13 years after DC Universe Online first launched on PC and PlayStation 3, the massively multiplayer online role-playing game is still going strong. While we don't have sales numbers right now, the game remains popular enough to at least warrant the release of a native PlayStation 5 version, while developer Dimensional Ink has outlined robust plans for future updates.

Although DC Universe Online has been playable on the PlayStation 5, it was the PS4 version of the game which ran via the console's backwards compatibility feature. The native client for PS5 allows for "more powerful performance improvements and PS5 native features."

According to Dimensional Ink, the PS5 version of DCUO "can better take advantage of the system's hardware for stronger performance, smoother framerates, faster load times, and natively runs at 4k."

An Xbox Series X|S version is "on the way."

In addition to this week's launch of the PS5 client, Dimensional Ink's new lead producer, Kenn "Kendricke" White, also outlined two planned content updates for this year. Episode 47: Brainiac Returns! is set to launch in May, with the untitled Episode 48 coming in September.

Here's the official blurb for Episode 47: Brainiac Returns!:

Brainiac has returned! Seeking to learn from his previous defeats, he's launching an all-out assault on the Earth's ultimate symbols of hope and resistance, the Hall of Justice and the Hall of Doom. With the world hanging in the balance, the Justice League and Lex Luthor's Secret Society are forced to unite their powers and resources to thwart Brainiac's ingeniously malevolent plan.

Coming in April is the next base, the Sunstone Fortress. This new base and base layout is inspired by Superman's Fortress of Solitude and is expected to launch this April in celebration of the Man of Steel's anniversary.

White also confirmed that Episode 48 will launch sooner than expected. The update is in pre-production with an estimated set for September. Unfortunately, White could not go into the details of this update as it's still a work in progress, although he did tease that their goal "is to make it as great as and different from any episode that has come before."

And if all goes well, Episode 49 will launch in the first quarter of 2025.

DC Universe Online is a free-to-play MMO set in the fictional universe of DC Comics. Developed by Dimensional Ink Games and co-published by Daybreak Game Company and WB Games, the game was originally released in 2011 -- in the heyday for MMORPGs -- for PC and PlayStation 3. It came to PS4 in November 2013, Xbox One in 2016, and Nintendo Switch in August 2019. Very few MMOs have had the ability to stand the test of time like DC Universe Online.

Heck yeah, now we can see PS2 quality graphics in 4K...

I played this game for years, but their refusal to make the game cross play (meaning the years and the money I sunk into my characters I couldn't play on any other system and would have to start over on other systems.... No) and the fact they make the dumbest updates and still have basic fundamental bugs they don't bother patching and the graphics look ancient and they still want monthly memberships and have loot box capsules and tons of predatory practices and they straight up don't listen to audience feedback AT ALL....

I gave up on this trash game and will never go back because honestly to play this game at the top levels where you are in a League and are grinding the raids over and over for rare loot to max your character, it's EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE. You need a membership to even use your characters past lvl 90... They will lock them out of everything. It's predatory. You just have to keep paying every month and spending on the new capsules to get the newest gear with the highest current LVLs....

It's a money pit of a game that is actually fun when you have enough money to play it.

@TheVandalore - didn’t they change it so all the episodes are free and that you get more drops from the latest episode?

@TheVandalore - Ok they update it and you don't have to use replay badges just wait until weekly resets for the weeklies and get your dailies done every day. You get geared up pretty quick. Especially on double mark weekends which happen about 3 times the life of a dlc. Loot boxes I haven't bought any stabilizers since the second one yet still have everything. Granted I am legendary and don't have money caps, so it was easy to play the broker. I think they just got rid of the money caps for free players on a recent update so that might be gone now, which I agree would have been a pain if you are free to play player. And you definately don't need a membership to get past level 90 anymore.

@GarthRanzz - that's all well and good, but have they made it cross compatible yet? I spent hundreds of dollars and spent years on my characters on Xbox. But I don't play Xbox anymore. I'm PS5 and PC these days. Are they gonna let me use my account on any system I buy the game for? I'll re buy the game on every system, so long as I can use my old account on all of them. I'm never starting over. That's retarded. Games not THAT good.

@GarthRanzz - plus I have exclusive stuff on my Xbox account they don't even offer anymore like emblems and time exclusive costume items... My bases had exclusive stuff.

I CANT even get all that stuff on a new system, not would I waste my time and money doing it all over a second time for PS5 and a third time for PC.

@TheVandalore - Yeah that part stinks for you. I have been playstation since day 1 so never would have that issue so I agree that stinks for you.

@GarthRanzz - stinks for them more. I know there is a HUGE percentage of former players that will NEVER spend another dime on the game for that very reason.

Yes, finally. Now I can download it on a third console, make an abomination to team up with batman, go nowhere because I refuse to pay, then never touch it until it goes on the next console.

This game is one of the abusive microtransaction factories in gaming history. Too much to type, but not only do you have to pay to replay a mission for marks, you have to pay atleast $900 for the three damage artifacts, $900 for your support role, and ANOTHER $4-500 for your Allie’s (heroes that buff stats) JUST TO COMPETE. If you think I’m lying about anything I just said, do your research. It’s 100% true.

They refuse to invest anything into modernizing it or making gameplay better. And the whole thing runs and plays the same as a mobile phone game.

You really are a massive idiot if you play this game still.

@TheGreenRanger - Why are you paying for Allies?!? Krypto is the best one and he only goes to level 5. You are buying the wrong allies..... Arts, I have my top 5 characters maxed out and didn't spend anywhere near that. I did buy Seals, so I can't say it was free, but I never paid for nth metal. I just stockpiled it on a mule (character I don't play, I just use to store stuff), until we have double artifact xp. However, I just played on my mental alt since my main gripe would be we have gone from 4 to 2 dlcs a year who has 120 arts which are really cheap on the seals, and I was amazed at how I was able to do average damage, so I think people stress about arts way to much. Also you don't have to replay missions. I just do dailies every day and wait for weekly resets.

@GarthRanzz - I can already tell you are a*s cheeks at the game. My comment is regarding the pay scale per artifact without double xp, and just gathering metal on your own will take a fortnight to level up to 200 which is the optimum level per artifact. And if you think krypto is the best ally… dude. You’re sadly mistaken.

GarthRanzz - 3/27/2024, 9:45 PM
@TheGreenRanger - LOL his damage scale has already been proven on youtube...plus he doesnt just stand there like some like teekl. Oraclebot is another good one. But I want to hear your opinion on the best ally. FYI you just missed w double nth metal week and the anniversary reward is a big chunk. I have always just stockpiled the stuff until double xp.
