Earlier this year, Gal Gadot surprised us all by revealing that, as far as she knew, James Gunn and Peter Safran were planning to develop a third Wonder Woman movie, with her back in the lead role as the iconic Amazon warrior.
"I had a meeting with (DC Studios CEOs) Peter Safran and James Gunn, and they both told me that they're going to develop a third Wonder Woman with me," the Heart of Stone star told USA Today. "They said, 'You're in the best hands, you've got nothing to worry about.' Time will tell."
The actress was all set to reprise the role of Diana for a third film with WW84 director Patty Jenkins back at the helm, but we had been led to believe that the movie was shelved when James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as co-heads of the recently implemented DC Studios.
Though a trade report would later clarify that Wonder Woman 3 was not currently in the works, Gunn has yet to weigh in on Gadot's comments. Since the new DCU is (or was supposedly) being developed as a full reboot, it was generally assumed that Gadot, along with Henry Cavill and the rest of the original "SnyderVerse" cast, would be replaced as their respective characters going forward.
However, it's looking increasingly likely that Gunn intends to pick and choose which actors/characters he wants to keep on board, and a new rumor is now claiming that, despite reports to the contrary, Gadot will be back as Wonder Woman in the DCU at some point.
There are no current plans (as far as we know, at least) for Wonder Woman in the first chapter of the DCU slate, "Gods and Monsters," but a Max TV series titled Paradise Lost is in development that will focus on “a Game of Thrones-type story about Themyscira.”
We had assumed this show would lay the groundwork for a new take on the character to be introduced down the line, but it seems Gadot might be staying put after all.
What do you make of this update? Would you be happy if Gadot remained on board as Wonder Woman in the DCU, or were you looking forward to a new actress taking on the role?
