Anticipation surrounding Wonder Woman 2 is already high following the commercial and critical success of the first film, and now fans have another reason to get excited. During a recent IMAX earnings call, just now starting to make the rounds on the internet, it was revealed that director Patty Jenkins will be shooting a portion of the upcoming sequel with IMAX cameras.
IMAX exec Greg Foster revealed:
“I’m excited to announce that Wonder Woman 2, which comes out in the second half of 2019, will be shot with IMAX film cameras in select sequences. This Warner Brothers DC production, the sequel of the global juggernaut from 2017, is directed by Patti Jenkins and produced by Chuck Roven and Rebecca Oakley Roven. And we couldn’t be more excited that IMAX has been chosen to be a part of the film’s design.”
Although Wonder Woman was released in IMAX 3D format, it wasn't actually filmed in IMAX. Stretching the film to IMAX format rather than actually shooting with IMAX cameras is a common, more cost effective technique used by studios; however, it results in lesser picture and sound quality. Granted, it still looks amazing to see your favorite superheroes on the expansive screen, but filming directly with IMAX cameras will surely be a step up.
Although parts of Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises films were shot in IMAX, fans will get an even better idea with Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War (due out April 27), as that is the first movie to be shot entirely with IMAX cameras.
Wonder Woman 2 opens in theaters November 1, 2019.
