X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX Director Simon Kinberg Says The Film Will Have A Stan Lee Tribute Instead Of A Cameo

“We don’t have a cameo. I’d rather say that than keep it mysterious, out of respect for Stan," said Dark Phoenix helmer Simon Kinberg on the possibility of Stan Lee appearing in the final Fox installment.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix will close out the 20th Century Fox era of the main X-Men franchise, which began nearly two decades ago with 2000's Bryan Singer-directed pic (though the New Mutants spinoff is apparently still on Disney's 2019 film slate).

Director Simon Kinberg was recently asked whether Stan Lee would be appearing in the film, and openly admitted that a cameo wasn't in the cards.  "We don’t have a cameo. I’d rather say that than then keep it mysterious, out of respect for Stan."

However, Kinberg stated that Dark Phoenix will have a tribute to the Marvel icon.  "We do have some tribute to him, and it’s something that obviously we weren’t thinking about when we were making the movie because he was still very much alive. And he’s been such a huge part of making these films over the years. He’s had cameos; he’s had input into the process of making them."

Though the movie's marketing appears to be retreading many of the same missteps as X-Men: The Last Stand, CinemaCon attendees who were treated to a sneak peek of the film gave favorable reactions.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix hits theaters on June 7, 2019.

In DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain.

With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite -- not only to save Jean's soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.

I first saw Stan Lee in the X-Men movies IIRC so I do heavily associate them with him no matter how I feel about the movies.

His passing is still weirdly surreal. Like it didn't exactly happen. Maybe because I haven't watched a new Marvel comics movie with him in it since the news or I haven't seen his very last cameo yet.

Still one of his best

@DnA - Like it didn't exactly happen

That's because it didn't. He's immortal, and to keep people from figuring out that immortals exist he has to go into hiding.

The Russo's say the Steve and Tony scene in the last trailer is not in the movie. You can tell they didn't want that moment to be shown, otherwise Joe would have no reason to detract it.

I'm sure it is in the movie, though out of context and digitally manipulated. So technically, he's not lying.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - I love Anthony's priceless response to his brother confirming that scene was fake.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - Well I expect it to be digitally altered. The new suit is just cgi'd over Cap's Avengers suit

Looking forward to see how this franchise is going to end that started 19 years ago. And, also how Marvel is going to itroduce them.

I wonder how it'll contrast with the one that was in Captain Marvel.

I think it would've been weird to see Stan do a cameo in Dark Phoenix. The X-Men are ofcourse many of his many creations, but it would've been more fitting to have him have his last cameo in Avengers or Spider-Man (although he doesn't have one in the latter)

The best way they can pay tribute to Stan is killing the godawful franchise that is the Fox-Men. Which, fortunately, they're doing!

So they're making a steaming pile of crap but since Stan Lee couldn't be there they'll find another way to tarnish his legacy with it.... Okay, got it!
