WONDER WOMAN 1984: More Details Revealed About The Decision To Move The Sequel To Christmas Day

Last night, we learned that Wonder Woman 1984 has moved to Christmas Day, and we now have more details on what led to Warner Bros. pulling the plug on that planned October 2nd release. Check it out...

Collider has shared more details on Warner Bros.' decision to move Wonder Woman 1984 from October 2nd to December 25th, a Christmas Day release date which puts it just one week after Dune's debut on December 18th. The site claims that Tenet's disappointing opening weekend wasn't a factor, and that the studio has been considering that new slot for a while now.

The belief is that this holiday frame can quite easily support both blockbusters, similar to how Jumanji: The Next Level and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker occupied the same space last year. Also worth noting is the fact that Aquaman earned over $1 billion when it was released in late December 2018, so the hope is obviously that Wonder Woman 1984 will draw a similarly impressive audience.

Apparently, ever since Warner Bros. released the latest Wonder Woman 1984 trailer during DC FanDome, the sequel has been tracking at the highest levels across all metrics. The issue is that 30% of North American theaters remain closed, but will they have opened their doors by Christmas?

The studio is no doubt hoping that will be the case, but with fears the virus will actually worsen once winter arrives, the opposite could be the case. What we do know is that Tenet now has a good couple of months to earn as much money as possible, and Black Widow's fate currently remains unclear.

How do you feel about this latest release date change?

It's not gonna help. I want to see the movie, but at this point, its not gonna make the money they want it to, Tenent hasnt even.

Just delay all relases indefinitely until this pandemic passes. Whats the point of moving release dates month after month, after month...

@RokoVII - My guess is that maybe studios are contractually obliged to give movies a release date

@bkmeijer - if so just push till mid 2021 and if it changes and are released earlier great :)

At this point I'm surprised there are still movies that aren't pushed to 2021

Here in NY we got the Malls, Gyms, Indoor Bars/Dinning either opening at limited capacity or set to reopen at limited capacity by end of September.

Obviously still no NFL, NHL, College, Live Theatre, Movie Theatre.

Seems Governor Cuomo and the state is wisely inching towards addressing Theatres.

I’m personally in no rush to go back and want to see what the FALL brings with flu season...

...but I wouldn’t say ‘Not Going’ 100%. It would have to be the right setup, situation at the theatre for a consideration to attend.

Keep Black Widow date.

1) I foresee a coming aversion to big budget pics for a year or so. I would not be surprised if we started having MCU releases costing $125M or even less. If they can't cya by going pvod in a crunch I don't think it gets made.

2) Fewer pictures are going to be made. One major problem is insurance. The indies can't pay the higher premiums. And with pictures taking 2-3 times the screens as usual there is no room for normal.

3) Exhibition is screwed.

4) Series work otoh will flourish.

I just don’t see anything released being profitable this year. I’m glad people aren’t as crazy as I thought they were and flocking to the theaters in droves. Nothing feels right, right now. Let this pandemic die down.

In the comics, December 25th is Diana Day (when the Amazons dress up as deer and play sex games involving a being hunted and hung upside down before being stripped and eaten... seriously, look it up), so it's a perfect date for the film to debut.

Also, I know that Patty Jenkins is a big fan of Donner's ofriginal Superman and that debuted December 26th 1978.

However...
We are probably going to be locking down on Christmas day. In order to maximise the economical advantage of the Christmas Shopping period, we will wait until the last minute and then lock down when everyone hunkers down for holiday period.

C'mon, WB, what lessons have you learned from Tenet?
Answer: People aren't willing to go to the movies right now!

Also, why would WB sink Dune by putting it one week ahead of WW84?
None of these dates are sticking.

@Battabing

It’s not that people aren’t willing to go to the movies. It’s that only 65% of theaters are opened at 35-45% capacity.

@regularmovieguy - Sorry but it's both. Two hours in a mask kills the enjoyment for too many of us, enough to cripple exhibition at this time. YMMV.

@JDL

“Two hours in a mask kills the enjoyment for too many of us”

Honestly I didn’t think masks were all that painful
JDL
JDL - 9/12/2020, 5:31 PM
@regularmovieguy - Painful ? Nah. But for me very uncomfortable within 10 minutes as heat and moisture build up. Obviously this is not the same for everyone. But if 30-40% of your target really don't like it you've got a problem.

"The issue is that 30% of North American theaters remain closed, but will they have opened their doors by Christmas?"

The answer is No..not safely. Whereas other countries have open cinemas, but WB are ignoring that.

We could sure use her lasso of truth right now. When the economy crashes and most are helpless to even feed ourselves and it's all blamed on covid rather than the politicians which actually caused it (to happen sooner than it would have), people will allow the string-pullers to further their monetary and political agendas, and most still won't believe me. Please, wake up, world. Demand control of yourselves. Be not slaves to the whims of the stupid, fearful masses.
1984 arrived in 2020.
