What. An. Episode.

Today's fifth instalment of X-Men '97, titled "Remember It," begins by following a documentary crew in the X-Mansion as they get to know the team. There's plenty of drama away from the cameras, though, including a moment which sees Jean Grey kiss Wolverine as she attempts to figure out her muddled past.

Logan tells her to go back to Cyclops who, after making his feelings known about humans to the interviewer, is comforted by Jean...except it isn't Jean. It's Madelyne Pryor; she and Scott have been having a psychic affair for weeks in the wake of their son being taken into the future by Bishop.

Meanwhile, on Genosha, Magento, Rogue, and Gambit explore the mutant paradise ahead of it officially becoming part of the United Nations.

There are heaps of cameos (Nightcrawler!), while we also learn that the island is currently ruled over by a council made up of Sebastian Shaw, Emma Frost, Banshee, Callisto, and Moira MacTaggert. They want Magneto to be their King, but he'll only do so with Rogue by his side.

Which Ties Animated Series To The Wider MCU - SPOILERS

The X-Man confesses to Gambit that she and Magneto were once romantically involved and decides to be with the Master of Magnetism...until they share a dance and she realises it's Remy she wants.

Jean and Madelyne are both hit by some sort of psychic blast and the latter is reunited with Cable. She realises he's her son before the time-traveller is pulled back to the future after issuing a dire warning.

With that, a massive Sentinel attacks Genosha and lays waste to its population. Rogue and Gambit spring into action to save the Morlocks while Magneto attempts to hold the giant robot at bay; countless mutants die and, after using his powers to protect his fellow X-Men, Magneto and the Morlocks are also killed.

Gambit saves Rogue, only to lose his life in the process. He goes out a hero, though, and uses his powers to destroy that massive Sentinel and save the few remaining mutants on Genosha (Banshee, Sebastian Shaw, and more are among the deceased).

A devastated Rogue cradles the dead Gambit in her bare hands and says, "I can't feel you," as the episode ends.

Who was behind the attack? That's not revealed, though comic book fans will know it was Cassandra Nova (Deadpool & Wolverine's rumoured villain). Whether she's about to make her X-Men '97 debut remains to be seen, but it's fair to say none of us saw these developments coming.

Didnt This version of Rogue join the team as a teenager? When did she have time to have a relationship with Magneto.
Vigor

@Taonrey - that's kind of the implication. It was a Diddy and Justin beiber grooming situation 👀

"Who was behind the attack? That's not revealed, though comic book fans will know it was Cassandra Nova"

Oof. @joshwilding can't you discuss the show without potentially spoiling you know, the rest of the show?
You can change that line to "comic book fans may know who was behind the attack which could lead into deadpool 3 in interesting ways". Ya don't have to actually say the name for those who would prefer to be left in the dark. If you know you know. And if you want to know, an eager fan can go Google it. Or maybe make it another article making it clear there's spoilers for the comic and the show
And I'll add that Cable said it was a HE who is appearing. Cassandra is a she. So I guess we'll see...

WhatIfRickJames - 4/10/2024, 11:55 AM
@Vigor - he should keep his mouth shut. She hasn’t even been revealed yet and he’s going to spoil it before an episode is released. Shitty of him to do that Bu I expect nothing less

@Vigor - complete dickhead move. Again and again

@Vigor - Yea, I haven't read comic books in years, and didn't know it was Cassandra 🥺. I would've love to figured it out.

That was an episode! They going off on all cylinders! Suprising to see so many bite it. Hopefully it last. I reckon we're going for a DOFP adaption.

Gambit was the MVP on this one.
Origame

@UniqNo - but...they already did that in this continuity

@Origame - then I take that back, but there's clearly another time travel element going on with Cable's quick appearance. I noticed he actually sounded a bit like Brolin too, obviously it's not him, but sounded similar.

Spidey91 - 4/10/2024, 11:21 AM
It is still kind of funny to me that this cartoon show is the most mature thing Marvel has put out in years. I mean, it is both surprisingly violent and unexpectedly horny at the same time.

@Spidey91 - the blood was definitely not expected, but they been consistent with it since episode 1. Great stuff.

This was the best episode of X-Men '97, the best Marvel Studios content EVER. When Cable popped up to warn everyone and then immediately left, I knew something bad was about to happen. Wow.. I wanted this to be a bad dream, the status Quo has forever changed the X-Men. 5 stars, bring back Beau DeMayo!

For real.
If the next seasons don't hit the home run just because they fired him then we know who was doing the heavylifting.

Im really impressed with this episode. I take back what i said about the animation being bad and the writing being on what if levels.

Marvel should bring back DeMayo for season 2 and all other future projects. If they dont, then too bad.

I'm still reeling from episode 5. The MCU X-Men have some Shaq sized shoes to fill. I don't feel ashamed in saying this is the best X-Men adaptation we've EVER gotten.

This was PEAK FICTION. A true high point for Marvel. Those last few minutes were CINEMA.

Next episode: THIS ONE'S FOR YOU, GUMBO!!!

The episode was fire, although compared to the comics it wasn't worth a f*ck tbf, thankfully i'm not a weirdo and i can appreciate both mediums. :)

Poor animation, lame dialogue, basic writing. The 90's are over. It should be more modern.

Spidey91 - 4/10/2024, 12:21 PM
@NGFB - saying it has poor animation is just objectively wrong.
