VULTURE:
Speaking of inviting scrutiny: Wonder Woman. Why did you decide to take this on?

DAVID KELLEY:
Well I first said no, for all the obvious reasons. It’s not really what I do; it’s not a genre that’s in my wheelhouse. But then I started thinking about, What if there were such a person in today’s world and what must it be like to be her? And I was imagining the sense of social isolation that she must feel, that she indeed would probably be a rather complicated beast. When I started thinking about all the complications and potential layers to this superhero, I just got more and more intrigued. It was also something I was a little bit afraid of. That’s good, too. Any writer should get out of his or her comfort zone, and this was way outside of mine.

So I took a deep breath and decided to go for it. I did not truthfully commit to doing it until I wrote the script. I was going to try writing it, and if I failed on my own terms, I would say no. If I thought, Yeah, this is something I believe in, then I’d turn it in. And it was something I ultimately did get behind. It was hard, but I had a good time writing it. And Warner Bros. and DC both responded very positively — and off we went.

VULTURE:
Then you had to find your Wonder Woman.

DAVID KELLEY:
It was not an easy search, but it went far quicker than I ever imagined. After writing this script, I remember looking at several people and going, "Yeah, now good luck trying to find her." She’s got to be strong, smart, emotionally accessible — and oh yeah, an Amazon! Good luck. I remember speaking to DC, and saying, "We may have to compromise on the physicality. We need to go with the best actress. And if the best actress is five-foot-five, we have to be open to that, because there’s too many layers for this character to also demand that she be nearly six feet tall." And then lo and behold, in comes this girl named Adrianne Palicki.

I had seen her on Friday Night Lights and I always liked her work, but I didn’t get a sense of her stature. I guess she was sitting down in a lot of the scenes. So she stood up, and we met — eyeball to eyeball — she smiled ... and I knew during the course of the conversation that this was Wonder Woman. I just knew it. I had an instinctive feeling that this was her. So then she read. And she was. And she is.

It sounds like he's not exactly a comic fan, which makes me worry that this show is not going to make it past 6 episodes, and if it does, it won't have the feel of the comics.

This guy seems to care about writing, but not about Wonder Woman. I think he's more intrigued by his version of WW than with the WW of the comics that fans love.

Sad day for CBM fans if you ask me. Oh well.

But who knows. It could rock!

Thers no way this will ever get a second season. Probably will be cancelld after a few episodes. There is virtually no target audience. The biggest inbuilt audience, the comic crowd they already alienated with the distorted basic storyline (succesful business woman??) and on top of that the god-awful costume... Sadly destined for fail.

OK! a few things that CLEARLY show Kelly shouldn't have ever been a part of this show.

"Well I first said no, for all the obvious reasons. It’s not really what I do; it’s not a genre that’s in my wheelhouse."

Yeah no kidding, that's why you made her a corporate executive.

"I remember speaking to DC, and saying, "We may have to compromise on the physicality. We need to go with the best actress. And if the best actress is FIVE FOOT FIVE, we have to be open to that"

Way to compromise the character, would he have considered a 5'5" Superman?

So basically what this tells me is he change wonder woman into something he could handle, sculpted her into a scenario he knew how to write, INSTEAD of writing wonder woman. I can hear the whistle of the bomb dropping already

WOW!!!! After reading the interview between Vulture & Kelley, it makes a whole lot more sense to me now why the costume & actress has WRONG & FAILURE written all over it!!! Notice the 1st thing Kelley says: "Well I first said no, for all the obvious reasons". That shouldve been a sign from God!! He wasnt even meant to do this!! He shouldve followed his instincts & stayed out of this one!! I expect this series to be cancelled after a few episodes!!

@phoe1

Agreed, it's silly to make a show that goes against your built in audience. they should have embraced that audience instead of trying to make the show for middle aged women looking for some self confidence.

If he would have compromised for a 5'5" WW, what else is he wiling to compromise on? That stood out (in a short way) to me. :-P I will approach this show just like No Ordinary Family and The Cape. Hope that it is decent, but not expecting it to be.

I admit that some of the things he said here sound pretty bad.

But who knows? Maybe we will get lucky and it will be a decent translation.

It's hard to say at this point.

@ Juggernaut What do you mean "its hard to say at this point?" Its extremely easy to say at this point!! The costume & actress alone should tell you that! Im telling you, this series will be cancelled after a few episodes!! She may be the best actress in the world, & it still wont save this garbage! NBC needs to save themselves further embarrasment & cancel now before they continue further!

Like she realizes that the actual one is too much, and decides to go for a more seriour route.

I give this about as much hope as the 'Bionic Woman' reboot. That outfit is terrible. Way too bright and gaudy looking and the pants simply MUST go. It looks like a bad Halloween costume. Of all the shows to NOT blatantly sex up...they choose Wonder Woman. Unreal. I have no doubt this will be a critical, commercial and dismal failure. And that's too bad, because I was hoping they'd knock it out of the park.

She also has terrible breast implants. There's like a 14 inch gap in between them and they're hard as rocks at the top! Yet another failure!

Here's the bottom line:Kelley is a superstar TV writer and producer. He knows how to make a long lasting TV show that people want to watch.I'm not a fan of some of his projects(Ally McBeal, Harry's Law, Boston Legal), but I like enough(Picket Fences, The Practice, Chicago Hope, Boston Public). He is a great storyteller.

He is probably the last person that I would have thought of to develop a Wonder Woman show, but he's the guy they chose. We may not get the Wonder Woman show we want, but we may end of getting the Wonder Woman show we need.

Wonder Woman is one of those characters who is popular in name only, while her actual character and comic haven't always been given the best treatment or care. She is a hard character to tackle.

Some people love Kelley's work and some don't, but he does have a knack for creating hit after hit that can go the distance.A few examples are:

Picket Fences - 4 seasons
Chicago Hope - 6 seasons
The Practice - 8 seasons
Ally McBeal - 5 seasons
Boston Public - 4 seasons
Boston Legal - 5 seasons

The guy has been nominated for 19 Emmys and has taken home 7.All but one of his hit shows were continuously nominated for Outstanding drama, so that's nothing to sneeze at.

Look at Smallville. For better or for worse, that show stood the test of time.It was a show that was different from it's source material and it gained a dedicated fanbase.Wonder Woman could accomplish the same feat.Especially because it has more credible people behind it, as well as DC's involvement from early on.

I'm going to give it a shot.

I can't get over how terrible she looks. Bright red lipstick, obviously dyed hair, way too much blush on her cheeks, terrible breast implants, horrible bright coloured latex outfit and PANTS for crying out loud! Bright blue rubber pants!

she looks fine, chill out people. the storyline....well, that's another matter! its hard to see what they're going to do with an "executive" Diana. I'd rather see her in the military like the first series.

Or BETTER YET, she should have been an AMBASSADOR from a little known island with a gajillion to one female/male ratio!

LoganX35 - You call yourself a 'fan', yet anyone who expresses GENUINE concern is a 'hater' - who are you trying to kid?! Granted, the 'bathing suit' costume was a bit much, but a leather variation on the ORIGINAL desgin is more HISTORICALLY accurate:

...after all, she is an AMAZON (ie. 'GREEK') warrior!

As it stands, the new costume design in the comic books made her look like a reject from one of the 'Step Up' films! And this latest modification makes her more stripper than warrior (shiny neon vinyl - you've GOT to be #@$!-ing kidding me!). What's she going to do, pole-dance her enemies into submission?! All she needs is the garter belt to hold the dollar bills...

Can anyone enlighten me please? What's the purpose of this WW outfit? Would she transform or she actually chose to wear it? I don't get it!!

They should have gone with a more modern "Gladiator/Amazon" feel to the outfit or just make it something more Hi-Tech and easier to kick ass…maintaing the original color hues (please see Marvel) And what's up with the cheap plastic looking gold and silver metals? Gosh…terrible outfit… I hope this looks 1000% better on film because right now she looks like a bad over saturated Black Widow!

When I 1st saw the pic a thumbnail size, I liked the costume, it isn’t perfect, but it look like Wonder Woman. However when I clicked the link & saw it at it full scale, all I could see is a petty girl in a Halloween costume she bought online & now it is time for her to “PARTAY!”. I sing in a Goth Rock band, so I’m no stranger to PVC clothing, in fact I’m quite fond of it & truth is this costume wouldn’t look all that out of place on some of the girls I know, at the clubs I go to, but to be worn by the daughter of the Queen of the Amazons, a demigoddess & according the this version a billionaire business woman, well the PVC just looks cheap nasty & the golden parts look like plastic. So imo the design itself is a passable modern take on the Wonder Woman costume, it is just the materials used look tacky. Leather would work if they want to push her warrior side or perhaps silk to show they she is in fact a Princess & most of all the metallic parts, whether armour or jewellery should look as if they’ve been crafted by Hephaestus, not popped out of a mould & spray painted gold in a factory in china, at least some sign of her nobility, a hint at her heritage. I know that no one with the power is listening, but it’s 5am, I can’t sleep because I can’t stop thinking about chemotherapy again on Wednesday & I have nothing else to do.

Popularity does not equal quality. So saying David K has put out shows that have survived 3-6 seasons means nothing.

plenty of crap shows are successful, 2 and a half men anyone? big bang theory?

He's put out decent shows (arguably) in a certain genre, but this is not his field of story telling and it's obvious, and it looks like he's trying to fit this into HIS comfort zone as a writer.
this is show is going to be "quirky" like ally mcbeal, and not bad ass like Wonder woman
