When Disney purchased 20th Century Fox, Marvel Studios regained the rights to the X-Men and Fantastic Four. The plan is to reboot the franchises for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but had the merger happened sooner, Kevin Feige keeping Hugh Jackman as Wolverine seems likely.
J.K. Simmons has reprised the role of J. Jonah Jameson in the MCU after his surprise appearance at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home, so Jackman doing the same wouldn't have been too shocking!
In an interview with The Daily Beast, Jackman actually acknowledged that he would have been open to reprising the role of Wolverine in the MCU had Disney acquired Fox a few years earlier. "Totally," he told the site when they quizzed him about whether he would have considered jumping ship.
"Honestly, Marlow, if seven years ago that had happened I’d be like, 'Oh yeah!' but I knew it was the right time for me to leave the party—not just for me, but for the character."
Jackman expressed enthusiasm for some sort of MCU appearance for years, but it was never going to happen when Bryan Singer and Simon Kinberg were in charge of the franchise. The hunky Aussie actor said goodbye to Wolverine in 2017's Logan, hence why he now doesn't want to reprise the role.
That means Kevin Feige will have to find someone else to wield the mutant's claws, and that's a casting decision which isn't going to be easy, even for the amazing Sarah Finn.
