X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX - Everything We Learned In The LEAKED First Teaser Trailer

Yesterday, the first trailer for X-Men: Dark Phoenix leaked online but it was gone again in the blink of an eye. Now, we're breaking down everything new it revealed about what to expect in the movie...

X-Men: Dark Phoenix was supposed to be released this month but negative test screenings reportedly resulted in reshoots being ordered and the busy schedules of all those involved has meant that the movie now won't reach the big screen until next February. While the first trailer is set to be with us any week now, a low-res Russian version popped up online yesterday before being removed by Fox.

While it was tricky to garner too much information from it, we've watched it again and again in order to bring you a breakdown of everything
it's revealed, including plot points which haven't been known up until now. For a teaser, it showed off a surprising amount, including a funeral and some very surprising character interactions. So, to take a look, simply click on the "View List" button below for details.

"I'm Scared"

The trailer kicks off with what appears to be a conversation between Jean Grey and Magneto in which she can be seen telling the Master of Magnetism that she's scared. That's undoubtedly a reference to the way her abilities are developing and a throwback to a similar conversation these two had in X-Men: The Last Stand. That, however, ended with the villain recruiting her to his Brotherhood of Mutants.

Jean Grey's Childhood

It seems that just like the older version of Jean in X-Men: The Last Stand (aren't you just loving all these throwbacks to that terrible movie?), this one will also have lost her parents at a young age in a car accident which awakens her mutant abilities. The question is, will this moment just be a memory that Charles Xavier has planted in her head or is she instead remembering things he willed her to forget?

Arriving At The X-Mansion

Another pivotal moment in Jean's life, it appears as if we'll learn more about her arrival at the X-Mansion and presumably a lot more about her relationship with Professor X at the same time. When we met her for the first time in X-Men: Apocalypse, she had clearly been there for a while so this scene will likely place before the events of that movie and sometime after X-Men: Days of Future Past

The Pheonix Awakens

It seems as if the X-Men are well aware of Jean's growing power levels as both Charles and Mystique appear to be somewhat concerned about what's happening to her, another plot point which has been touched on in the past (well, minus the latter, of course, as she used to be a villain). During the course of these tests, we'll no doubt start to see Jean struggle to come to terms with what's happening.

Agent Smith

While it's previously been reported that Jessica Chastain's character could end up being a shape-shifting Skrull, all we see here is a pretty normal looking government agent who seems intent on stopping Jean. In fact, it looks like she ends up going on the run at some point because police cars are flipped in the air and the authorities seem intent on stopping her despite mutants being accepted now.

Run Scott, Run!

We see a few random glimpses of different characters at this point in the trailer, including Storm and Cyclops. The latter will reportedly have a larger role in proceedings this time around but we get a rehash of another X-Men: The Last Stand scene here as Jean removes Scott's visor, presumably using her newfound Phoenix abilities to hold back his optic blasts. Now, just don't kill him, Jean. Please!

Professor X Is Scared

It appears as if Charles has some sort of devastating glimpse into the future as he learns just how destructive the powerful Phoenix Force has the potential to be. We still don't really know what direction this movie will be taking us in but the driving force could be the X-Men attempting to remove that from Jean before it's too late. Perhaps the Skrulls believe they can harness it for their own means?

Genosha

At one point in the trailer, we see a helicopter flying toward an island which is covered in trees. This is presumably Genosha as it's been widely reported that Magneto has decided to set up camp there with his fellow mutants. However, this version really doesn't have much in common with the comic books and it just looks like your typical island so we can probably forget seeing any mutant architecture!

Outer Space

There are lots of random shots which follow that, with most of them too hard to make out or just not that important. However, we do get to see the Blackbird flying above the atmosphere in what has to be a scene taken from the rescue mission in outer space which kicks off the events of this movie. While attempting to save a group of astronauts, the power of the Phoenix will reportedly be unleashed.

Magneto

Based on what happened in both X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse, Magneto will be living peacefully in this movie before once again donning that familiar helmet. In this trailer, we see the former villain doing just that but is he going to be on the side of the X-Men or working against them? It could go either way as there is a shot shortly before this of Charles Xavier meeting with his old friend.

Funeral For A Friend

The X-Men are clearly going to suffer some sort of loss in this movie as we see them standing around a grave at one point in this trailer with Beast looking particularly sad. Now, rumours have swirled that Mystique will meet her maker fairly early on as Jennifer Lawrence wants out of this franchise and seeing as the two of them seemingly embrace later on this teaser, Beast mourning her makes sense.

Costumes

The X-Men donned some pretty hideous looking costumes at the end of X-Men: Apocalypse but those have been redesigned here and are a clear throwback to the yellow and blue outfits we saw in X-Men: First Class. While it's a shame to see the heroes all basically wearing the same thing, there is precedent for that in the comic books and at least they finally have something like comic book outfits on screen.

Luna

Kota Eberhardt has been cast as a character called "Luna" in X-Men: Dark Phoenix but it's been widely reported that that's just a codename so we don't actually know who from the comic books she's suiting up as. Here, she can be seen alongside Magneto and a number of other mutants, including Magneto, so chances are she's either one of his Acolytes or part of the Brotherhood of (maybe) Evil Mutants.

Action Shots

As the trailer comes to a close, there are a number of action shots but nothing worth writing home about. That's not a dig at the movie as they are just pretty generic shots of the heroes in action, none of which really tell us much about what to expect. However, with extensive reshoots currently taking place, Fox was probably limited with just how much they could show from this X-Men adventure.

Dark Phoenix

The final shot is Jean Grey presumably going Dark Phoenix as power radiates throughout her body and her skin starts to crack with the toll that's seemingly taking. This would be one hell of a reveal if it wasn't for the fact that Fox already showed Jean going "Dark" on the cover of EW last December when our first look at the movie was finally revealed (it was supposed to be released this year, remember).

"This Is The End"

The trailer is accompanied by the song "This is the End" and that's appropriate on a number of levels. For starters, this really is the end of the X-Men franchise as Kevin Feige will be rebooting the characters for the Marvel Cinematic Universe shortly after it's released. Perhaps Fox is embracing that and the ending has been changed in order to bid farewell to this take on the characters in style. We'll see...

These Fox-Men films suck major balls. I really hope Marvel gets the rights back soon. :(

@DevarikaWoulf - For me, Logan, the Deadpool flicks, X Men Days of future past, X Men 2, X Men First Class, X Men have genuinely been better films than anything the MCU has produced so far, it will be interesting to see how Disney include the characters, and how they convincingly have people turn to dust instead of bleed when Wolverine stabs them, actually I doubt we'll see Wolverine stab anyone, can't have a Disneyland character going around stabbing people.

Whaley87 - 9/26/2018, 2:12 AM
@ARMUS - Have you closed your eyes whenever there's been blood in the MCU films? What about in X2 where Wolverine is doing his thing around the X Mansion, slicing up guards and there isn't one speck of blood that gets sprayed. Did that have any effect on you? Or did that not fit your narrative?
ARMUS
ARMUS - 9/26/2018, 2:42 AM
@Whaley87 - Didn't see you mention Logan, or does that not fit into your narrative, look just different opinions, I believe and have heard films like Logan and Deadpool don't sell plushies at Disneyland and Disneys biggest market is kids, it's why they make billions and billions, : Mom I want to go again, that's their end goal.

@DevarikaWoulf - You do have to remember that Singer/Raimi basically shaped the modern superhero genre as it is today with their first two films. They broke new ground. Feige even worked on those films and is what helped him move up in the world.

But I do think X-Men has been inconsistent, for every First Class you get an Origins. They're 50/50. MCU have basically got the fun superhero blockbuster formula down to a tee and have made a name for themselves as a reliable studio to have a fun time.

So it'll probably be better in the hands of the MCU, I don't think we'll get a Logan out of them but we'll always get something pretty good.

They should probably steer clear of Wolverine for a few films though, Jackman's version is just so iconic that it would be mistake to have someone jump in so soon.

@ARMUS - The problem is you try to play it like these are just differing opinions, but you are obviously biased and making comments that show you are basing your opinions on inaccuracies or just silliness.

1. There has been blood in the MCU.

2. Disney doesn't make these films. Marvel does. Marvel has already said they are open to making Rated R films when it makes sense. No characters the've done so far have warranted an R rating.

3. If you think for a second that Marvel will not bring Deadpool over and make it Rated R then you are not being very open minded. Deadpool is a money-pit. There is no way they would change that formula.

4. They don't have Marvel characters walking around Disney parks.

5. Your turning to dust comment is perhaps the most ridiculous thing you've said out of all of this. Thanos was wiping them from existence. Would you have preferred them to explode in a gory mess?

Look, at the end of the day I have not liked most of the Fox-Men films. There are so many fundamental problems with their continuity that it is completely frustrating. Like they can't even be bothered to make sure their films all link up. First Class was the beginning of all of that. But there are still some Fox-Men films I have genuinely enjoyed. Let's not forget that MOST of the Fox-films have been bloodless films as well. Except Deadpool and Logan.

But to each their own. Like you said, it's all opinions, but I would think that most people would like to have their opinions on facts and common sense, not clearly biased opinions and inaccuracies.

@ARMUS - Deadpool (And we're VERY lucky with that Thanks to the original team on the first movie) & Logan are the only good X films to come from Fox. Winter Soldier is way better than everything else you just mentioned in your list.

GarthRanzz - 9/26/2018, 5:04 AM
@Whaley87 - What about when Killraven shoots someone in the head in Black Panther and there is zero blood. Is every Fox movie great? No. But to pretend the makers of Iron Man 2, 3 and Thor 2,3 are perfect is funny. You can throw in gotg2 and homecoming which I label it was alright.
mastakilla39
mastakilla39 - 9/26/2018, 5:47 AM
@FilmStudent - mcu has terrible or forgettable films too. only difference is Disney releases more films than fox, but they are equally inconsistent in making good to bad films.

iron man 2, incredible hulk, thor 2, iron man 3, antman, antman & wasp, age of ultron, gotg 2, homecoming, cap the 1st avenger, etc. were pretty much on par with the average x-men film (to me) where they weren't terrible but passable.

I dont think xmen apocalypse was terrible, its somewhat underrated. I think the biggest reason why fans hated it is the "x-men" weren't the main characters but xavier, magneto, and mystique again. Apocalypse was on par with every wasted MCU villain like ronan the accuser, malekith, mandarin, etc. who were severely nerfed but I do understand that Apocalypse is a more well known character so the disappointment was bigger.
mastakilla39
mastakilla39 - 9/26/2018, 6:20 AM
@CorndogBurglar - From bob iger's interview, deadpool is in jeopardy but xmen is going over to Marvel. Iger stated he doesn't see 2 brands under Marvel studio but it all depends on Feige. With DCEU piloting a "seperate brand" for elseworld films like Joker, I think Marvel studio will copy them if Joker is critically well received and profitable. It's all a waiting game. hopefully MCU creates another brand and gives fox the r-rated characters like blade, ghost rider, moon knight, etc. and exits them from the pg-13 universe.

I like ARMUS think the great x-men films are better than most MCU movies but as you stated its subjective. I think some inconsistencies are passable, compared to Marvel not acknowledging anything that didn't work in their previous films or leaving too many open-ended setups. Spider-Man homecoming has so many open-ended setups compared to any MCU origin film its mind boggling.
mastakilla39
mastakilla39 - 9/26/2018, 6:34 AM
@TMW1987ProudProWrestlingFan - are you kidding me? Days of future past is better than most MCU films including TWS. Logan, Deadpool 1&2, X-men 1&2 are classics. TWS is overrated and barely a Captain America film. So much of Evan's screen time was split between Sam Jackson and Scarlett Jo because they were the bigger stars. I love TWS but its an incomplete film because the ending is so open-ended: Bucky just runs away, Hydra still kinda exist?, and Age of Ultron nor Civil War barely acknowledges any of its events.

TWS was a good filler that went nowhere because the Russo's decided to make an Avengers film with Civil War so Cap's personal arcs and "solo trilogy" were wasted. Evans also announced his retirement after Avengers 4 so all his comic book story arcs with Agent 13, Falcon, and Hydra are officially wasted.

No. You clearly don't understand film making.

Solid story, excellent score & cinematography, just an all round solid film better than any of the Fox-Men.

mastakilla39 - 9/26/2018, 8:23 AM
@TMW1987ProudProWrestlingFan - No you clearly don't understand film making.

DOFP is a "complete movie" as I argued you don't need to see the next film and can stop at any time. Every X-men film has a complete story that wraps up by the end of the film unlike TWS or Spider-man Homecoming. MCU movies are made using a TV Show forumla and are mostly considered just expensive episodes of an ongoing tv show. The best Fox-men films are better than the best marvel films even on a technical level. infinity war is not a complete film either.

MCU scores are terrible, only noticeable theme song is the avengers theme because they play it in every trailer for the past 10 years:
https://vimeo.com/181873015

cinematography? are you bullshitting me, marvel has the worst color degradation of all CBM movie makers. they shoot in digital and color their films afterwards and even after coloring it they mute the colors. They are widely known by filmmakers for using the worst color palettes and degradation techniques that are cheap and fast:

@mastakilla39 - Apparently you didn't see Iger's first interview when he clearly stated he doesn't see an issue with keeping Deadpool rated R as long as it is properly labeled as such.

https://birthmoviesdeath.com/2017/12/14/disney-ceo-bob-iger-says-deadpool-will-remain-r-rated

In his recent interview he was referring to the fact that all Marvel films should be under one roof not that they can't make R rated content.
mastakilla39
mastakilla39 - 9/26/2018, 8:59 AM
@LongMayHeReign - Iger says its all up to Feige. Therefore Deadpool is in jeopardy because Feige can do whatever he wants to those chars including making them pg-13. He says "Kevin’s got a lot of ideas. I’m not suggesting [Deadpool joining MCU] that’s one of them. But who knows?”

Iger most of the time supports his employees decision like when firing james gunn and sometimes directly influences business decisions like Solo A Stars Story's release date.

This is why Reynolds said DP3 may not happen and that Xforce may be his last film because its the last project Fox was actively developing pre-merger
Whaley87
Whaley87 - 9/26/2018, 10:08 AM
@GarthRanzz - No one said the makers of said films were perfect. Mind you, you mentioned Thor 3 and I do happen to think Taika is a bit of a filmmaking genius.
LongMayHeReign
LongMayHeReign - 9/26/2018, 10:21 AM
@mastakilla39 - If you believe Iger when he said it's all up to Kevin then why would you not believe him when he says they can still make a rated R Deadpool as long as it's properly labeled?
mastakilla39
mastakilla39 - 9/26/2018, 11:21 AM
@LongMayHeReign - The problem isn't Iger, it's Kevin Feige because he runs Marvel Studios. Feige has been quiet and given no response to a r-rated brand, deadpool, or X-men yet. Feige decides how to run Marvel and Iger just supports what Feige wants. What happens if Feige decides to keep Marvel Studios "family friendly"?

Business insiders are still speculating that Feige will leave Disney next year, so people are too quick to assume F4, Xmen, and DP are in good hands is all I am saying.

@mastakilla39 -

Because Fox never were & never would be able to use that formula, would just be another BIG FAIL on their list if they tried. Hence trying to use DOFP as a scapegoat to reboot / restructure their already convoluted timelines & it still epically failed!

It's OK, you just enjoy the existing Fox-Men & re-watch them over & over whilst the rest of us wait for the X-Men to finally be unleashed on the big screen in a better portrayal.
GarthRanzz
GarthRanzz - 9/26/2018, 3:24 PM
@TMW1987ProudProWrestlingFan - is better portrayal meaning Logan pops in mix tapes that Silver Fox gave him on his death bed? And before you say of course not, it makes as much sense as Star Lord having mix tapes....actually more sense when you think about every space ship having a tape player.

Because that is clearly going to happen. Don't like the MCU, don't watch it. Star Lord HAD A TAPE PLAYER, wasn't playing Cassettes in the ship, DUH! *Face Palm!*
GarthRanzz
GarthRanzz - 9/27/2018, 12:25 PM
@TMW1987ProudProWrestlingFan - No. There is a tape player in the end of the movie. The real Star Lord from the comics doesn't listen to mix tapes is more my point. He is actually quite a bad ass.
