Lauren Shuler Donner Details X-Men: First Class Development; No Plans For Further Spin-Off's!

While discussing the critical success of the movie, X-Men: First Class producer Lauren Shuler Donner reveals that Cyclops and Jean Grey WERE originally considered and says there are currently no plans for further spin-off's...

Talking to Hero Complex while promoting the DVD and blu-ray release of the movie, Lauren Shuler Donner has revealed a little more about the development of X-Men: First Class, seemingly confirming that both Cyclops and Jean Grey were both included when talks of the prequel began. She also comments on its critical success and the chances of any of the newly introduced characters getting their own spin off's in the near future. The answer? Probably not...

On How The Idea For X-Men: First Class Developed:

It sort of happened during “X2.” During a lunch break, I said, ‘You know, wouldn’t it be funny if we could see young X-Men. Like a young Cyclops and a young Jean Grey, as they first visited the mansion. We all thought it was dynamite, but then you get consumed with the movie that you’re doing. Years went by, and Simon Kinsberg went into this executive’s office and said ‘Hey, there’s this comic book — ‘First Class’ — that would make a really good X-men movie.’ Then the executive e-mailed me and said ‘Hey, I figured out how to do young X-men.’ And that’s how it happened.

On Filming Hugh Jackman's Cameo:

That was a fun day! But that’s Hugh. He came at the end of the shoot at a time when everybody was tired and worn out and just making this huge effort to finish the movie — and he just comes in there with his sunny disposition and all of his energy. I mean, I don’t want to sound like a Pollyanna, but he was just a breath of fresh air.

On Whether We'll See Any Of The First Class Characters In Their Own Movie:

Well, you never know. At one point we were going to do the Magneto movie, but it was always Magneto and Charles. They’re two sides of each other, although they were raised very differently. Could any others spinoff? I really don’t know. I think this particular strain, this franchise, is going to work as a team.

On The Critical Success Of The Movie:

It was a couple of factors. First, we grounded it with a real historical event, and didn’t skirt around the fact that this story would’ve taken place in the early sixties. By basing it around the Cuban Missile Crisis, it gave it some credibility and took itself very seriously. Second of all, I think we reinvented the franchise, making it feel a little bit more James Bond and a little bit less comic book. And then lastly, we just cast it well. All of our actors were incredible and gave those characters a reality that I think the critics really appreciated.

I smell a reboot. Comic fans dug X-men 1st class but the general viewing audience just does not appreciate the love Eric and Charles have.

One thing I have to give FOX props for in their X-Men films is they seem to have a pretty solid cast throughout. They just dont tend to use them as well as they could. Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart are great in the first trilogy. James Marsden could've been great if they wrote Cyclops better, same with Jean, Magneto, and Mystique. Liev was the best Sabretooth. Some of the cast did suck though, never liked Anna Paquin as Rogue or Ben Foster as Angel.

But First Class was a complete game changer. I love Ian Mckellen as an actor, but Michael Fassbender played Magneto phenomenally, and was the better Master of Magnetism of the two. James McAvoy played a very different Xavier than Patrick Stewart, but one who was equally as appealing (a young Charles who is slightly reckless and relies more on his intellect vs a wiser Charles who is a keeper of peace and adept at the use of his powers). I actually think I preferred Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique over Rebecca Romijn's, although Romijn's was more of a seductive assassin like the comics.

We dont need any more spin offs of the X-Men. First Class needs a sequel. X3 needs a sequel that redeems it. The only X-Men spin-offs I want to see for a long time are Wolverine (Japan Saga done right) and Deadpool (done right).

@Kwyjibo So true! The Hellfire could've been awesome if done right. I mean where was Selene aka Black Queen & Donald aka White King? Plus January Jones' acting was flat. She was Shaw's puppet and the WHOLE time Kevin Bacon was on screen I kept seeing Mr. Sinister not Sebastian Shaw.

you know i dont understand how 5 x-men films and the only real mutant threat besides a ex team member or mags was shaw.

i dont understand why its so hard for them to make a movie with villains we want to see. Wheres sinister, the sentinals, and apocalypse.
First class wasent terrible but they still got me waiting for a proper reboot

donner is just so remarkably stupid it amazes me, how do u make 2 x-films and have no idea about a first class comic. Give me a break its something she should have known the first day she found out she had anything to do with x-men.

it just goes to show you how she could care less if her movies and comics have anything in common. MARK MY WORDS.... VAUGHN WILL NOT DIRECT THE SEQUAL. There gonna add cyclops in the mix now so the team can have 2 people with pretty much the same power now. Charles, frost and jean all kind of doing the same thing. Whats left for magneto x1 villain, x2 helpful,x3 villain and first class hes a helpful villain again. its getting pretty friggin lame now if u ask me. He cant be the main baddy but he cant be left out so they need a new villain on top of adding scott and jean while shuffling Magneto all while basing it around another historical event!!!! Vaughn wont touch that in a million years. Fox has themselves really stuck in a writers corner even if they decided to leave out jean and scott.

I've been reading X-Men comics my whole and thought it was a great movie but for the life of me I can't figure out why they decided to go with Riptide,Darwin, and Angel Salvadore when they had a wealth of bad-ass characters to draw from, still awesome movie tho.Fassbender and McAvoy kill.

Basing it around the Cuban Missile Crisis WOULD HAVE given it "credibility" if they hadn't screwed up with inaccuracies and completely disregarded continuity.

Oh, and "wolverinefury"? I think she meant no spin-offs from "X-Men: First Class." Don't rule out a "Gambit" movie just yet.

Hopefully as these movies get more expensive to make right that these other studios let Marvel have their properties back because if it is not done right it will not make the money .

Though First Class was entertaining as all Hell, I still firmly believe that FOX has ruined forever the name "X-Men". They need to sell the rights back to Marvel ASAP.

Disney payed $4 BILLION for MARVEL. They have all the money they need to make whatever freakin' movies they want. They could make a "D-Man" movie if they wanted, lose $150,000,000, and say "oh well, what's next?".
