Warner Bros. Games has officially announced that a new Mortal Kombat title will hit shelves on September 19, and the first trailer for what promises to be one of the most significant instalments in the classic fighting game franchise yet is now online.

Mortal Kombat 1 will introduce a reborn Mortal Kombat Universe created by the Fire God Liu Kang (Raiden appears to be human now), featuring reimagined versions of iconic characters as they’ve never been seen before.

Kang gives the heroes and villains an opportunity to stop fighting and live in peace. These guys consider it for about 3 seconds... and then choose violence!

Check out the trailer - which features some sickening new fatalities - below.

NetherRealm’s genre-defining Story Mode returns with an immersive cinematic narrative featuring unexpected twists on classic rivalries and original backstories for a wide-ranging cast of legendary fighters, including Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Kung Lao, Kitana, Mileena, Shang Tsung, Johnny Cage, and many others. Mortal Kombat 1 will also introduce Kameo Fighters, a unique roster of partner characters that can assist during matches, creating expanded gameplay possibilities for players.

“With Mortal Kombat 1 we are bringing a reimagined universe to the legendary franchise which has captivated gamers for more than 30 years and continues to top itself,” said David Haddad, President, Warner Bros. Games. “The talented team at NetherRealm Studios continues to push the series forward in bold ways that have consistently expanded the global audience, and we believe Mortal Kombat 1 will continue to attract new players as well as thrill our core fans.”

“Mortal Kombat 1 marks a new beginning for the franchise and we couldn’t be more excited to share this original storyline and fresh take on classic characters with our fans,” added Ed Boon, Chief Creative Officer, NetherRealm Studios and Co-Creator of Mortal Kombat. “We’re also introducing our Kameo Fighter system which brings a unique roster of partner characters into the mix, and we are looking forward to showing this feature as well as more new elements of the game very soon.”

Starting tomorrow, May 19, Mortal Kombat 1 will be available for pre-order on all launch platforms.

Looks good. I always wished they went back to use live action people. It used to freak me out as a kid. With the tech they have now could be so cool.

@micvalpro -

It blew my mind when I played the original one at my cousin's as a kid.

Definitely thought it was the future of gaming using Live Action People

@micvalpro - I think photographed models are only used for indiegames now. Maybe for an MK spin-off with a lower budget and less risk invovled?

@micvalpro - Sadly that wouldn’t be viable anymore. Fighting games are so reliant on frames that it would mess up the gameplay but it would be a really cool mode to add as a bonus thing

Anyone remember Mortal Monday? I had a Super Nintendo and I purchased a Sega Megadrive just so I could play it with blood in it.

@marvel72 - Dude, I was counting down the days to Mortal Monday as a kid! All my comics were filled with advertisements for it too.

MORTAL KOMBAT!!!!

I already had a Genesis instead of a Super Nintendo, so I was ready with the blood code from day one. ABACABB

@marvel72 - Yes, this is actually coming out on its 30th anniversary.

I had the Genesis version, and I had a friend who had an SNES, and for that period of times, I gloated about how my game had blood and fatalities, and his game didnt...of course, then MK2 came out, and he had the blood, plus the better graphics, plus the better sound

@CorndogBurglar -

I played Street Fighter 2 to death and it was a great alternative.

I got very excited for the release, great times.

@marvel72 - Yeah, I grew up in the heyday of fighting games. I love both Street Fighter and MK. And I'm over the moon that SF6 and MK1 are both coming out this year.

I'm upgrading my fightstick as we speak :)

Ah yes, the comic book movie Mortal Kombat.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 5/18/2023, 2:45 PM
@ClintThaHamster - There have been Mortal Kombat comics. Even back during the original arcade. And there are also Mortal Kombat movies. Why is it shocking they would have news about a new Mortal Kombat game here?
Colton
Colton - 5/18/2023, 2:53 PM
@ClintThaHamster - why isn't it on gamefraggers? Cos there's no cbm Hollywood drama bs or James Gunn nonsense to write about at the minute.

@MarkCassidy - Point still stands as to why its here all the same
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 5/18/2023, 3:07 PM
@Colton - No, the point doesn't stand. You've been here long enough to know that Galactus himselfnhas said many times that they will post all kinds of things here if they think users will find it interesting. Whether it's movie related or not.

There's seriously no reason for people to complain. Just don't click on non-movie articles if you aren't interested. It's really that easy.
Clintthahamster
Clintthahamster - 5/18/2023, 3:10 PM
@CorndogBurglar - Maybe I've misunderstood the meaning of "Comic book movie," which I assumed would refer to "movies that are based on comic books," rather than "anything that's ever been remotely related to a comic book and/or a movie."

So, should a movie about the life of JPII be covered on this site? What about the new Cheap Trick record? Developments at the Obama Presidential Library?
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 5/18/2023, 3:18 PM
@ClintThaHamster - If those things were interesting to the people that visit this site and comment in articles, then yeah. The name of the site may be Comic Book Movie, but it's a pop culture site first and foremost. Always has been. The owner if the site has even explained that.

@ClintThaHamster - mortal komabt was comic book series I see your point in end I’m not bothered by it
Clintthahamster
Clintthahamster - 5/18/2023, 4:25 PM
@dragon316 - Yeah, I know it was a comic book series at some point, but it wasn't a comic book series FIRST, but that's my hang up. And lord knows, I love all the Star Wars news on here, so who am I to complain?
KaptainKhaos
KaptainKhaos - 5/18/2023, 4:27 PM
@ClintThaHamster - they did make MK Comics
Clintthahamster
Clintthahamster - 5/18/2023, 5:22 PM
@KaptainKhaos - @KaptainKhaos - Again, I know this, but Mortal Kombat is not based on a comic. That Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark were adapted as comics doesn't make them comic book movies. I wouldn't expect to see Nintendo game news here, just because there have been Super Mario comics and movies.

But, clearly, I thought this website had a different raison d'etre than it has. The "about" page clearly says "In 2008, CBM expanded its coverage to include all SciFi,Fantasy and Horror related properties." Mea culpa.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - Maybe they are going to follow the Call of Duty formula. 1 remake this year, then a sequel the following year, and keep on rotating.

Seems like people are more excited for remakes rather than sequels now.....kinda weird in my opinion.
