Mark Millar On How OLD MAN LOGAN Can Work Without Marvel Studios Characters

From Black Bolt to Hulk and Spider-Bitch, Old Man Logan was crammed full of characters who aren't allowed to appear in Fox's X-Men Universe. So, what does that mean for the 2017 Wolverine movie which is thought to be a loose adaptation of the hit story? Well...

At this year's San Diego Comic-Con, Hugh Jackman seemingly confirmed that 2017's Wolverine movie is going to be an adaptation of Old Man Logan. Of course, there's no way it can ever be a faithful adaptation (unless Fox teams up with Marvel Studios, and that probably isn't going to be happening any time soon) due to the sheer amount of characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe who factor into the story. As it turns out though, that's not something which is worrying comic book writer and Fox creative consultant, Mark Millar. "They're not important to the story," he told IGN in a recent interview. "The way I worked that thing is I actually structured it as, I broke it down mechanically - I figured out going from this part of America to that part of America and what he would encounter along the way, and then I added in the adversities later."

"Basically Wolverine doing The Road movie is the important thing and he has a friend [a blind Hawkeye] with him," Millar continues. "But that friend could be Cyclops and he could be blind by the fact that his ruby-quartz visor is broken and he has to keep his eyes closed the whole time and everything, but still insists on driving the car they're crossing America with. There's lots of stuff. Instead of the Hulk, you could have the Blob or something." The Kick-Ass creator isn't wrong, as many of the characters could indeed be replaced by X-Men characters. It's still a shame though that we won't get to see Wolverine battling the Red Skull or the massive skeleton of the fallen Giant-Man! "Honestly, the continuity stuff is the most boring side of it. I kind of like it, keeping it in the X-Men universe a little, too, because comic fans are different from the mainstream world. I know this stuff backwards because I've lived my whole life loving this stuff, but most people don't know all the minutia and everything so I think keeping it simplified and keeping it generally X-Men universe is a smarter thing to do." What do you guys think?

Of course it is. He can't use other Marvel characters so that's the best thing he can say.

Of course, if he could use them he'd be telling us how the Hulk vs.Wolverine fight will be awesome and just how important continuity is to the film.

@JoshWilding I thought it was a giant skeleton of Loki?

Anyway, I thought this and Millar's Nemesis wasn't all that. I like Millar's arc where Wolverine is under mind control and fights SHIELD, Elektra, and the F4.

I used to be a good Christian. Then I read Millar's The Unfunnies. Now I'm an atheist and I cry every night.

@YoungThanos

Wasn't he also the same dickhead who made this?

Lol, it seems like Fox aren't the only ones who thinks he makes good ideas.

But I guess you won't be seeing that, will you?

@ThePowerCosmic

Yeah because people would be just as excited to see the blob as they would the Hulk. smh.

I would. As a Hulk fan, Hulk in Old Man Logan was a [frick]ing abomination. Dumbest and worst thing I ever read in a comic.

I rather have Frank Miller Superman on the big screen the Old Man Logan's Hulk.

I think this movie will be tough to pull off. Singer is so intelligent that his Xmen flicks get you to suspend disbelief better. My expectation is this will be enjoyable but not amazing. And thats okay.

"They're not important to the story,"

Exactly the kind of thinking that got us the Fantastic Four fiasco. Hey, why not make Wolverine a woman this time? Don't bother to explain it, because you don't do that kind of thing.

You can't switch Hawkeye for Cyclops for the simple fact that Wolverine had murdered the X-Men, after being tricked by Mysterio. This is why he hadn't used his claws in years. What's going to be your explanation there; that he stopped using his claws because they itched?

What he's missing is that their will still need to be characters from the X-men lore. Most of those characters have been butchered by Singer and whoever else. It will be an extremely loose adaption, probably not much like the comic.

Use Wendigo instead of Hulk. Just make him a massive hairy mutant who can infect others and turn them into smaller, less powerful Wendigos under his control. Use Omega Red instead of Red Skull, and a blind older Cyclops instead of Hawkeye. Love that idea. It would be easy to do and keep within the X-franchise in terms of characters. Plus they could dip into the Fantastic Four stable of characters too.

Could Fox make an Old Man Logan movie without Marvel-owned characters? Of course they could. Millar is absolutely right about that.

Could Fox make an Old Man Logan movie set in the continuity wreckage of the Singer/Ratner/Hood/Vaughn/Mangold/Singer/Miller-verse? That's a different question entirely. Maybe... but only if they actually address all of that baggage in an intelligible way. And considering that this movie is either set in the future of an active cinematic universe or an alternate future... it may (once again) just churn that confusing snarl up and make it even less appealing as an ongoing franchise.

I worry that Mangold could turn this film into a cameo laden greatest hits in the same vein as X-Men Origins: Wolverine. (Jesus even that title was bollocks). That formula completely works in the comic book medium, but we've already seen it fail onscreen.

@ThePowerCosmic - "Also isn't cyclops dead in the future or just bring him back with no explanation like several other continuity flubs in the Fox-Men universe."

Nope. All the X-Men who previously died some how were all alive at the end of DoFP:

Much like, Professor X was "killed" by Jean/Phoenix during Last Stand, but some how he was alive and well with no explanation, that I remember, in DoFP.

"Did we ever find out how Wolverine got his adamantium claws back in DOFP since they were bone at the end of the Wolverine film?"

Nope. They don't seem to give a shit about continuity or plot holes, so I guess we the fans/viewers shouldn't give a shit either??? Hopefully, sooner than later they'll realize fans actually care about this stuff, especially when you have a shared universe. Avoiding confusing fans/viewers is not a priority.
If they cared, they wouldn't have cast two different actors as Boliver Trask who look NOTHING alike!

HAHAHAHAHAHA
