THE NEW MUTANTS Is Indeed Still Coming To Theaters On August 28...Even If Most Of Them Are Closed

Disney has sent out an email to exhibitors, confirming that The New Mutants will indeed be released in theaters on August 28th, even revealing when tickets for the movie go on sale. Read on for details...

Variety reports that despite everything happening with the COVID-19 pandemic right now, The New Mutants remains on track for its planned August 28th release. As the trade notes, it was widely expected that the movie would be delayed yet again, but Disney sent exhibitors a lengthy email on Monday outlining their big screen plans for the Marvel Comics adaptation.

The studio, meanwhile, has also confirmed that tickets can be sold as of August 18th. As one exhibitor tells them, "It's for sure opening August 28th!"

It is, of course, still possible that Disney will change these plans, and with only 1309 of the U.S.'s 6021 theaters actually open, things don't bode well for The New Mutants at the box office. However, if it's true that the movie has to be released in multiplexes due to contractual agreements made by 20th Century Fox, it could play for one weekend before being moved to Disney+.

It's hard to say for sure, but theater owners were banking on big releases like Mulan and Tenet to bring back paying customers, not The New Mutants (which was predicted to flop even before the pandemic).

Now, the movie is the first major blockbuster to open in theaters before they were forced to close, something we could have never guessed would be the case earlier this year. Plans for The New Mutants should start becoming clear over the next couple of weeks, so we'll keep you guys updated.

Are you planning to see The New Mutants in theaters?

@Feralwookiee - Wonder if they have to keep it in theaters for a specific amount of time, or if they could take it out after a week and put it on disney+

@dracula - I think it usually has to run one week contractually, but who knows now?

Good or Bad, this is going to bomb.
The MCU is for sure going to do X men films
for shows, they should do a New Mutants series, maybe introduce Deadpool there, considering Deadpool made his first appearence in New Mutants

@Reeds2Much -
The funniest part is that, even if they force the theatres to reopen, they will just have to close back down again as soon as COVID-19 cases spike. This has happened every single time places have tried to reopen too early, including schools in Florida recently.

Had everything except essential businesses stayed closed and people wore a mask from the beginning, the United States would already be able to start slowly reopening safely (just like other countries and much of Europe).

Makes a certain bizarre kind of sense. If it is true that they can't put it immediately on Disney+ due to prior licensing agreements and if this an albatross hanging around the neck of Fox/Disney that they are desperate to get rid of, just releasing it in theaters, regardless of how many are open, just to get it out there and that part of the contract fulfilled.

Aside from putting it on Disney+ after its HBO deal expires, they'd never have to worry about New Mutants again, as opposed to giving it yet more marketing money to change the release date and ramp up marketing yet again at a later date in a seemingly unending time loop by this point.

I actually have issue 3, 47-52 and 55 of the old claremont run. Also some X Factor and Uncanny X Men from that time. Got them for pretty cheap in a big box of comics

The theaters in my country still don't have any plans to re-open nor have they laid out what kind of strategies to keep the virus without more outbreaks, so I won't be seeing it this month.

@NinnesMBC - here in Albania the rumor is for december 10 to open the theaters. That is unless the virus takes a turn for the worst here.
