Fan Confronts David O. Russell About Not Casting Nathan Fillion In Uncharted!

In a video that makes for fairly uncomfortable viewing, a fan confronts the director with the question of why fan favourite Nathan Fillion wasn't cast as the popular video game character...

When it was announced that Mark Wahlberg would play Nathan Drake in the planned movie of the hit video games, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, fans were not happy. The fact that he is pretty much nothing like the popular hero as well as the news that O. Russell has a lot of new (read: ignoring the source material) ideas, makes this a very unpopular adaptation with fans. With rumours of the film having circulated for years, those same fans became very attached to the idea of Nathan Fillion playing the character. A damn good choice. Well, here's what the director had to say to that when he was put on the spot by a fairly disgruntled fan.

I'm with this guy 100%! Still, it sounds like the director did at least see an audition tape and decided just not to go with him for his take on an adaptation of the series. If this was going to be a movie faithful to the games, it's obvious that Fillion is the best pick for the role, but as mentioned above, it seems that O. Russell has his own ideas.

It's still way too early to make any sort of judgements about this movie, but I'm not a fan of anything I've heard about it so far. We can however be grateful that the third game in the series, Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, is set to be released on November 1, 2011! Until then, be sure to share your thoughts on this in the usual place!

Fillion was perfect but Mark Wahlberg and David O. Russel worked well together in The Fighter, a movie that I think should sweep every category its nominated for at the Oscars.

well david o russel is no clown, the guys film is getting oscar buzz and winning awards for a reason, so give it chance people. this is ledger all over again, not saying the movie will be good but give it chance. LOL i cant imagine the reaction people would have had if gyllenhaal or boreanaz got the role of batman since both of them were close but people lets keep a open mind here and obviously people have the right to voice there opinions, i was expecting to see some sort of violent out burst to happen, glad to see the guy made his point and left, thats how it should be

Nothing that can be done about it now unfortunately. The guy is a great filmmaker, and I'm willing to give Wahlberg a chance, but I'm worried about the changes O. Russell is planning on making. Still, I'll put up with that if he stays true to the tone and includes characters like Elena and Sulley.

I wanted to confront Jon Favereau that way for not casting Milla Jovovich for Black Widow.

Other then Bales acting......WHAT could be sooo great about a story following Mickey Ward???? Boring......Film only got made cause Mark is a Boston guy like Ward. There are tons of boxers better and more deserving of their own film.

Maybe I am coming in from the outside and please no one take this as me being trollish but why do fans of genre movies and shows love Nathan Fillion? This guy was also not cast as Hank Pym or Hal Jordan and somehow that also got some people online upset and I just cannot understand his appeal specifically fans wanting him to get adventure and sci-fi parts.

@ AlReg: He plays roles that fit Fans interpretation of the character. Still I don't feel he is all that. He is a great guy with plenty charisma and a great heart for the stuff but hes not my choice for most of these guys. I do think he would be great for Drake. The fans real appeal in him is he could sit down and have a 2 hour conversation about Green Lantern, Uncharted, Captain America, Avengers or Flash.

fillion does not look like that game character one bit and hes [frick]ing to old for the part to in the game the character was like in his late 20's or early 30 AND MARK LOOKS A LOT CLOSER TO THE CHARACTER AND HAS THE FIT TO THE CHARACTER TO.

Fillion would have been perfect, but Wahlberg is also a great choice. Not as inspired as Fillion would have been but the director just hit one out of the park with Wahlberg in 'The Fighter' and it's not like he's some hack like Stephen Sommers or Joe Carnahan. I trust his opinion on who to cast for his vision of 'Unchartered'. However I may disagree with his vision in the first place, and it appears many other fans may as well. But Wahlberg can do humour and action, he (and Lou Diamond) were great in 'The Big Hit'. It's not the best choice, but it's not a bad choice at all, not in the slightest. It won't be a bad version of the right vision, it will be a good version of a different vision. Maybe? Maybe not.

@rich Better yet, they need to cast J. K. Simmons as Sulley. He's PERFECT for that role, perhaps even more so than he was for Jameson in the Spiderman movies.

Not pulling from the source yet again for a video game adapt.... when will they realize that its better to pull right from the source instead of making up your own crap? Look at cbms they are doing great, why? Because they pull from source, get a clue ppl you need to please the fans just as much as the non and even the non fans prefer when you pull from the source because then they don't have to listen to their friends who are fans b***h about it for a year.

Honestly, both Fillion and Wahlberg are too old to play Nathan Drake, but Wahlberg can pass for a bit younger. He's more the action star type and is more familiar with general audiences so they likely wanted to attach a bigger name to the movie.

@bleedthefreak: Yeah, I saw The Fighter on saturday and it was sooo frakin good! The movie was incredible. The entire cast has been nominated best actor(tress) awards. I hope this film receives a lot of love at the Academy.

Nathan Fillion is by far the best choice for this role. He would be way better than Marky Mark

i have absolutely 0 hope for this movie.

a great game with rare potential for a movie adaptation... completely wasted

the story has nothing to do with the game's story, they changed the characters and got the WRONG actor for nate...

at this point, what does the movie even have to do with the game anymore? the name... that's about it

Nathan Fillion had a lucky escape, and Mark Walhberg should know better after the [frick]ing atrocious Max Payne!
