MORTAL KOMBAT Reboot Gets Simultaneous Theatrical & HBO Max Release Date; First Poster Revealed

Amid rumors that Warner Bros. might be considering sending the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie to HBO Max, it's now been confirmed that the reboot will premiere on the streamer the same day it hits theaters.

Following last week's announcement that Warner Bros. intends to send its entire 2021 movie slate to HBO Max the same day they hit theaters, the studio has pushed the Mortal Kombat reboot back 3 months from January 15, 2021 to April 16, 2021.

Producer Todd Garner took to Twitter to confirm that simultaneous theatrical/HBO Max release, adding that we won't be seeing a trailer until the new year. We do have a first promo poster, however, featuring the official title treatment and a redesigned take on the video game's classic dragon logo.

WB has also moved the live-action Tom and Jerry movie up from March 5, 2021 to February 26, 20201, and removed Lisa Joy's sci-fi drama Reminiscence from its slate altogether. It was previously dated for April 16, 2021.

Mortal Kombat is set to star Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, and Mehcad Brooks as Jackson "Jax" Briggs. Lewis Tan's role has not been revealed, but there's a lot of speculation that he'll be playing Kung Lao.

The video game adaptation was directed by Simon McQuoid and produced by Aquaman helmer James Wan.

So Tom and Jerry drops on my birthday.

Sometimes my birthday movie is Invisible Man or Get Out. Other times it's Gods of Egypt and this crap.

@MUTO123 - mine is May 5th. 2020 was the first year in many years that I didn't get a Marvel movie for my B-Day.

@Manmarvel - Sorry about that. Maybe this year depending on how quickly things get back under control.

@MUTO123 - Mine's Feb 14. Every year, it's usually a rom-com, something with a hard R, usually in the form of a horror movie and/or something that overpromises and under delivers.

@soberchimera - honestly whether they are released on HBOMax or not i wouldnt expect any of the movies to make big mone in theaters, even if the pandemic ends, people arent just going to start going to the movies

@soberchimera - Yeah, there's a pandemic out there, and people aren't going to rush back to the movies overnight. Hell, 50% said they're never going back to theaters.

@soberchimera - Pretty sure it'd be even worse PR if they backpedaled now

@soberchimera -
I was honestly half-expecting this to go straight-to-VOD even before the pandemic. It has one of the most amateurish director/writer duos ever with an equally shitty lineup of producers (excluding James Wan).

Who is expecting this to be genuinely good? It's even from the same producer behind those cheesy MK films from the 1990s.

But why is Lewis Tan in this? Who likes him?

@WakandanQueen - Who likes Jai Courtney or Scott Eastwood? Every couple years Hollywood finds some random actor and tries to make them a thing despite them having no charm, charisma or general talent.

Any word on whether they're still really gonna keep this Rated R?

@Feralwookiee - well they shot for an r rating so unless they are going to cgi the blood out, should still be r rated
