First Impressions For SUICIDE SQUAD: KILL THE JUSTICE LEAGUE Paint A Post-Launch Uphill Battle For Rocksteady

A round-up of pre-release, early impressions for Rocksteady's Batman: Arkham follow-up Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League reveals game journalists aren't very optimistic.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will be published on February 2, 2024 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.

A while back, a number of gaming journalists and streamers were invited to Burbank, California, prior to the game's release, to spend time playing the game and speaking with devs. Early impression write-ups spinning out of that meet-up haven't exactly painted a rosy picture.

In their early impressions write-up, IGN states: "Unfortunately for Suicide Squad, once the fun story bits end, you’re left with a much less inspired combat system, and an open world that’s filled with tedious tasks."

We'll note that IGN actually had a much more scathing take on the game in a video review on YouTube, that has since been deleted.

Game Informer says their hands on time with the game left them a little more optimistic: "Emerging from my hands-on session, I feel much more confident in Rocksteady's long-awaited follow-up to its critically acclaimed Arkham series, but I still have several questions."

Eurogamer wrote: "It's clear Rocksteady is keen to try something new with Suicide Squad while remaining tied to the studio's past, but as an online shooter with live service elements it's perhaps trend-chasing more than sticking to what the studio does best."

VGC wrote that there's nothing interesting or new being introduced in Suicide Squad: "...as flawed as Crystal Dynamics’ [Avengers] title was, it did at least deliver on the fantasy of playing as your favourite superheroes. After breaking new ground for the superhero genre (just consider how Arkhamesque Spider-Man’s combat is), it’s sad to think that a decade later, Rocksteady is merely following others."

The response to the hands-on, first impressions reviews have been met with surprise within the gaming community. Typically, these types of events are carefully curated, verticle slices of the game that are designed to exhibit the best of what the game has to offer. If Rocksteady thought they were putting their best foot forward and this is the result, it doesn't bode well for the game's long-term success.

Still, Games-as-a-Service titles are notorious for releasing in a shaky state, only to be steadily improved and tweaked by developers until the narrative around the game changes and it becomes viewed as a can't miss experience . Such a scenario occurred with Destiny and Tom Clancy's The Division.

On the other hand, if developers don't respond quick enough, the player base will dwindle and the studio executives will feel it's not worth continuing to fund the game (see Crystal Dynamics Avengers and BioWare's Anthem).

Based on the early impressions, the question now is what group will Kill the Justice League join- the Destiny 2's of the world or the trash heap where Gaas games like Babylon's Fall reside?

So it sucks? That's not good.
I'm very leery about the games eventually being tied into the DCU simply because of the reviews you read above. I know this game isn't tied into the universe yet, but the games will have to be 5-star if they interconnect with the new DCU.

It just feels like Rocksteady initially set out to make another single player, story driven campaign game like their Arkham titles, but then WB’s executives barged-in and said “Nope! We want our own live service game! We want loot boxes! We want season passes! We want Destiny with DC characters!” and the resulting product is a disappointing hybrid of both.

When they first announced the game, I was 100% ready to preorder it. But after seeing how sloppy the gameplay looks/feels, I’m honestly on the fence. I want to see how the story unfolds, but I do not appreciate the greedy, corporate-mandated live service game mechanics that are all over this title.

I’m just getting big Square Enix/Crystal Dynamic’s Avengers game vibes from this, and we all know how that turned out.

The thing is most of the test players had great things to say about it. The original IGN review definitely seemed like it was a skill issue

@MikeyL - I enjoyed the Closed Beta, it takes some getting used to work of the gameplay elements, but eventually you realise it’s Arkham Combat translated into a shooter. It’s definitely not for everyone, but also nowhere near as bad as people are piling on it. The ‘Live Service’ moniker is a noose around its neck regardless

@CerealKiller1 - I think the issue is most of the combat here is a shoot em up, whereas the Arkham games were high combos and gadgets

@bobevanz - I completely agree with you, I would say that my comment about translating was to say that there’s quite a lot of weird combo similarities they’ve implemented to shooter gameplay, they haven’t shown it off that much to be fair but in the beta it was enjoyable and a bit more than just shooting once you get the hang of it!

CerealKiller1 - 1/14/2024, 3:57 PM
@bobevanz - Just to quantify, I’m a massive Arkham fan and have many misgivings about this upcoming game, so not trying to argue or anything, just giving my two cents for my experience with the game as somebody who has been lukewarm on it for a long time 😊

Nothing that surprises me really. Just like with Avengers and Gotham Knights, I'll play through the story when it's free with PS Plus or Game Pass and then never look at it again

PlayStation/Naughty Dog did right by pulling the plug on the Factions game. Live service games are either free or doa these days, it seems.

A single player Squad game similar to the GoTG game would've been ideal.

MyCoolYoung - 1/14/2024, 5:23 PM
@TheWinkler -I feel that guardians game is overrated but many, but I feel like they should’ve put the factions game with the last of us 2 remaster. Would’ve made sense. I still play the factions on part 1 to this day.

Stop me when I'm telling lies lol Gotham Knights was the same thing, just stick to Single Player. Oh you don't want to? Then don't make a game, remember The Avengers? Another botched idea. Live service games are almost always DOA

Rocksteady took 2 years to make Arkham City but 9 years to make this….
RealTurner
RealTurner - 1/15/2024, 1:46 AM
@Nightwing1015 - And yet Gunn thinks games, movies, and TV are going to line up. Someone needs to quietly tap him on the shoulder and say he'll need to have scripts ready 4+ years ahead of time. Marvel can't even do this with movies and TV. There's a reason the Avengers game was set outside the MCU.
Nightwing1015
Nightwing1015 - 1/15/2024, 10:26 AM
@RealTurner - tbf though, plenty of movies DO take 4 years to make. So why would it be any different throwing games which take 4 years into the mix?
RealTurner
RealTurner - 1/17/2024, 9:08 PM
@Nightwing1015 - The issue is, you can't make them side by side. That's the problem Marvel has been having just with TV. How much trickle down has there really been from the NEW movies to TV stuff? How much TV stuff has managed to get back into the movies? Cap was the second TV series and the movie that follows up on that is next year. Wong in Shang Chi didn't get explained until She Hulk. Wanda took until Strange 2 and Vision is MIA for who knows how much longer; the horrible Strange trailers also made it look like What If and other D+ content would be important, when it absolutely wasn't. Marvels is the first movie to lean heavily on D+ developments (and look where that got them, although not entirely for that reason).

The games will need movie events, scripts, actors locked in before they can start producing something, if they are going to have any impact at all--or be at all consistent.

For example, the current Suicide Squad game was revealed in 2020. Some people say the dev time has been 9 years (!), but for the sake of arugment here let's say 2017; 3 years of dev before it was announced, after which they had trouble hitting the original release date. The main DCEU movie that would have finishing its script and going into production in 2017 is *the first Aquaman*. So that's around the point in time the Sucide Sqaud game, being released next month, would fall if it were based on DCEU. There have been 11 more DC movies since then. The timelines just don't match up.

The comic book genre lends itself perfectly to video games. It's weird we have so few that are actually good.

@DarthOmega - Powers can be tough to translate sometimes, but any best em up style character should be fairly easy to translate. Really hoping the Wolverine and Blade games are good. Those two characters seem fit for a good game. Still shocked we’ve never gotten a Daredevil game. Or a Black Panther one.

@ProfessorWhy - I think it's totally doable. They just need to focus hard on a specific world and Character(s).

This game will definitely get my money for the initial release. I don’t care about other people’s take on anything I’m interested in. If it’s trash then I’ll get to that conclusion for myself.
