TOMB RAIDER Sequel Scrapped After MGM Loses Franchise Rights; Reboot With New Star Officially In The Works

MGM waited too long to move forward with the Tomb Raider sequel starring Alicia Vikander, and a reboot is now officially in the works with a new Lara Croft. Find more details on that after the jump...

The Wrap (via ActionNewz.com) reveals that MGM has lost the right to the Tomb Raider franchise. Based on the hit video game series of the same name, Lara Croft was brought back to the big screen in 2018 with a reboot starring Alicia Vikanda. However, the studio only had until May of this year to get cameras rolling on a sequel, and that moment has obviously passed.

Now, Hollywood movie studios have now embarked on something of a bidding war for the IP.

The trade confirms that Vikanda is no longer attached to the property as this next iteration will be a total reboot. No actor or director is attached at this stage, but the rights have reverted to video game publisher Crystal Dynamics and they're looking to find a new home for the movie franchise alongside Graham King's GK Films.

2018's Tomb Raider earned $275 million at the worldwide box office, but was met with mediocre reviews. The two movies starring Angelina Jolie were similarly underwhelming, but made a combined total of $432 million.

So, there's success to be found, but clearly not with this current iteration of the franchise. MGM has spent the past few years struggling to make the sequel a reality, with Ben Wheatley (Free Fire) departing the project before Lovecraft Country showrunner Misha Green came on board to write and direct. Both versions didn't come to fruition, so we'll never know what might have been.

Embracer acquired Crystal Dynamics earlier this year for $300 million, and a quarterly report noted that the company sees "great potential, not only in sequels, but also in remakes, remasters, spinoffs as well as transmedia projects" for Tomb Raider.

We'll see what form this Tomb Raider reboot takes, but there's definitely room for a badass female adventurer like this on screen. After all, if Uncharted (a video game franchise that borrowed heavily from this one) can make over $400 million, we don't see why an icon like Lara Croft can't follow suit.

Stay tuned to ActionNewz.com and GameFragger.com for the latest on this new Tomb Raider movie.

The Vikander movie could have been something, but they made bad plot choices (mainly around Lara's family). I actually think the movie climate today is perfect for a serious Lara Croft action movie franchise so whoever wins the rights should move quickly.

Pretty bummed about this. I quite enjoyed Vikander as Lara, so I’ve been waiting for the next chapter for a hot minute.

Yes definitely. Alicia is a great lead. Some of the actions sequences were executed quite well. Some of the supporting cast were great, especially Daniel Wu (who would have been an excellent Namor in every way possible, a really good one too).

Hope to see Alicia Vikander to have an awesome role in the MCU. Maybe... Jean Grey?

I prefer the Jolie movies. The new one was okay but Lara Croft was pretty bland. A tv series would be better. I’ll stick to the games.

You know what, I want to see Angelina Jolie back as Lara. She was perfectly cast.
The first film was pretty decent and the second did kinda fall a bit.
Jolie has gotten better in action roles since so seeing a more older, wisened Lara would be interesting to see.

Or if they are rebooting completely they need to go back to the classic, fun, adventurous and carefree Lara.

When accurate Uncharted movie reboot?

I have not seen Holland's movie yet, maybe it's fine, but that's not Nathan Drake.

Good.

Now being back Angelina Jolie and have her clash with Natla (played by Tricia Helfer) who attempts to raise Atlantis from the sea by using Lara's daughter that is turned against her.
Close out the trilogy!

That’s a shame. I thought the first movie was decent, and I enjoyed Alicia Vikander in the role.

I was looking forward to seeing what Misha Green had planned for Lara in the sequel.

Please base it on Classic Tomb Raider. There's a reason the Crystal Dynamics trilogy quickly lost steam.

@JermareCBM - "Quickly lost steam", seriously? The Crystal Dynamics trilogy sold around 35 million copies in total. All 9 previous Tomb Raider games combined sold around 40 million copies. Like the new trilogy or not, but it was a huge success for the franchise.

I enjoyed Vikander as Lara, and thought the whole thing had potential. Much as I like Dominic West, though, the first movie should've left his role at flashbacks. I was interested in seeing what Wheatley would do with the sequel, but I'm willing to give whatever they're doing next a chance.

Reminds me that I still need to finish Rise one day...

I'm liked the Vikander movie. On the hand it is a good movie, and made some changes that made it work better as a movie. On the other hand it isn't a good video game adaptation though, as it only took the bare minimum from the game.

Do hope the next adaptation does a better job at keeping what works from the game, including the mood, and does something new with it.
