Wonder Woman's Origin - Is It Important?

Wonder Woman's Origin - Is It Important?

Nobody knows what to do with Wonder Woman. Origins like Greek Gods and Amazons (not to mention Atlanteans) are going to be completely out of place in the Nolan/Goyer-verse - which like it or not extends to Superman and now the entire DC roster. What if we catch up with Diana mid-stream? Instead of seeing how she got her powers, we can see how she gets her powers BACK. That's right, it's time to look at the I Ching era of WW.

Derided by some as a betrayal of her central character, the mod fashion designer Diana Prince Era of a depowered Wonder Woman might just be the perfect place to start her cinematic tale.

The basic story is this: The Amazons were loosing their powers and needed to relocate to another dimension to restore them. Rather than go with them, Diana decided to stay in "the world of men" without her powers.

So, she started a new life as somewhat normal person, opening up a mod fashion shop and training under the tutelage of I Ching to fight crime without her superpowers.

Make some updates and start her story here.

First I would fight the temptation to make her some super-rich fashion mogul. I like the idea of the most powerful woman in the world owning a modest shop where she can train and fight crime with anonymity.

Secondly, update I Ching (his name especially) to not only be mentor, but also a confidant and father figure the Amazons lack. She is content in her life of semi-retirement.

That is until Hippolyta shows up at her shop, informing her of the Amzons return, offering her daughter her powers back, and a return to her home. And a little pissed and hurt that Diana basically adopted a father.

Of course, she has to take up the mantle of Wonder Woman again, but I think she would initially refuse until something forces her hand (hint, father-like mentors being killed are a good place to start).

Her true origins can be related by flashback as she is confiding in her mentor.

One good reason to keep her at a fashion shop. You can update her costume more often than Captain America and there's an in-story explanation for it.

So, the most unpopular period of Wonder Woman's run could be a perfect place to start her in the cinematic universe.

Now, wait till you see what I have in store for Mr. Fixit Hulk!

this isnt superman, we want an origin story, if not we end up with a movie where we have a character no one cares about like daredevil

Wonder Woman got her powers by being born, didn't she?

Trying to base the mythological character in a mundane terrestrial setting, showing how said, once-powerful character, must struggle to get its power back, so it can mix well with the previous, more "grounded" chracters in the shared universe? Cool. It worked once...

Well, that's just it. Wonder Woman's origins have changed dramatically. Is she born from clay? A demigoddess daughter of Zeus? A normal Amazon sent as an emissary to the world of men?

Of all the well known superheros - Wonder Woman is the least defined. Her costume changing spin is probably the most recognizable power to the majority of the audience - especially little girls in the 70s twirling until they were dizzy.

Besides her origins are less important because she basically spends thousands of years between origin (birth) and entering the world of men.

Completely unfamiliar with those stories but having Diana as a fashion expert seems so cliche... Can't say I like the idea of the Amazons coming back after Superman's introduction either :P

Also technically the new Goyerverse starts with Superman lol they've made it so clear that Nolan's Batman ain't in it!

I'm gonna post my own article at the end of the week but I think the New 52's Wonder Woman world although it is full of weird creatures and Gods, it does have a very similarly dark tone to it that could work well on screen if you ask me. I think the Gods could work if they are approached as another alien race of sorts.

Finally I'm also a fan of the Ame-Comi comic run. WW is depicted as a young warrior eager to prove herself in battle, but when she goes against her mothers words it results in a punishment of sorts. Diana is made into an ambassador of peace to the world outside of Themyscira, which she is reluctant to perform.

Yes it is, the only person who doesnt need an origin story is Batman. Flash, Wonderwoman Aquaman etc need origin stories arguabley Martian Manhunter does not, you can explain his story within a film like JL even mend it to be in sync with the JL villain, for instance white martians or even Darkseid/Brainiac killing all the inhabitants of his planet. The tricky one is Green Lantern I am on the fence about that.

But Wonderwomans origins need to be explored will open up a fantastical/mythological route in the DC Universe we have Alien/Sci-Fi in Man of Steel and arguably a Science view point in a Flash film and a Detective/Mystery in the Batman reboot. But the Gods would be interesting especially Ares if done right, and you need a mythological/magical viewpoint especially if JLA Dark connects with Zatanna and Constantine even Dr Fate.

So Yes it is important

Now that we know that the Kryptonians had bases set up all over the universe and at least one that had been on earth for thousands of years, it is not a stretch to say that Kryptonians and Olympians could be one and the same in the DCCU.
Besides, if you research the subject enough, you'll find that the island that may have lead to the Atlantis myth may have also been the last time the Amazons were seen. Poseidan was there god, they used to leap over bulls for sport and they were a matriarchy.
Also, there have been connectios between the Kingdoms of Atlantis and Themyscira in DC Comics, recently, during the Flashpoint event.
It would be really cool to have these three races connected, in this way, for the DCCU. It makes sense, y'know?

Not having a Wonder Woman origin is one of the most ridiculous things that Warner Brothers can do. It would basically paint them as sexist given that they can come up with origin stories for their main male characters but not Wonder Woman. Coming up with a story is not that hard. It needs to be updated but it can be done in a way respectful of her history...like this!

A WONDER WOMAN STORY THAT WOULD WORK IN A REAL WORLD SETTING

The way I would do it is to have Hippolyta be a scientist and traveler from a distant world. In fact I would make it so that not only did she know Jor-El but she is the one who invented the technology to bend space and time that he uses to send Superman to earth in Man of Steel. Hippolyta would create a portal that her alien race would use to come to earth and they would all be worshiped as God's (the ones from Greek mythology). Hippolyta would object to her portal being used to interfere with the development of earth and she would destroy the portal and choose to live among humans (this would explain the disappearance of the God's and why people stopped worshipping them). She live among humans (in the third century) would fall in love with a human and have Diana. One day while Hippolyta would be briefly away, Thracian barbarians (who in the real world were worshippers of the god Aries) would come and destroy the village that she lived in. They would kill all the men including her husband intending to enslave the women and girls. Hippolyta would return while they were still under attack and using her "other" worldly powers would save the female members of the community. Recognizing that she would be constantly in danger because women were seen as almost property in every society during that time, she would lead the women and girls to a remote island and using "clay" from her home world she would mix it with the island soil and grow food native to her home planet. The resulting food the women ate would cause them to become stronger and faster than normal people and Diana, because of her half alien DNA would be the strongest and fastest of them all as well as developing other unique abilities such as flight etc...

ALSO...the Amazons would keep a small group of men on an islet (small island) just off the coast of their island. They would "find" these men when they were near death at some point in their life (on a battle field or ill for example) and offer them a chance at life if they agreed to serve the Amazons for procreation or other reasons. If the men agreed they would have almost eternal life and health (by eating certain alien foods)but they could not leave the islet where they lived or they would be killed.

THERE YOU HAVE IT!

A story that addresses Wonder Woman's "deity" roots; alludes (in a symbolic way) to Aries and of her (powers) being from clay; how and why the Amazons separated themselves from men and how they interact with men in a ethical way (the men make the CHOICE to serve the Amazons); and it also explains why Diana would be super powered and different even from the other Amazons.

I wamt to see a Wonder Woman movie, where she has to fight Ares, but Ares would be gigantic, god sized, it would be her versus a god, and then you throw in a subpolot about how the war Ares is bringing is from the Atlanteans, and none of them realize they are being manipulated by ares until after Diana and Arthur have fought

If they want to put steve trevor in it, have him sent to themyscira, not her meeting him in the real world

I actually agree with him here guys. The "Thor" treatment wouldn't work with Wonder Woman. Besides, there is supposed to be a tv series based on her origins, and that could be continuity.

"Well, what about Shepard? Earthborn, but no record of her family."
-"Doesn't have one. She was raised on the streets, learned to look after herself."
--"She got her entire unit killed on Torfan."
"She gets the job done, whatever the cost."
-"Is that the kind of person we want protecting the galaxy?"
"That's the only kind of person who CAN protect the galaxy."
-"I'll make the call..."

You select your origin story... multiple choice, you're either an orphan who was raised by street gangs on Earth, a spacer who followed in your parents' footsteps and joined the military, or you're the sole survivor of a colony that was wiped out by Batarian slavers.

In the span of thirty seconds, your origin story is told by three different voices. Lance Henrikson (Bishop), Keith David (Arbiter), and some guy we don't care about. Only ONE side mission calls back your past - the rest is set in the present.

So...

It's not NEEDED, but I'd say there's definitely an explanation needed as to where the hell she comes from.

@ HouseOfExtremeSexiness

I have a feeling Hawkman will not make it to the big screen despite the reference to his planet in the book tie in.

If they are going to make a Wonder Woman film then it is the perfect opportunity to give her a definitive origin. Right now the idea of "gods" will take the tone of the Man of Steel from serious and mature, to implausible and outlandish. This weird attachment to the Greek Gods is the very reason why Wonder Woman is not taken seriously. They need a story that incorporates the idea of Gods in the story but basically places her in a more science fiction/alien world. I think Stargate (original 1994 movie) is a model for how it should go. In it the "god" Ra is an alien.

I don't know if Hawkman will ever get a film though which is sad as its an interesting character hell be one of those more secondary characters in my opinion, even though I would love for him to have his own film . Defiantly want a joke about the flash gordan hawkmen
In there somewhere would love that

@KryptonianAbominationClone

Please hate my ideas, I'm not making them safe.

My major fear, and the one I KNOW is the way they are going to go with this... Wonder Woman is Kyrptonian, was on that scout ship, and is probably going to be Kara Zor-El...

THAT is the origin I want to avoid.

AverageDrafter
AverageDrafter - 6/19/2013, 2:26 PM
@KAC

All I know is Kara was on that ship thousands of years ago, survived, and no one is clamoring for a Supergirl movie - or even cameo.

I also know that most of Wonder Woman's powers could be explained by her being Kryptonian, a grounded approach to the character and Goyer, Nolan, and WB love to... well I just wouldn't put it past them.

I will agree that WW's origins need to be locked down in film - once its one celluloid its the one the public will know for the next 20 years at least. As far at 99% of the public is concerned, Linda Carter's WW is the definitive version.

I just don't trust anyone at WB to do it right... at all. That's why I'd rather skip ahead to modern times and allude to her origins rather than set them in stone in a horrible way.

So you think Superman is realistic? I´ve already figured out away for Diana to fit in this world easily, with Olympians, Lasso, invisible jet and all, and I´m not even a Hollywood writer and I´m doing a better job.

Just a load of crap really.
