at her sister’s place until it blows over. For weeks Gordon moved the Joker’s body from place to place outside of Gotham. Gordon would perform an autopsy during his time moving the Joker’s body around to make sure this is the Joker and he is really dead. After a while Gordon and Batman met and decided to burn the Joker’s body and they did.

Now how could Lex Luthor bring the Joker back? What could Lex have that others don’t? Well let’s think for a second. First off the Joker is dead. Batman brought out the real Joker, not Clayface Joker. With Gordon doing the Joker’s autopsy there is no way he wouldn’t figure out its Clayface Joker since Clayface has no bones and Joker did. Second, the Lazarus Pit can’t even bring back the Joker. First, there is no way Ra’s would let someone use one of his Pits to bring back the man who killed his daughter. Second, Harley isn’t smart enough to locate a Lazarus Pit. Joker can’t be saved by the Lazarus Pit because you need a body to bring someone back. The Joker is reduced to ashes as Gordon and Batman burned his body. During the DLC Harley Quinn’s Revenge, we see an easter egg that could bring Joker back. The easter egg is a poster for Cadmus Labs.

Now in the comics, Cadmus is a government funded program so I’m not going by the comics. I’m not going by the comics because there is no way the government would bring the Joker back. This Arkhamverse seems like it could most likely fit in with the DCAU since Dini was a writer for the story, many of the voices from the animated series is the voice in the game, and many episodes from the animated series is mentioned. Also in the game we hear Talia and Strange mention Metropolis and Strange mention Keystone City which are the Cities for Superman and Flash.

Now I’m going to go by the DCAU Cadmus. In the DCAU, Cadmus was a government project designed to take precautions if the Justice League is the League went rogue. Cadmus started in the Superman: The Animated Series when Superman was brainwashed by Darkseid into invading Earth. Cadmus in the DCAU was created by the one and only Lex Luthor and General Nathaniel Hardcastle. Members of Cadmus included Amanda Waller, Professor Hamilton, Tala, General Wade, Eiling, Professor Milo, Maxwell Lord, Doctor Moon, and HUGO STRANGE. Luthor financed the project Cadmus. BUT WAIT!!! THAT’S NOT THE ONLY TIME LUTHOR WAS A PART OF CADMUS!!! In the animated series Young Justice, Luthor was on the Cadmus’ Board of Directors. Also in the TV show Smallville, there was a company called “Cadmus Labs” which was brought by the one and only Lex Luthor. This Cadmus was used by Luthor in a larger plan he had.

Why would Luthor bring back Joker? Truth is I have no idea but it is possible he could. Cadmus is known for cloning. The Joker said in Arkham City he shipped out his blood to every hospital in Gotham. It’s not entirely impossible for Lex to get his hands on the Joker blood to clone him. At the same time, why would Lex bring back Joker? Maybe the Joker had a plan that if anything happens for Lex to clone him. Luthor and the Joker have always teamed up together at times. They both have a mutual respect for each other. The fact that these small eggs; a mention of Cadmus labs, Joker’s blood everywhere and Metropolis in the game shows how if Lex was to bring the Joker back it isn’t impossible but I just can’t figure out a M.O to why Luthor would bring back the Joker but what I can tell you is that Luthor is the only person who can bring the Joker back from the dead and even if Lex brought the Joker back, it wouldn’t be the same Joker since it would be a clone. What if he combines Joker's DNA and Batman's DNA? If you recall in Justice League: Unlimited in the episode called "Epilogue" we learn Amanda Waller used Cadmus to make a future Batman. She said how she used Bruce's DNA and put it in Terry's father so Terry's dad DNA could match Bruce Wayne's. Waller says, "Bruce leaves his DNA all over the city." It's not like it would be hard to get if she said that. That could be the ultimate screw you to Batman. Having kind of like a clone son of Batman and Joker's DNA kind of like how Superboy has both Luthor's DNA and Superman's DNA. What are your thoughts and feeling about this? Do you agree that Luthor is the only one who can bring Joker back or disagree? Thanks for your time. Peace.

Fantastic read. You definitely did your research here. We need more editorials like this.

Good article and congrats for your progress! Like yoss said, in this Universe, if you want to bring Joker back, you will bring him back, clone him, make Clayface take his place. I hope we se Mark back as the Joker tough.
By the way, thanks for mentioning my idea about the Scarcrow - Joker - Nightmare thing.

possible M.O. for Luthor: if they did/do a Justice LEague game and made Luthor form his own team (The Injustice League or something) he could realize that Joker would be a valuable asset, so he clones him. maybe something goes wrong during the process and he sounds different. maybe he adds in some other DNA (like what he did with Superboy) and give Joker2 some kind of power. just my two cents.

You're right, Bats can't be fooled twice with the same play. I think I'm going to get started on my Silver Age prequel ideas for the next game after reading your article, I have some great ideas about it

Good write up, though I'd recommend a little more grammar and punctuation, but that's just me.

I like the idea. I also like Run;s idea about M.O. Maybe Luthor realizes that Batman is a threat like none other in the League (like in Tower of Babel) and looks to preoccupy him by driving Batman batty (couldn't resist) with the return of the Joker. Arkham 3 could be a huge mystery in a Red Hood esk fashion where Batman can't figure out if what he is seeing is real or not.

I also like the idea of Joker/Batman mixed DNA.

Here's a coinky-dink for ya: What if the easter egg of Harley being pregnant is actually the artificial impregnation induced by implanting Joker's DNA into her?

good theory! i would like it if it were true. maybe arkham 3 is a JL team-up (as rumored) with Luthor bringing in a cloned joker. then Arkham 4 is a batman beyond game with cadmus still being a relevant factor...

I did not know that. I never played HQ'sR, so I neer saw that, just the in-game easter egg showing the positive test.

I think the JL game is set before the events in Arkham Asylum and City. During the Silver Age.

ImNoSuperMan@ maybe the events could bookend the arkham games. or have a modern sequel with flashbacks that are relevant to moving the plot forward?

either way i just want superman as a playable character.

Great article man!
I know this won't happen but since your on the subject of clones what if Lex created not one but many copies of Joker. If Lex was to have a master plan he would want to keep Bats distracted, so why not send him on a wild goose chase around Gotham to catch all these Joker Clones?

Far fetched I know, but cool nonetheless.

@OdinsBeard: Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Like have the JL game set a little after Arkham City, with lots of Silver Age gameplay, giving some more insight into the DCU and the characters therein. It could kinda be played in a Identity Crisis fashion where, in order to solve a current problem the characters are taken back to mysteries from their pasts. This could lead into Arkham 3 I think.

great call LEVITIKUZ! i was just thinking of having the stories sort of cross over. but having to go back and effect(affect?) future events based on current knowledge.. thats where the money is!

im not big on DC comics.(marvelite to the bone!) everything i know of DC is from the 90's animated series(which, luckily, these games are in cannon with those!). i just hopped back on the bandwagon with young justice after skipping much of the JL series and teen titans.

Awesome article. Never considered this.

@yossarian
I know Mark Hamill said he's retiring after Arkham City, but I didn't discover the following until recently and blew my mind:
For the game DC Universe online, a DLC was released called the last laugh (trailer at http://m.youtube.com/index?&desktop_uri=%2F) released June 2012 and Hamill voiced Joker in it. No joke. They even released a featurette where he talks about returning (watch it at http://m.youtube.com/index?&desktop_uri=%2F). From the sound of the featurette, Hamill may be willing to do more as Joker. Let's hope so.

Brilliant deductions
BTW a Joker/ Batman clone is just plain scary. How do you mix the 2 they are so alike in some ways and polar opposites in others?

You have very valid points but the one problem I see is that you said that lex could clone joker by getting his blood, but if he did that joker would still be dying when he came back, so I wouldn't see the point in bringing back
