KINGSMAN Star Taron Egerton Once Again Addresses "Really Exciting" Rumors He'll Play MCU's Wolverine

Taron Egerton remains a fan-favourite choice to play Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the actor has once again expressed interest in the role while addressing those persistent rumours...

Kingsman star Taron Egerton has been a fan-favourite choice to take over the role of Wolverine from Hugh Jackman for several years now, and he's always talked positively about the possibility of making it happen. The talented Welshman would be an undeniably great pick for a younger Logan in the MCU, though we still don't know for sure what Marvel Studios has planned for the clawed mutant.

Egerton was recently interviewed on the BBC's The One Show (via Digital Spy) in the UK, and was asked to comment on the speculation he could be the next Wolverine.

"There’s no truth in it at all," the actor stated. "There’s no truth in it. It would be, obviously, really exciting, but I don’t know."

As for whether he's actually interested in the role, Egerton added: "Yeah, of course. That’s like playing Bond. It would be exciting to play a role where you play to by such a huge audience. Those movies are the most watched movies in the world. It’s a great thrill and it’s a great part. But there’s no truth in it. Very flattering, though."

Is he protesting a little too much here? Probably not, but we'd like to think Marvel Studios has taken note of what a popular choice he is for this role. The character has been absent from our screens since 2017's Logan, and with the X-Men now part of the MCU, it only makes sense for an up-and-coming star like Egerton to take the hero and do something new with him.

I don't really get why he's such a fan favourite for Wolverine. He's a good actor but he doesn't look the part at all and none of his other performances have ever given me any indication that he's a good fit for that particular role. Or do people just like him for the part because he's under 6ft?

I could see him as Cyclops though, and that's a character who needs WAY more love and attention this time around. Make him the X-Men's answer to Captain America in The Avengers; a natural leader, charming without being smarmy, and just a thoroughly decent guy who tries to see and bring out the best in the people around him. Although I'm sure I'm going to get a bunch of replies protesting that at 5'9" he's "too short" to play the usually 6'1" Cyclops, as if movies have never, ever made actors look taller than they really are...

...except, you know, Tom Cruise, Tom Hardy, RDJ, Mark Wahlberg, Zac Efron, Robbie Coltrane, Ian McKellen, Humphrey Bogart, Vin Diesel, and even James Marsden in the same role.

@dragon316 - There are a lot of Valkeries. They Valkery in the movies isn't the same Valkery from the comics.

@AC1 - What I don't get is how everyone is so quick to say that they should just pick the person best for the role and appearance shouldn't matter. Like skin color. Yet, pick a tall actor to play Wolverine and suddenly everyone loses their minds.
SpideyQuad
SpideyQuad - 2/27/2022, 9:07 AM
@AC1 - he is correct height
AC1
AC1 - 2/27/2022, 5:45 PM
@SpideyQuad - correct height for who? Egerton is 5'9", comic Wolverine is 5'3" and Cyclops is 6'1"

And again, I don't care about the actors' height - I loved Hugh Jackman as Wolverine even though the comic book and movie versions were very different in a lot of ways including height, and as I said I could see Taron as Cyclops even though he's technically shorter than the character is in the comics (James Marsden is roughly the same height as Taron Egerton) but I just don't see him as Wolverine - he doesn't have that gruff, rough around the edges, threatening vibe and I'd also like to see someone who looks a little older as Logan, maybe in their late 30s or even their 40s, seeing as he's meant to be over 100 years old but his aging slowed once he reached his prime (which is usually around 40)

AC1 - 2/27/2022, 5:52 PM
@CorndogBurglar - yeah I don't get that either, it baffles me that there are people who actively hated Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and most of them blamed it on his height. Like, does him being tall really ruin his performance?

I'm all for a shorter Wolverine this time around, but more than that I want someone who looks threatening, gruff, rough around the edges, rugged, mature and of course someone with the acting chops and gravitas to really make the most of the role. Also ideally I'd like the next Wolverine not to be the main character like Hugh's version was in the Fox franchise, let Cyclops have a chance to shine; and again, Taron seems a much better fit for Scott, seeing as he's youthful, clean cut, seems pretty charming and charismatic, etc.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 2/27/2022, 8:51 PM
@AC1 - Yeah man. I don't get it. Wolverine being short is an appearance thing and doesn't really impact his character at all, aside from the fact that this little guy is a total badass. Is completely a visual thing. Because when you really look at Wolverine, his height isn't what makes his character and it isn't what makes him a badass. Let's face it, he has an unbreakable adamantium skeleton, a very strong healing factor, and six, one foot long razor sharp claws on each hand capable of slicing through anything. If he stabs you, you get stabbed 3 times at once. Not to mention heightened senses, agility, and strength. Anyone with that power set would be a badass.

And I couldn't agree more about him not being the main character. But they need to do it like The Avengers movies. I don't really feel like any one Avenger was the main character in any of those movies. They all had their time time to shine and their own little back stories and character arcs.

Wolverine should be the X-Men's Hulk. He's there. He's awesome. He gets a couple scenes dedicated to him kicking major ass. And everyone loves him. He should just have the added piece of being the anti-authoritarian character on the team. And they shouldn't explore his past in the X-Men movies. He should have a mysterious past than no one knows. His past can be explored in his own, inevitable solo films.

Personally, I would like to see a Wolverine trilogy. First movie is the same story from Wolverine Origin. The comic, not the crappy Fox-Men film. Have it end with him leaving his home and going out into the wilderness and getting picked up by Weapon X.

Second movie should be Weapon X. Just like the old Marvel Comics Presents mini-series. Show him going through the whole bonding process, breaking loose and going on a berserker rage through the facility, and end with him escaping into the Canadian wilderness.

Third movie should be Alpha Flight. James Hudson finds Wolverine in the woods. Brings him in, gives him a family and a team. Wolverine gets close with Heather Hudson and causes a rift in the team. Wolverine goes out on his own, but James wants him back for their team. They fight, Wolverine wins and leaves, only to meet Xavier at the end.

The trilogy would be a good showing of his past and explain how he ended up with the X-Men.

@AC1 - I am the last person you would ask how good an actor is, but I've enjoyed him in the movies I've seen. I figure a good actor could play almost any part and be convincing. Wolverines are small in stature, but tough. The whole thing about Logan is he is a short angry person. For that reason alone I always had a hard time with Hugh Jackman. Everything else he had it nailed down, but I felt strong enough about the height issue that matters to me. Again prickly opinion

I think would perfect as the new Logan. He has the acting chops, isn't that tall. Basically all he needs is claws at facial hair.

Never saw as Wolverine tbh, maybe Iceman or Cyclops or Angel maybe?

Still don't have a number 1 pick for Logan tbh (Maybe Tom Hardy if he wasn't on the older side and already playing Venom).

I still think Jack O'Connell would be great.

Ray Nicholson wouldn't be bad from what little I've seen of him.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson was one of Matthew Vaughn's picks to play Logan and I can see it tbh (although playing Kraven could get in the way of that possibly).

Alden Ehrenreich still seems like the safe choice for Disney imo.

...and Milo Gibson and Scott Eastwood are both people that I just haven't seen enough of imo.

@Superspecialawesomeguy - Milo Gibson has his dad's crazy eyes so he is a great choice i hadn't thought of. Scott Eastwood has his dad's crows feet and kind of looks older than he is. That could be a problem for someone that is supposed to barely age.

Yeah, Wolverine isn't pretty. Of course they will make him pretty because movie goers neeeeeeeeeeeeeeed wank fodder much more than they need good stories, good SFX or good anything really. And because Hollywood diversity doesn't extend to ugly people for the same reason.

If the Hound were just a hweee bit tollerr than Lord Tyrion he’d be a great wolverine. This guy’s got big time 90’s Scott Summers vibes. Just before he puberted into James Marsden.

Colin Ferrel is playing the Penguin yet people think Egerton can't play Wolverine because he's too pretty. You need somebody young and ageless to play Wolverine if you want him around for awhile. Let the hair and makeup team rough him up

OmegaDaGrodd - 2/26/2022, 11:54 AM
@HydraB0b - a lot of people's ideas of casting are centered around how much the performer already looks like the character. Jackman's Wolverine barely looks like Wolverine in the movies outside of his hair, but Hugh Jackman looks nothing like Wolverine in pretty much any other film. A lot of the transformation is in hair and makeup
SheepishOne
SheepishOne - 2/26/2022, 9:35 AM
Not feeling him for Wolverine. Maybe Cyclops (even then, I'm not so sure). Wolverine needs to be a guy you look at and instantly know not to mess with, before the claws even come out.

Egerton is a great actor, but he doesn't have the vibe. Even if he put on Marvel Muscle, I don't see it.

Too young, too pretty. Jackman was great but if we are starting over I'd like to see a comic accurate Wolverine. Short, 40's, definitely not pretty, ferocious. The guy alone at the end of the bar you know to steer clear from.

I've been beating this drum for a few years now. I catch shit every time too, mostly people saying he doesn't have the "acting chops" to portray Logan. I say that's hogwash as not only is he a wonderful actor, Wolverine is not that complex of a character portrayal. He's a grumpy asshole loner with memory issues.

He's a shorter guy and has the build to be able to pull it off. IMO he's perfect.
